Hyperprolactinemia alters insulin resistance profiles in overweight males.

Objective. Elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) is an endocrine disorder associated with metabolic dysfunctions such as insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, and glucose intolerance on many occasions. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, which is one of the most important determinants of overweight males for hyperprolactinemia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hyperprolactinemia on insulin resistance parameters including HOMA-IR, QUICKI, TG/HDL, and TyG index values in overweight male patients. Patients and Meth

Uncovering hidden vitamin D deficiency in overweight children.

Vitamin D deficiency is disproportionately prevalent among overweight and obese children, with conventional explanations such as poor dietary intake or reduced sun exposure offering only partial insight. Emerging evidence reveals a multifactorial pathophysiology, including sequestration of vitamin D in adipose tissue, altered hepatic metabolism, diminished bioavailability, and inflammation-induced resistance at the tissue level. These mechanisms contribute to a functional deficiency, wherein serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels may remain suboptimal despite adequate intake or sun exposure. Obesity

Comparison between normal-weight and overweight bulimic patients.

PURPOSE: Body mass index has been often reported in the normal range in bulimic patients and the literature considering the association between bulimia nervosa (BN) and overweight is scant. The aim of the present study was to compare two groups of normal and overweight BN patients, carefully assessed for several clinical and psychopathological features. METHODS: In the present cross-sectional study, a consecutive series of 124 female BN patients was divided into two groups according to their BMI: normal-weight group (with BMI ≤25; N = 91) and overweight group (with BMI >25; N = 33). The two c

Seat belt use among overweight and obese adolescents.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for adolescents. Previous studies with adults found an association between weight status and decreased use of seat belts. Research has also found significantly higher morbidity and mortality rates in obese individuals who are involved in motor vehicle crashes. If these relationships hold true in obese adolescents they represent additional risk factors for complications from motor vehicle trauma. Given the prevalence of obesity in adolescents (17.4%) and the increased risk of harm associated with obese individuals involved in motor vehicle cr

Three-year follow-up data in overweight treatment.

Reassessed 3 years after the termination of a weight reduction program the body weight of former participants to control long-term efficiency of behavior-oriented weight reduction programs. Of 31 former participants, 21 could be rechecked. Most of the Ss stabilized their body weight or continued to reduce weight. Only 4Ss regained weight over the 3-year period. On an average, the group of former Ss lost 4.4 kilograms over the follow-up period. The whole reduction (therapy time and follow-up) resulted in 11.3 kilograms. Three results are encouraging, but difficult to discuss because no member o

Prenatal education of overweight or obese pregnant women to prevent childhood overweight (the ETOIG study): an open-label, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate whether pre and perinatal education of pregnant women would reduce childhood overweight. METHODS: Four French centers included women at ≤21 gestational weeks (GWs) with body mass index (BMI) >25 kg/m2 before pregnancy. Patients were randomized to a control group (routine care including at least one dietary visit) or an intervention group (2 individuals (26 and 30 GW) and 4 group sessions (21, 28, 35 GW, 2 months postpartum)) aimed at educating the future mother regarding infant and maternal nutrition. The primary objective was to reduce post-natal excessive we

Modifiable risk factors in the first 1000 days for subsequent risk of childhood overweight in an Asian cohort: significance of parental overweight status.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Many studies have identified early-life risk factors for subsequent childhood overweight/obesity, but few have evaluated how they combine to influence risk of childhood overweight/obesity. We examined associations, individually and in combination, of potentially modifiable risk factors in the first 1000 days after conception with childhood adiposity and risk of overweight/obesity in an Asian cohort. METHODS: Six risk factors were examined: maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity (body mass index (BMI) ⩾25 kg m-2), paternal overweight/obesity at 24 months post delivery,

Prevention of Overweight in Infancy (POI.nz) study: a randomised controlled trial of sleep, food and activity interventions for preventing overweight from birth.

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight gain during the first three years of life predicts child and adult obesity, and also later cardiovascular and other morbidities. Cross-sectional studies suggest that infant diet, activity and sleep are linked to excessive weight gain. As intervention for overweight children is difficult, the aim of the Prevention of Overweight in Infancy (POI.nz) study is to evaluate two primary prevention strategies during late pregnancy and early childhood that could be delivered separately or together as part of normal health care. METHODS/DESIGN: This four-arm randomised controlle

The Healthy Start project: a randomized, controlled intervention to prevent overweight among normal weight, preschool children at high risk of future overweight.

BACKGROUND: Research shows that obesity prevention has to start early. Targeting interventions towards subgroups of individuals who are predisposed, but yet normal weight, may prove more effective in preventing overweight than interventions towards unselected normal weight subsets. Finally, interventions focused on other factors than diet and activity are lacking. The objectives were to perform a randomized, controlled intervention aiming at preventing overweight in children aged 2-6 years, who are yet normal weight, but have high predisposition for future overweight, and to intervene not only

Umbilical vein remodeling is associated with pregestational maternal overweight.

INTRODUCTION: Excess weight during pregnancy is a condition that can affect both mother and fetus, through the maternal-fetal interface, which is constituted by the placenta and umbilical cord. The umbilical vein is responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, and its proper functioning depends on the integrity of its structure. The remodeling of the umbilical vein represents one of the causes of inadequate transport of nutrients to the fetus, being potentially harmful. This study aims to evaluate whether maternal overweight alters the structural characteristics of the umbil

Overweight Infants Hospitalized for Bronchiolitis Associated With Severe Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Overweight negatively affects pediatric respiratory function. In this study, we evaluate if overweight is associated with more severe bronchiolitis in hospitalized infants. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed infants aged 30 to 365 days hospitalized for bronchiolitis from September 2019 to April 2020. Exclusion criteria included known risk factors for severe bronchiolitis, asthma treatment, or bacterial pneumonia. Weight-for-length z-score was categorized per the World Health Organization's growth assessments as overweight (z-score >2), underweight (z-score <-2), and

Fat mass and vascular health in overweight/obese children.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. Body mass index (BMI), the most widely used marker of body fatness, has serious limitations, particularly in children, since it does not accurately discriminate between lean and fat mass. Aim of our study was to investigate if the estimate of fat mass, as derived by a new prediction model, was associated with carotid intima media thickness (IMT) and the cross-sectional area of the intima media complex (CSA-IMC) in overweight or obese children. METHODS AND RESULTS: As many as 375 over

Fifteen-minute consultation: The overweight teenage girl with acne.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition which often presents in adolescence. The symptoms and signs, which include obesity, acne, hirsutism and irregular menstrual periods, can have profound psychosocial, metabolic and reproductive consequences. Diagnosis in the adolescent population can be particularly difficult as there is significant overlap between the clinical features of PCOS and those of normal pubertal development. International guidelines published in 2018 have produced diagnostic criteria for adolescents to aid the physician, but there will still be many case

Gut microbiota and overweight in 3-year old children.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota has been associated with overweight and obesity in adults, but the evidence in children is limited. Our aim was to study whether composition of the gut microbiota at the age of 3 years is associated with overweight/obesity in children cross-sectionally. METHODS: Children, who participated in a clinical trial of prenatal vitamin-D supplementation (VDAART), underwent standardized height and weight measurements, and collection of stool samples at 3 years of age. 16 S rRNA sequencing (V4 region) of the stool samples were performed with Illumina MiSeq. Asthma and overweight/obese: double trouble for urban children.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of overweight/obese versus normal weight on symptoms, activity limitation and health care utilization among a group of urban children with persistent asthma. METHODS: Data were obtained from the School Based Asthma Therapy trial. We enrolled 530 children ages 3-10 with persistent asthma from 2006 to 2009 (response rate: 74%). We conducted in-home interviews to assess symptoms and health care utilization. We measured height and weight in school nurse offices to determine BMI percentile, and compared normal weight children to overweight/obese (BMI >85th percen
