Veganism is a form of nutrition that is becoming increasingly popular. There is also a pandemic-related increase in mental illness, which often manifests itself in the form of an eating disorder among children and adolescents. Particularly challenging in nutritional therapy is anorexia nervosa in combination with veganism. There is consensus that a correctly implemented vegan diet can generally cover the daily nutritional requirements. However, this does not apply to people who are in a growth period. Therefore, this article attempts to highlight the special requirements of a vegan diet along t

PURPOSE: Orthorexia is a recent construct describing an unhealthy and extreme concern for healthy food. To date, its relationship with other eating disorders (EDs) remains unclear, and little is known about the development of this condition. Current literature suggests that a thorough knowledge about nutrition and alimentation, as in the case of experts in the field of dietetics, could foster the development of orthorexic tendencies. The aim of this study was to compare orthorexia between ED patients, student dietitians and general population.
METHODS: A total of 90 female participants (age:

PURPOSE: Orthorexia nervosa is defined as the fixation on health-conscious eating behaviour and has recently been discussed as a new variant of disordered eating. The aim of the present study was to analyse orthorexic eating behaviour in an inpatient treatment sample of female anorexics to investigate the relation between anorexic and orthorexic eating behaviour.
METHOD: Female anorexic patients with low (n = 29) and pronounced (n = 13) orthorexic eating behaviour as well as a matched control group composed of healthy females (n = 30) were compared with regard to several aspects of disordered

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) often emerge in adolescence and are influenced by family factors. Parental eating attitudes, including orthorexic tendencies, may be associated with adolescent ED severity. We examined parental orthorexic tendencies, cognitive rigidity, and nutritional knowledge in relation to adolescents' ED symptoms.
METHODS: The sample comprised 59 adolescents (93.2% female; mean age = 18.34 ± 3.78 years) and their parents (36 dyads; 23 single parents). Parents completed measures of orthorexia (ORTO-R), cognitive rigidity (D-FLEX), and an ad hoc nutritional knowledge qu

AIM: Numerous studies have now shown that those with eating disorders have statistically higher rates of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, much less is known about the eating behaviours of adults with OCD. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise the existing literature describing pathological eating behaviours in adults with OCD and/or obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms.
METHOD: The databases PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and PsychNet were searched in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

BACKGROUND: As climate change intensifies, ecological concerns and climate worry are becoming more prevalent, paradoxically driving both pro-environmental behaviors and mental health risks. Their impact on eating behaviors remains unclear. This study uses network analysis to examine the complex relationships between eating-related eco-concerns, climate change worry, sustainable dietary behaviors, and disordered eating in the general population.
METHODS: The participants filled in the Eating-related eco-concern (EREC), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Eating Habits Qu

There are a significant number of studies on cognitive restraint among individuals with varying dietary patterns. Although most research has found that vegetarians report higher levels of cognitive restraint compared to non-vegetarians, many studies have contributed inconsistent results. The aim of the current study, therefore, was to assess any differences between groups with varying dietary patterns on cognitive restraint and other disordered eating pattern. The second objective was to examine determinants of cognitive restraint in individuals adhering to a vegan diet, a vegetarian diet and

PURPOSE: Orthorexia nervosa (ON), defined as an excessive preoccupation with healthy eating, has gained more interest in the literature over these past few years. However, little is known about its risk and protective factors, in particular with regards to personality.
METHODS: A total of 3235 college students (10.32% men, 89.67% women) with a mean age of 21.13 (SD = 2.23) answered self-administered questionnaires assessing ON, psychopathological symptoms, and personality disorders including schizotypal, borderline, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive, and narcissistic personality. (1) Background: A new mental illness is attracting the attention of researchers and mental health professionals. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a possible new mental disorder, the main symptom of which is an obsessive and insecure focus on healthy foods and consequent compulsive behaviors. There is a common consensus among researchers that ON is considered partly overlapping with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs). (2) Methods: MEDLINE and Scopus were searched for articles published in the last 10 years regarding the psychophysiological aspects of OCD and ON. Eight studies met the eligibility c

COVID-19 pandemic and its socio-economic consequences have been influencing considerably the Greek population and especially those people that are vulnerable or are actually suffering from a mental disorder. Considering eating disorders (ED) there are reports of a number of factors that increase the stress experienced by patients. The most important of them are:1 A. Quarantine and house confinement. Many ED patients report poor relationships with other family members or in some cases falling victims of some type of abusive behavior by other family members. Prolonged compulsory house confinemen

The increasing use of visual social media has intensified societal pressure to achieve flawless skin and may contribute to excessive preoccupation with appearance and skincare. The emerging terms dermorexia and cosmeticorexia have been used to describe potentially compulsive skincare behaviors extending beyond conventional self-care. This narrative review examines the proposed concept of dermorexia, its conceptual overlap with recognized psychiatric conditions, potential risk factors and clinical manifestations, dermatological and psychological consequences, and implications for aesthetic prac

Background/Objectives: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), a condition marked by an obsessive focus on eating healthily, has drawn increasing clinical attention due to its rigid dietary patterns and social impairment. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and unstable interpersonal relationships, frequently co-occurs with eating disorders. Recent research suggests that autistic traits-such as cognitive rigidity and restricted interests-may underlie both ON and BPD, especially in female populations. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of orthor

Videos glamourising disordered eating practices and body image concerns readily circulate on TikTok. Minimal empirical research has investigated the impact of TikTok content on body image and eating behaviour. The present study aimed to fill this gap in current research by examining the influence of pro-anorexia TikTok content on young women's body image and degree of internalisation of beauty standards, whilst also exploring the impact of daily time spent on TikTok and the development of disordered eating behaviours. An experimental and cross-sectional design was used to explore body image an

BACKGROUND: Mediterranean diet (Med-D) has been previously suggested for athletes, but Paralympics usually have a low intake of plant foods. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) can drive dietary intake of both athletes and gym attendees.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare dietary intakes and food habits of elite wheelchair basketball athletes (WBA) and able-bodied individuals who practice or not sport activity and with different fat mass percentage (FM%).
METHODS: We recruited 15 WBA from the Italian National team and 3 control groups (15 each group): healthy individuals who do not practice any sports activ

INTRODUCTION: The Eating Habits Questionnaire (EHQ) is a key tool in evaluating orthorexia nervosa, an obsession with healthy eating. However, the evaluation process of EHQ has witnessed considerable variation, with one item notably excluded from the last phase of its development. This study undertakes a thorough re-evaluation of the English version of the EHQ, focusing on its original 35 items, within two diverse populations (fashion models and university students) where English serves predominantly as a second language.
METHODS: Through an online survey involving 163 female models and 243 n

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is the persistent concern of maintaining the self-imposed diet to improve one's health. Many factors have been associated to ON in univ-ersity students.
AIM: To assess the prevalence of ON in Italian and Spanish university students in relation to eating attitude and psychological distress, and the possible overlaps between ON (evaluated with different scored questionnaires from the originally proposed ORTO-15), distress and risk of eating disorders.
METHODS: This study was carried out on 160 students recruited at La Sapienza University of Rome and at the C
