Gene encoding prolactin in cinnamon clownfish Amphiprion melanopus and its expression upon acclimation to low salinities.

BACKGROUND: Prolactin (PRL) is a key hormone for osmoregulation in fish. Levels of PRL in the pituitary gland and plasma ion composition of clownfish seem to change to regulate their hydromineral balance during adaptation to waters of different salinities. In order to understand osmoregulatory mechanism and its association with growth performance and PRL in fish, the gene encoding PRL and its expression level in cinnamon clownfish Amphiprion melanopus upon acclimation to low salinity was analyzed. RESULTS: The PRL gene of A. melanopus encoded a protein of 212 amino acid residues comprised of

Diabetes insipidus, Sheehan's syndrome and pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of vasopressin in osmoregulation in two successive pregnancies in a woman with Sheehan's syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: Diabetes insipidus (DI) became manifest during two pregnancies in a woman with postpartum hypopituitarism. RESULTS: Water deprivation-vasopressin administration tests demonstrated partial central DI, corrected with vasopressin in week 12, but only with desmopressin in the third trimester, when placental cystylamino peptidase (vasopressinase) contributes to the severity of the DI. CONCLUSION: If DI occurs during pregnancy it may be the first manifestat

The current state of nonuremic applications for extracorporeal blood purification.

Despite the commonly accepted indications for hemodialysis and extracorporeal depuritive techniques, some clinicians have come to rely on blood purification for clinical states where the targeted substance for removal differs from uremic waste products. Over the last decade, a number of studies have emerged to help define the application of extracorporeal blood purification (ECBP) to these "nonuremic" indications. This review describes the application of extracorporeal blood purification in clinical states including sepsis, rhabdomyolysis, congestive heart failure, hepatic failure, tumor lysis

Leucine-rich repeat containing 8A contributes to the expansion of brain ventricles in zebrafish embryos.

The sodium osmotic gradient is necessary for the initiation of brain ventricle inflation, but a previous study predicted that organic and inorganic osmolytes play equivalently important roles in osmotic homeostasis in astrocytes. To test whether organic osmoregulation also plays a role in brain ventricle inflation, the core component for volume-regulated anion and organic osmolyte channel, lrrc8a, was investigated in the zebrafish model. RT-PCR and whole-mount in situ hybridization indicated that both genes were ubiquitously expressed through to 12 hpf, and around the ventricular layer of neur

[COEVOLUTION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS].

Coevolution - the interaction of different species of animals that are closely related biologically but do not exchange genetic information. The article discusses the problem of coevolution of physiological systems within an organism as the interrelated development of structure, function and systems of their re- gulation during the formation of living systems. We consider the coevolution of osmoregulation and type of metabolism of nitrogen compounds, systemic and individual strategy of coevolution of cell volume re- gulation in poikiloosmotic and homoioosmotic animals, coevolution of effectory

Recurrent Adipsic Hypernatremia in a Fully Independent Non-psychiatric Patient With Multiple Congenital Anomalies: A Case Report.

Osmoregulation is a fundamental process of homeostasis that maintains metabolic and biochemical reactions, thermoregulation, and fluid-electrolytes balance. Fluid-electrolytes imbalance leads to various clinical manifestations ranging from mild weakness to severe neurological dysfunction. Adipsic hypernatremia is an exceedingly rare life-threatening condition characterized by defective osmoregulatory mechanisms. It is more often reported in patients with severe untreated psychiatric disorders for unknown etiologies, but it may result from congenital or acquired hypothalamic lesions in the form

[Hyponatremia - causes, diagnostic evaluation and treatment].

Intact osmoregulation prevents osmotic gradients thereby limiting cell swelling and shrinking. Hyponatremia is a state of an osmole-free water excess compared to the amounts of solutes and clinical management of hyponatremic patients requires pathophysiology-oriented approaches to select appropriate treatments. Clinicians need to assess the patient's volume status to differentiate hyponatremia with volume depletion, expansion or normovolemia, respectively. In addition, work-up includes differentiation between acute and chronic and asymptomatic and symptomatic hyponatremia. Estimation of free w

[Diabetes insipidus in a patient with small-cell lung cancer: a paradox?].

We observed oat-cell lung carcinoma in a man who presented with diabetes insipidus. The chest radiograph showed a suspect nodule within a context of major nicotine addiction. Histopathological examination of the transbronchial biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of oat-cell carcinoma. Brain CT revealed metastasis to the pituitary gland and the pituitary stalk. Vasopressin was undetectable. This case illustrates an uncommon clinical presentation of small-cell lung carcinoma. Oat-cell carcinoma can modify osmoregulation in two different ways. Only sporadic cases of neurogenic diabetes insipidus due t

Late transfer to seawater improves intestinal development of osmoregulatory capacity in Atlantic salmon smolts.

The development and function of intestinal fluid transport capacity in Atlantic salmon, determine seawater (SW) readiness, but poorly understood in modern aquaculture practices. This study aimed to investigate the development of intestinal fluid transport capacity during smoltification and the effect of short-term fasting and a high-lipid diet. Two identical experiments were conducted using two feed types during smoltification: (1) control and (2) high-lipid diet with extra 5% fat. Smoltification was induced by a 6-week short-day (12L:12D) photoperiod, followed by continuous light (LD 24:0) at

[Hyponatremia : Etiology, diagnosis and acute therapy].

Hyponatremia is one of the most common electrolyte disorders in emergency departments and hospitalized patients. Serum sodium concentration is controlled by osmoregulation and volume regulation. Both pathways are regulated via the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Syndrome of inappropriate release of ADH (SIADH) may be caused by neoplasms or pneumonia but may also be triggered by drug use or drug abuse. Excessive fluid intake may also result in a decrease in serum sodium concentration. Rapid alteration in serum sodium concentration leads to cell swelling or cell shrinkage, which primarily

Persistent nephrogenic diabetes insipidus following lithium therapy.

We report the case of a patient who developed severe hypernatraemic dehydration following a head injury. Ten years previously he had been diagnosed to have lithium-induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, and lithium therapy had been discontinued. He remained thirsty and polyuric despite cessation of lithium and investigations on admission showed him to have normal osmoregulated thirst and vasopressin secretion, with clear evidence of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Lithium induced nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is considered to be reversible on cessation of therapy but polyuria persisted in th

Chronological study of the appearance of adenohypophysial cells in the ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis).

We previously reported the chronological appearance of adenohypophysial cells in freshwater teleosts using an immunocytochemical technique. The present study investigated the chronological appearance of adenohypophysial cells in the ayu, which is spawned and has its early development in brackish water, and the results were compared with those obtained in freshwater and seawater teleosts, as well as in other vertebrates. In the adult teleostean adenohypophysis, seven or eight types of secretory cells have been distinguished, each of which produce different hormones: prolactin (PRL), growth horm

Prolonged prenatal hypernatremia alters neuroendocrine and electrolyte homeostasis in neonatal sheep.

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a neuroendocrine hormone synthesized in the hypothalamus, and is stored and secreted by the posterior pituitary gland in response to stimuli such as plasma hypertonicity and hypotension. The primary physiologic roles of AVP include plasma osmolality and blood pressure regulation. We have previously demonstrated that chronic prenatal plasma hypertonicity alters the AVP regulatory pathway in newborn lambs. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate prolonged effects of antenatal plasma hypertonicity on neonatal plasma osmoregulation. Pregnant ewes at 119 +

CSF and plasma vasopressin concentrations in dementia.

In 16 patients with primary degenerative dementia mean CSF vasopressin concentration was lower (0.9 +/- 0.1 pg/ml (mean +/- SEM)) than in 28 control patients (1.3 +/- 0.1 (mean +/- SEM)) (p less than 0.01). In 18 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus and potentially reversible dementia mean CSF vasopressin concentration (1.2 pg/ml +/- 0.1 (mean +/- SEM)) was not different from that found in controls. Several of the demented patients had inappropriate plasma vasopressin concentrations suggesting a defect in osmoregulation. These findings encourage further clinical trials of vasopressin in

Vasopressin at Central Levels and Consequences of Dehydration.

Disorders of water balance are a common feature of clinical practice. An understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of central vasopressin release and perception of thirst is the key to diagnosis and management of these disorders. Mammals are osmoregulators; they have evolved mechanisms that maintain extracellular fluid osmolality near a stable value, and, in animal studies, osmoregulatory neurons express a truncated delta-N variant of the transient receptor potential vannilloid (TRPV1) channel involved in hypertonicity and thermal perception while systemic hypotonicity might be perce

Transcriptomic changes in the jerboa supraoptic nucleus during osmotic stress: PCSK1 and PTPRN changes are conserved across desert and mesic species.

The supraoptic nucleus (SON) is a hypothalamic region essential for the orchestration of osmoregulation in mammals. We sought to understand how gene expression in the SON is orchestrated in a rodent species adapted for survival in arid desert conditions. After an acclimatisation period, we compared the male and female trancriptomes of the Lesser Egyptian jerboa (Jaculus jaculus) SON under euhydrated, dehydrated, and rehydrated conditions. Gene expression in the jerboa SON was remarkably stable across the conditions with only 46 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after dehydration and 4 DEGs

The role of outer membrane in Serratia marcescens intrinsic resistance to antibiotics.

Three different porins from Serratia marcescens were described. They were named Omp1, Omp2 and Omp3 and their molecular weights were 42, 40 and 39 kDa respectively. Omp2 and Omp3 showed osmoregulation and thermoregulation in a similar way to OmpC and OmpF of Escherichia coli. Permeability coefficients of the outer membrane of this species were calculated following the Zimmermann and Rosselet method. P values were similar to those obtained in Escherichia coli, which suggests that the chromosomal beta-lactamase would play a major role in the resistance of Serratia marcescens to beta-lactam antib

Biological shifts of endemic pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi) during spawning migration between a highly alkaline soda lake and a river.

Lake Van is the largest lake in Türkiye (3.775 km2) and the world's largest soda lake. Pearl mullet (Alburnus tarichi), also known as the Van fish, is endemic to Lake Van and is accepted as an endangered species. Pearl mullet migrate from Lake Van to the freshwater streams in spring for spawning. This study aimed to investigate the responses of the antioxidant, osmoregulation, and energy metabolism and also the histological changes in pearl mullets before and after spawning. Fish were sampled in the mouth of the River Karasu for the pre-spawning and the upper part of the river for post-spawnin

The osmoresponsiveness of oxytocin and vasopressin neurones: Mechanisms, allostasis and evolution.

In the rat supraoptic nucleus, every oxytocin cell projects to the posterior pituitary, and is involved both in reflex milk ejection during lactation and in regulating uterine contractions during parturition. All are also osmosensitive, regulating natriuresis. All are also regulated by signals that control appetite, including the neural and hormonal signals that arise from the gut after food intake and from the sites of energy storage. All are also involved in sexual behaviour, anxiety-related behaviours and social behaviours. The challenge is to understand how a single population of neurones
