This paper reports the management of a patient with severe localized periodontitis accompanied by drifting and extrusion of a central incisor. Although the traditional treatment approach to this condition often includes extraction and prosthetic replacement, the approach presented here provides an alternative to extraction by combining periodontal and orthodontic treatment.

This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a 26-year-old female patient with overerupted left maxillary molar teeth. Her chief complaint was that the maxillary left first and the second molar intruded into the space required for the mandibular left first and the second molars, preventing prosthodontic treatment. The authors performed a corticotomy and used orthodontic skeletal anchorage with a miniplate and orthodontic miniscrews with a head modified to provide a specially designed hook. With this approach, they were able to achieve a sufficient amount of molar intrusion without disco

Aligner orthodontics has gained significant popularity as an alternative to traditional braces because of its aesthetic appeal and comfort. The biomechanical principles that underlie aligner orthodontics play a crucial role in achieving successful outcomes. The biomechanics of aligner orthodontics revolve around controlled force application, tooth movement, and tissue response. Efficient biomechanics in aligner orthodontics involves consideration of attachment design and optimized force systems. Attachments are tooth-colored shapes bonded to teeth, aiding in torque, rotation, and extrusion mov

The aim is to evaluate the literature for clinical scientific data on possible effects of orthodontic treatment on periodontal status in periodontitis-susceptible subjects. A systematic literature review was performed on studies in English using PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library central databases (1965-2014). By manually searching reference lists of selected studies, we identified additional articles; then we searched these publications: Journal of Periodontology, Periodontology 2000, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Or

BACKGROUND: Since many years, various bonding attachments have been used as a mode of traction for surgically exposed impacted teeth. It has always been a challenge to select an attachment considering predictability of the bonded attachment, mucogingival and periodontal conditions of the overlying tissues, and additional inventory requirement.
METHODS: A 0.010-in. stainless steel ligature wire with eyelets at one end and spiral twisted at the other end was made and used as an attachment to guide surgically exposed impacted canine.
RESULTS: Orthodontic guided eruption of an impacted canine of

The impacted canine is relatively common in incidence and can often lead to difficult treatment planning decisions. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging has improved diagnosis and treatment planning of impacted canines. In particular, this technology has allowed the clinician to accurately locate and visualize these teeth better than ever before, as well as greater appreciate the degree of damage to neighbouring teeth such as lateral incisors. Improved diagnosis and treatment planning with CBCT has therefore resulted in improved treatment outcomes. The objective of this presentation wi

Although evident advances have certainly been made, not only in the use of brackets, but also in the mechanics and type of wires and accessories employed, the most recent systematic review of the literature on this topic stated despite claims regarding the clinical superiority of self-ligating brackets, evidence is generally lacking. Thus, the aim of this study was to show, by means of four clinical case reports, that conventional brackets, used in conjunction with relatively recently introduced thermal nickel-titanium archwires of reduced diameter and extremely light nickel-titanium springs,

AIM: To evaluate the maxillary incisors and canine's immediate movement tendency using three different power arms (PA) height levels during total arch maxillary distalization supported on infrazygomatic crest (IZC) miniscrews according to finite element analysis (FEA).
METHODS: Three finite element models of the maxilla were developed based on CBCT imaging of a teenage male patient presenting a Class II Division 1 malocclusion in the early permanent dentition. Maxillary complex, periodontium, orthodontic accessories, IZC miniscrews and an orthodontic wire were digitally created. The PAs were

This case report describes the successful traction of 2 severely impacted canines. The patient, a 7-year-old girl, had good general health, nasal breathing, crossbite of the lateral incisors and canines, and a Class I molar relationship. The panoramic radiograph showed that the permanent canines were positioned above the roots of the lateral incisors, with the right canine in an accentuated inclination. The cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class III malocclusion with a predominance of horizontal growth. The Haas appliance associated with maxillary protraction was used during the first

Exposure to nickel-containing orthodontic appliances may cause intra- or extraoral allergic reactions. Nickel is the most typical antigen implicated in causing allergic contact dermatitis, which is a Type IV delayed hypersensitivity immune response. This report presents an unusual reaction to nickel during the orthodontic treatment of an adult female patient. The patient had no previous history of allergy and had been wearing fixed metal upper appliances while in orthodontic treatment to assist the eruption of her impacted teeth. The adverse hypersensitivity reactions appeared only after the s

Orthodontic traction of impacted teeth has typically been performed using full fixed appliance as anchorage against the traction force. This conventional approach can be difficult to apply in the mixed dentition if the partial fixed appliance offers an insufficient anchor unit. In addition, full fixed appliance can induce unwanted movement of adjacent teeth. This clinical report presents 3 cases where impacted teeth were recovered in the mixed or transitional dentition with skeletal anchorage on the opposite arch without full fixed appliance. Instead, intermaxillary traction was used to bring

Reduced periodontal support is a challenge that clinicians often face during rehabilitation of compromised dentition. The close and intricate relationship between the periodontal tissues and the processes of tooth movement suggest that adjunct orthodontic therapy may play an important role in overcoming these problems. On the other hand, excessive movement of teeth beyond the anatomic boundaries of the alveolar process is commonly believed to contribute to further destruction of the periodontal tissues. This review evaluates the clinical effects of various orthodontic tooth movements on the su

BACKGROUND: Palatally impacted maxillary canines may appear unsightly after treatment because of changes in position and colour.
AIM: To determine if palatally impacted canines treated either by surgical exposure and orthodontic repositioning or by creation of space in the arch and unassisted eruption have different aesthetic outcomes.
METHODS: Twenty eight subjects with unilateral palatally impacted canines who had completed orthodontic treatment at least 6 months previously were recruited from three specialist practices. In 14 subjects the canines had been treated by surgical exposure, ort

Impaction of a central maxillary incisor is relatively rare and, consequently, poses all the more problems to the diagnosing practitioner. The etiology, when known, can implicate the presence of an obstacle hindering eruption or a trauma to the temporary dentition. Central incisor impaction is revealed during routine examination or following concern on the part of parents who have noticed that a tooth is missing on the arch. When confronted with this anomaly, the practitioner should determine the precise position of the unerupted tooth and offer a customized treatment protocol. Whenever possib

BACKGROUND: Forced eruption of an impacted tooth usually requires surgical and orthodontic interventions to successfully bring the tooth into the dental arch. The clinical time required for a forced eruption is difficult to predict before treatment begins and success rates are affected by several factors before and after an eruption. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the success of forced eruption, the duration of orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth, and the reasons for re-operation and forced eruption failure in a various teeth and cases.
METHODS: In this retrospec

The aim of this article is to describe a case of a young orthodontic patient in which an impacted maxillary canine was repositioned in the central incisor position. A severe resorption of the root of the central right maxillary incisor by ectopic eruption of the impacted right maxillary canine is described. The canine was repositioned in the incisor's position to avoid resorption of the roots of the adjacent teeth during the disinclusion. The central incisor was extracted and the canine was extruded by a closed eruption technique. When the canine eruption was complete, the tip, the torque and
