Effect of water temperature and salinity in oviposition, hatching success and infestation of Aphanoblastella mastigatus (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) on Rhamdia quelen.

Several environmental parameters may influence biological processes of several aquatic invertebrates, such as the Monogenea. Current analysis investigates oviposition, hatching success and infestation of Aphanoblastella mastigatus, a parasite of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen at different temperatures (~ 24 and 28 °C) and salinity (by adding sodium chloride to water, at concentrations 0, 5 and 9 g/L) in laboratory. There was no significant difference in oviposition rate and in A. mastigatus infestation success at 24 and 28 °C. On the other hand, the concentration 9 g/L of sodium chloride in

Volatiles emitted from eight wound-isolated bacteria differentially attract gravid screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to oviposit.

Bovine blood inoculated with bacteria isolated from screwworm [Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae)]-infested animal wounds was tested as an attractant for oviposition for gravid screwworms. Eight species of gram-negative coliform (Enterobacteriaceae) bacteria mixed with bovine blood singly or all species combined and incubated for various times produced volatiles that attracted gravid flies in a cage bioassay in varying numbers. In 15-min duration tests, volatiles from five species of bacteria (Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia rettger

Non-consumptive effects of a predatory mite volatile: Dimethyl trisulfide disrupts mating, oviposition, and ovarian development in Phthorimaea operculella.

BACKGROUND: Predator-derived chemical cues suppress pest reproduction through non-consumptive pathways and may be exploitable as semiochemicals in integrated pest management. We evaluated the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the predatory mite Pyemotes zhonghuajia, for their inhibitory effects on reproduction in the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella, PTM). RESULTS: Screening of 34 mite-associated VOCs identified dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) as the strongest oviposition suppressor. In dose-response assays, DMTS reduced egg-laying (>80% at 0.9 mg mL-1), shortened the oviposit

Palmitic and stearic acids increase oviposition behavior and residence time as contact-based arrestants in Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), known as spotted-wing drosophila, is an invasive fruit fly that lays their eggs in soft-skinned fruits with its serrated ovipositor. In this study, we evaluated the effects of oviposition and residence behavior of D. suzukii by two saturated fatty acids (FAs): palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0). Both FAs were identified from a novel D. suzukii attractant, Decoy Attract and Kill, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. The FAs were then tested for their potential to alter oviposition in l

Semi-field experiments and sibship analyses reveal larval habitat size preferences and skip oviposition behaviour in female Anopheles arabiensis.

BACKGROUND: Since the turn of the century, long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) have played a major role in malaria control. However, the effectiveness of these tools is declining due to the development of insecticide resistance and other factors, creating an urgent need for complementary strategies. Larval source management (LSM), through the application of biological larvicides or the autodissemination of larvicides by ovipositing female mosquitoes, offers alternative avenues to target malaria vectors. Predicting the effectiveness of such approache

Oviposition behaviour and biochemical response of an insect pest, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to plant phenolic compound phloroglucinol.

Phenolic compounds are the secondary metabolites (SMs) present in plants carrying different bioactivities. In the present study, we explored the influence of a phenolic compound namely phloroglucinol on oviposition behaviour and different biochemical entities of an insect pest Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae) using artificial diet. Phloroglucinol (IUPAC name: benzene-1,3,5-triol) affected the activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes viz. superoxide dismutases (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidases (APOX). dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), peroxidases (POX

Oviposition Preference and Larval Performance of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), Spotted-Wing Drosophila: Effects of Fruit Identity and Composition.

A better understanding of the factors affecting host plant use by spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) could aid in the development of efficient management tools and practices to control this pest. Here, proxies of both preference (maternal oviposition behavior) and performance (adult emergence) were evaluated for 12 different fruits in the form of purees. The effect of the chemical composition of the fruits on preference and performance traits was then estimated. We synthesized the literature to interpret our findings in the light of previous studies that measured oviposition preferen

Attraction and oviposition preferences of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae), vector of Old-World cutaneous leishmaniasis, to larval rearing media.

BACKGROUND: As part of a project aimed at developing oviposition attractants for the control and surveillance of Phlebotomus papatasi (a vector of Old-World cutaneous leishmaniasis), we tested the hypothesis that gravid sand flies are attracted to chemical cues emanating from the growth medium of conspecific larvae - predominantly larvae-conditioned host feces that represents a suitable oviposition site. We report the results of a systematic assessment of media from various developmental stages of the sand fly using oviposition and olfactometer behavioral assays. METHODS: We conducted multipl

Quercetin stimulates an accelerated burst of oviposition-based reproductive strategy in codling moth controlled by juvenile hormone signaling pathway.

The advantageous characteristics of invasive pests, particularly their ability to reproduce and adapt to the environment, have been observed. However, it remains unclear what specific inherent superiority enables fruit pests to successfully invade and dominate in interactions with other species. In this study, we report that Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus), a notorious invasive pest of pome fruits and walnuts globally, employs unique reproductive strategies in response to quercetin, a plant compound in host fruits. By monitoring adult dynamics and fruit infestation rates, we observed a competitive

Methods for quantifying eggs and oviposition rate of Dawestrema cycloancistrium (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae), monogenean parasite of Arapaima gigas (Teleostei: Osteoglossidae).

Dawestrema cycloancistrium is the main ectoparasite causing mortality in fingerlings of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) in Amazonian aquaculture. Very little is known about the D. cycloancistrium reproductive index and appropriate methods of collecting eggs for investigation. This study aimed to determine the oviposition rate of D. cycloancistrium. To achieve this aim, two egg quantification methods were tested: the estimative method (ME) and the total counting method (MT). Compared with the MT, the ME overestimated the number of eggs counted, which were 2943.5 ± 2840.6 and 1041.5 ± 533 eggs, and th

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Discontinuities in understanding follicular development, the ovulatory cycle and the oviposition cycles in the hen: Advances, opportunities, slow downs and complete stops.

There has been considerable progress in understanding follicular development, the ovulatory cycle and the oviposition cycles in the hen. In particular, there have been tremendous advances in understanding follicular development and recruitment of follicles to the hierarchy of large yellow follicles. There is a need to continue to follow the earlier literature while employing present techniques. Early work allowed an understanding of the ovulation and oviposition cycles. Models for ovulation were developed. However, while these have no passed the test of time, there is no present model that ful

Impact of mycolactone produced by Mycobacterium ulcerans on life-history traits of Aedes aegypti (L.) and resulting habitat selection for oviposition.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is a globally recognized, yet largely neglected tropical disease whose etiologic agent is Mycobacterium ulcerans. Although the exact mode of transmission is unclear, epidemiological evidence links BU incidence with slow-moving or stagnant, aquatic habitats, and laboratory-based experiments have shown disease manifestation in animals with dermal punctures. Therefore, hypotheses for transmission include contact with slowmoving aquatic habitats and associated biting aquatic insects, such as mosquitoes. Recent research demonstrated the toxin produced by M. ulcerans, mycolactone,

Ovipositional preferences, damage thresholds, and detection of the tomato-potato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli (Homoptera: Psyllidae) on selected tomato accessions.

The tomato-potato psyllid Bactericera [Paratrioza] cockerelli (Sulc) has recently caused losses exceeding 50% on fresh market tomatoes in California and Baja, Mexico by injecting a toxin that results in a condition known as 'psyllid yellows'. The objectives of this study were to: (i) document oviposition preferences on a range of tomato cultivars; (ii) determine threshold levels for psyllid densities that would cause psyllid yellows on tomatoes within the first three weeks following transplanting; and (iii) identify the most important 'psyllid yellows' symptoms that might be used in surveying

Silver nanoparticles containing stearic acid isolated from Catharanthus roseus: Ovicidal and oviposition-deterrent activities on Earias vittella and ecotoxicological studies.

In the recent past, many agrochemicals have been used to control pests, but many of these fail due to the development of resistance. Many researchers, therefore, concentrate on developing new pesticide formulations from natural resources (plants/microorganism). In the present study, different extracts from Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle) was evaluated for their ovicidal and oviposition deterrent activities against Earias vittella (spiny bollworm). Among the tested extracts DCM (Dichloromethane) extract showed highest ovicidal activity (70.47%) and oviposition deterrent activity (75
