Combined use of miniscrews, facemask and clear aligner appliances for the treatment of an 11-year-old girl with unilateral posterior scissor bite and skeletal class III malocclusion: A case report.

This article illustrates the successful treatment of scissor bite correction using facemask, clear aligner appliances and miniscrew anchorage. An 11- and 3-month-old girl presented with crossbite as the main complaint. The patient was diagnosed with an Angle Class III malocclusion with severe unilateral scissor bite. An Anglebutton™ on the clear aligner appliance and a facemask were used to protract the maxilla during the first set of aligner treatments. Miniscrews were inserted into the posterior region to correct the scissor bite and to intrude posterior teeth, in combination with aligners a

Primate experiments on oral respiration.

Oral respiration associated with obstruction of the nasal airway is a common finding among patients seeking orthodontic treatment. The primate experiments reported here are part of a series designed to test some of the current hypotheses regarding the relationship between mouth breathing and dental malocclusions, that is, between deviations in orofacial muscle recruitment and jaw morphogenesis. Mouth-breathing was developed in the animals of this experiment by obstruction of the nasal passages with silicon nose plugs. The experiments showed that the monkeys adapted to nasal obstruction in diff

Mandibular second molar impaction treatment using skeletal anchorage.

The mandibular second molar impaction is a rare dental anomaly with a very challenging treatment. Although there are some treatment modalities, often the proper option is surgical exposure and orthodontically assisted eruption with a high rate of success depending on the appropriate appliance design, which assures a good control of the tooth movement with minimum side effects. A case report of a severe bilaterally impaction of the mandibular second molar in an adolescent female patient is presented, successfully treated using a miniplate, as skeletal anchorage.

Orthodontic management of missing lateral incisor by miniscrew-anchored device.

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common tooth anomalies associated to therapeutic sets of problems. Orthodontists should consider these clinical cases because management often requires an integrated orthodontic and restorative approach. In the present study authors reported a therapy note referred to a 14-year-old male patient affected by missing maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral dental Class II and deep bite, treated in 2009 at the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Messina. An orthodontic treatment has been planned with the aim of distalize maxillary molar and

Management of Protruding Premaxilla in Bilateral Complete Cleft Lip and Palate Using an Intraoral Orthodontic Appliance: A Case Report.

Protruding premaxilla is common in patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate. A 4-year-old patient with protruding premaxilla and an overjet of 10.3 mm following cleft lip repair was treated using an intraoral removable orthodontic appliance with intra-maxillary traction, supplemented by lip-closure exercises. After 2 months of treatment, the results demonstrated retracted premaxilla, reducing the anterior overjet to within normal limits, enhanced lip-closure at rest, and improved canine relationship and midline. The removable appliance yielded clinically satisfactory results for this patie

Mandibular lip bumper for molar torque control.

Treatment effects of lip bumpers alone include flaring of the mandibular incisors, distalization and uprighting of the mandibular first molars, and buccal expansion of the canines, premolars, and molar. Lip forces are transmitted through this appliance onto the molars. Moreover the lip bumper is able to derotate, expand or constrict, upright and reinforce the anchorage whereas torque control is lacking. Aim of this paper is the presentation of a new type of lip bumper that allows the molar torque control.

Functional appliance therapy to control drooling: a case of a child with mental retardation.

A 12 year old male child with mental retardation was referred to the department of Pedodontics and Preventive Children Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, with a complaint of severe drooling. Mouth closure exercises and speech therapy had failed to control the problem. The patient was given a functional appliance and a significant reduction in the severity of the drooling and reduction in the foul odor was found. Despite its limitations functional appliance therapy could serve as a useful alternative to the use of drugs or surgery in the control of drooling.
