As of March 2021, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) in the United States have lost more than 800 lives to COVID-19-the highest per capita death rate in 18 of 20 US states reporting NHPI deaths. However, NHPI risks are overlooked in policy discussions. We discuss the NHPI COVID-19 Data Policy Lab and dashboard, featuring the disproportionate COVID-19 mortality burden for NHPIs. The Lab democratized NHPI data, developed community infrastructure and resources, and informed testing site and outreach policies related to health equity.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, demographics, diagnostic clinical manifestations, and severity of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in Maori and Pacific Island children compared to European children.
METHODS: A chart review was conducted of all children with JIA seen by Auckland pediatric and rheumatology services between the years 2000 and 2015. Demographic data and diagnostic clinical manifestations, including poor prognostic features, were collated. The incidence, diagnostic, clinical manifestations, and severity of JIA were determined and compared between ethnic groups, in particu

Obesity and pregnancy both place the liver under metabolic stress, but interactions between obstetric obesity and bilirubin metabolism have not been studied. We determined associations between obesity, maternal/neonatal bilirubin levels, and uridine 5'diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1) enzyme that eliminates bilirubin. Adult livers were analyzed for UGT1A1 expression, activity, and bilirubin clearance by pharmacokinetic modeling. Then, matched maternal and neonatal sera (N = 450) were assayed for total and unconjugated bilirubin. Associations between obesity, UGT1A1, maternal and

This study assesses the relative fit of risk/protective and social ecological models of youth violence among predominantly Asian and Pacific Islander students. Data from a 2007 survey of two multi-ethnic high schools in Hawai'i were used. The survey assessed interpersonal youth violence, suicidality and risk and protective factors. Two models of youth violence (risk/protective and social ecological) were tested using structural equation modeling. We found good fits for the risk/protective model (χ(2) = 369.42, df = 77, P < .0001; CFI = .580; RMSEA = .066) and the ecological model (χ(2) = 1763.

The mental health of American military soldiers and veterans is of widespread concern; yet, there has been no prior review of studies on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) veterans. This article provides a brief, but comprehensive review of the mental health of AAPI veterans. An exhaustive literature search was conducted using the major medical and mental health literature databases. Of 13 identified articles, nine were empirical studies on either post-traumatic stress disorder among AAPI Vietnam veterans or health functioning of AAPI veterans based on national veteran surveys. This longitudinal study examined racial differences in depressive symptoms at three time points among Asian, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) and white mothers at-risk for child maltreatment (n = 616). The proportion of mothers with depressive symptoms ranged from 28 to 35% at all time points. Adjusted analyses revealed that Asian and NHOPI mothers were significantly more likely than white mothers to have depressive symptoms but this disparity was present only among families at mild/moderate risk for child maltreatment. Future research should identify ways to reduce this disparit

We examined the prevalence and correlates of HIV-related sexual risk and substance use behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander (API) male-to-female (MTF) transgendered individuals, referred to here as API transgendered women. As part of a larger study on HIV risk among transgendered women of color (Nemoto, Operario, Keatley, Han, & Soma, 2004), a sample of 110 API transgendered women in San Francisco completed individual interviews, of which 13% reported being HIV-positive. In the past 30 days, one fifth of the sample engaged in unprotected receptive anal intercourse (URAI) with any male partne

PURPOSE: [corrected] To compare the prevalence of selected risk behaviors among Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) students and white, black, and Hispanic high school students in the United States.
METHODS: The national Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 1997 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention produced nationally representative samples of students in grades 9 through 12 in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. To generate a sufficient sample of AAPI students, data from these four surveys were combined into one dataset yielding a total sample

OBJECTIVE: A survey of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) in the Pacific island population of Western Samoa in 1978 (n = 1,206) documented a relatively high prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and obesity. A follow-up survey was performed in 1991 (n = 1,776) to assess changes in NCD prevalence and risk factor distribution over 13 years.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In both surveys, the same representative villages from one urban and two rural areas were studied, and the survey procedure included an oral glucose tolerance test, anthropometric and blood pressure measuremen

Four new species of Careproctus (Cottoidei: Liparidae) are described from the Bussol Strait (the deepest channel of the Kuril archipelago) and two neighboring abyssal basins of the Western North Pacific. Careproctus laperousei sp. nov. from the northern slope of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (depths of 4796-4803 m) has the following characters: vertebrae 57, pectoral-fin rays 26, principal caudal-fin rays 8 and pore pattern 2-6-7-1; it differs from the most similar congeners from the North Pacific in having a black peritoneum, short head (22.5 % of standard length, SL) and large disk (37.0 % of h

Four species of adult herbivorous surgeonfishes (Family Acanthuridae) were collected from the remote South-Pacific island system of Tuvalu. Their intestinal contents were examined, and of four populations of ciliated protists, two new species were discovered and are described. Ciliates were examined after protargol staining and, in some cases, scanning electron microscopy. Members of each population were examined and 10 characters measured for the balantidia, and 13 for the paracichlidotherids. A new Balantidium is described which has an unusually large dextr-oral field of cilia. A new species

Racial and ethnic minority groups, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities, experience multilevel barriers to cancer screening and enrollment into cancer clinical trials. Such barriers include low health literacy, mistrust in the healthcare system, and access to affordable healthcare. To address these barriers, a pilot outreach program was developed with the primary aims to build partnerships between rural Oahu communities and healthcare systems through collaboration between a Community Health Educator (CHE), a healthcare provider (HCP), and a clinic research coordina

Citizenship status confers rights and access to healthcare, yet little is known about how it impacts contraception use and type of method use. This study examined the role of citizenship status on contraceptive use among reproductive-aged (18-44 years), cis-gender Latinx and Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women. This study used the 2017-2020 waves of the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). Inclusion criteria included cisgender, heterosexual Latinx and API women of reproductive age (18-44 years) who were at risk of becoming pregnant (N = 3,027). Participants were classified into the fo

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates have increased substantially among Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Veterans who are more likely to use suffocation as a suicide method than Veterans overall. This study examined demographic, healthcare and injury characteristics of AANHPI Veterans who died by suicide through suffocation and examined the contexts of these deaths. Analyses further examined if there were differences between AANHPI and non-AANHPI Veterans who died by suffocation suicide.
METHODS: This mixed methods analysis used National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are at increased risk for downstream pregnancy-related complications, yet the variability in this risk among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander individuals remains understudied. This study investigated the risk for 5 HDP outcomes-chronic hypertension, chronic hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and severe preeclampsia or eclampsia-among 15 disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander subgroups and assessed maternal characte

RRehabilitation programs targeting hospitalized geriatric patients reduce functional decline and 30-day readmission rates. Limited data exist regarding using rehabilitation programs with Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHPI) and Asian populations. In the current study, the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) program was implemented to help minimize delirium, prevent deconditioning, and secure appropriate discharge. Utilizing a multidisciplinary team protocol, patients older than age 60 with an Activity Measure for Post-Acute Care (AMPAC) score of at least 18 and admitted within the precedi

BACKGROUND: Research is needed to fully investigate the differential mechanisms racial and ethnic groups use to deal with ongoing intersectional racism in women's lives. The aim of this paper was to understand how Asian American and Pacific Islander, Black, Latina, and Middle Eastern women experience racism-from personal perceptions and interactions to coping mechanisms and methods of protection.
METHODS: A purposive sample of 52 participants participated in 11 online racially/ethnically homogeneous focus groups conducted throughout the USA. A team consensus approach was utilized with codeboo
