Expanding the phosphorus-carbon analogy: formation of an unprecedented 5-phosphasemibullvalene derivative.

We could access for the first time a 5-phosphasemibullvalene derivative via quantitative and selective photochemical di-π-methane rearrangement from the corresponding phosphabarrelene. Due to the striking analogy between phosphorus and carbon, this hitherto unknown transformation of vinyl-phosphorus species provides the possibility to prepare novel, chiral and conformationally rigid organophosphorus cage compounds in a straightforward manner.

Coordination chemistry and functionalization of white phosphorus via transition metal complexes.

The chemistry of phosphorus is nowadays rivaling that of carbon in terms of complexity and diversity. This tutorial review highlights the state-of-the-art in the field of metal-mediated activation and functionalization of white phosphorus. Particular attention is given to an illustration of the coordination abilities of the intact molecule as well as the disaggregating and reaggregating metal-mediated processes resulting in different polyphosphorus ligands from P(1) to P(12). The metal-promoted P-C and P-H bond forming processes are also reviewed showing that an ecoefficient catalytic protocol

Poisoning with organophosphorus insecticides.

Because of an increasing incidence of poisoning with the newer organophosphorus anticholinesterase insecticides, these compounds have been reviewed in terms of their history and pharmacology, relationship with other drugs, factors affecting toxicity, mechanism of action, toxic signs and treatment. The modern organophosphorus pesticide requires metabolic conversion before toxicity develops. Insects have a greater propensity for this conversion than humans. Nevertheless, this conversion does occur in humans and can be potentiated by other drugs. Toxicity also varies with age, sex, route and freq

Organophosphorus poisoning induced delayed neurotoxicity: a report of two cases.

IntroductionOrganophosphorus compounds (OPC) are one of the most commonly used pesticides worldwide and are often misused for suicidal poisoning due to their easy availability. Acute manifestations and management of organophosphorus (OP) poisoning have been reported several times. Organophosphorus-induced delayed neurotoxicity (OPIDN) is a rare delayed presentation of OP poisoning that involves central-peripheral distal axonopathy.Case presentationIn this study, we report two cases of OPIDN developed after a few weeks of OP poisoning. Clinical features, electrodiagnostic study findings, and re

Reductive Rearrangement of Tetraphenyldiphosphine Disulfide To Trigger the Bisthiophosphinylation of Alkenes and Alkynes.

The facile synthesis of organophosphorus compounds is of great importance for the development of new synthetic methods by using air-stable sources of phosphorus. In this respect, a synthetic method that is based on a reductive rearrangement and is capable of converting air-stable pentavalent phosphorus compounds into reactive trivalent phosphorus compounds is a powerful tool. Tetraphenyldiphosphine disulfide, which is a shelf-stable solid, was the focus of this study, and it was shown to undergo reductive rearrangement to trigger the bisthiophosphinylation of a variety of alkenes, such as term

Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Tertiary Phosphine Oxides via Sequential Substitution Reaction of Phosphonic Acid Dithioesters with Grignard Reagents.

A facile synthetic method for unsymmetrical tertiary phosphine oxides is reported. Sequential treatment of phosphonodithioic acid S,S-di(p-tolyl) esters with two Grignard reagents enabled the stepwise introduction of different carbon substituents on the phosphorus atom. The chemical stability of dithioesters and monosubstituted thioesters has enhanced the utility of this method, rendering a wide range of organophosphorus compounds easily available.

Development of a nanocopper-decorated laser-scribed sensor for organophosphorus pesticide monitoring in aqueous samples.

Organophosphorus pesticides are widely used in industrial agriculture and have been associated with water pollution and negative impacts on local ecosystems and communities. There is a need for testing technologies to detect the presence of pesticide residues in water sources, especially in developing countries where access to standard laboratory methods is cost prohibitive. Herein, we outline the development of a facile electrochemical sensor for amperometric determination of organophosphorus pesticides in environmental water samples. A three-electrode system was fabricated via UV laser-inscr

P(═O)H to P-OH Tautomerism: A Theoretical and Experimental Study.

Phosphinylidene compounds R(1)R(2)P(O)H are important functionalities in organophosphorus chemistry and display prototropic tautomerism. Quantifying the tautomerization rate is paramount to understanding these compounds' tautomerization behavior, which may impact their reactivities in various reactions. We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the initial tautomerization rate of a range of phosphinylidene compounds. Initial tautomerization rates are found to decrease in the order H3PO2 > Ph2P(O)H > (PhO)2P(O)H > PhP(O) (OAlk)H > AlkP(O)(OAlk)H ≈ (AlkO)2P(O)H, where "Alk" deno

The enzymatic conversion of phosphonates to phosphate by bacteria.

Phosphonates are ubiquitous organophosphorus compounds that contain a characteristic CP bond which is chemically inert and hydrolytically stable. Bacteria have evolved pathways to metabolize these phosphonate compounds and utilize the products of these pathways as nutrient sources. This review aims to present all of the known bacterial enzymes capable of transforming phosphonates to phosphates. There are three major classes of enzymes known to date performing such transformations: phosphonatases, the C-P lyase complex and an oxidative pathway for CP bond cleavage. A brief description of each c

[3,3]-rearrangements of phosphonium ylides.

Allylic phosphonium ylides are readily generated by the combination of an allylic alcohol, a carbene, and a chlorophosphite. Here we demonstrate that these intermediates undergo a thermal [3,3]-rearrangement to provide single isomers of homoallylic phosphonates in good to excellent yields. This new reaction manifold for phosphorus ylides is tolerant of a range of substitution patterns on the reactants and provides access to structurally complex intermediates for the synthesis of enzyme inhibitors, aminophosphonic acids, and natural products.

Behaviour of semipermeable membrane devices in neutral pesticide uptake from waters.

The application of semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) has been evaluated as a passive sampler for the collection of multiresidue pesticides in continental waters. Seven chlorinated, five organophosphorus, six carbamate, nine pyrethroid and ten other pesticides were tested in order to estimate which compounds can be retained with these devices. The effect of water parameters, such as temperature, pH, ionic strength and organic matter content, were evaluated for their effect on the retention of the pesticides by the SPMDs. Studies of uptake from water were performed in a glass beaker contain

Copper-Catalysed Synthesis of (E)-Allylic Organophosphorus Derivatives: A Low Toxic, Mild, Economical, and Ligand-Free Method.

Organophosphorus compounds are fundamental for the chemical industry due to their broad applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials science. Despite their high importance, the sustainable and cost-effective synthesis of organophoshoryl derivatives remains very challenging. Here, we report the first successful regio- and stereoselective hydrophosphorylation of terminal allenamides using an affordable copper catalyst system. This reaction offers an efficient protocol for the synthesis of (E)-allylic organophosphorus derivatives from various types

A novel copper-catalyzed reductive coupling of N-tosylhydrazones with H-phosphorus oxides.

We report here a novel C(sp(3))-P bonds formation via copper-catalyzed reductive coupling of N-tosylhydrazones with H-phosphorus oxides. A variety of aliphatic and aromatic substrates bearing electron-rich and electron-deficient substituents affords phosphine oxide derivatives with moderate to good yields. This work suggests a new transformation of aldehydes/ketones via N-tosylhydrazones to organophosphorus compounds.

The effect of metrifonate on Brugia pahangi infections in domestic cats.

Metrifonate, an organophosphorus compound, caused a decline in the number of microfilariae in domestic cats experimentally infected with Brugia pahangi. It was found that the drug was active against both microfilariae and macrofilariae, but probably its greatest effect was on the macrofilarial stages. It is suggested that the drug should be used in filarial infections of man on a trial basis.

Nucleoside 3'-Phosphorofluoridates for P(V)-Based Oligonucleotide Synthesis.

Oligonucleotides (ONs) are fundamental to modern life sciences and nucleic acid-based therapeutics. Although P(III)-based phosphoramidite chemistry remains industry standard for ON synthesis, its requirement for phosphorus oxidation every coupling cycle is operationally complex. Inspired by Michelson and Todd, who synthesized the first dinucleotide via a 3'-phosphorochloridate [P(V)-Cl] intermediate, we have developed a strategy for ON synthesis using nucleoside 3'-phosphorofluoridates [P(V)-F] as bench-stable building blocks. In the presence of silicon-based activators, the enhanced reactivit

Molecular Basis of the Substrate Specificity of Phosphotriesterase from Pseudomonas diminuta: A Combined QM/MM MD and Electron Density Study.

The occurrence of organophosphorus compounds, pesticides, and flame-retardants in wastes is an emerging ecological problem. Bacterial phosphotriesterases are capable of hydrolyzing some of them. We utilize modern molecular modeling tools to study the hydrolysis mechanism of organophosphorus compounds with good and poor leaving groups by phosphotriesterase from Pseudomonas diminuta (Pd-PTE). We compute Gibbs energy profiles for enzymes with different cations in the active site: native Zn2+cations and Co2+cations, which increase the steady-state rate constant. Hydrolysis occurs in two elementary

Mixed 1,1-bisphosphorus compounds: synthesis, alkylation, and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination reactions.

Mixed 1,1-bisphosphorus compounds were prepared by the reaction between a phosphonate diester anion and a P(III) chlorophosphine, or its P(V) borane complex. After deprotonation either in situ or in a separate step, the resulting products can be alkylated or reacted with carbonyl compounds. A variety of olefination products were obtained, generally with high E-stereoselectivity. The reaction is competitive with other methods for the synthesis of alkenyl phosphorus compounds, and in the case of trisubstituted alkenes, regio- and stereocontrolled olefination provides products not easily accessib
