Climate and satellite indicators to forecast Rift Valley fever epidemics in Kenya.

All known Rift Valley fever virus outbreaks in East Africa from 1950 to May 1998, and probably earlier, followed periods of abnormally high rainfall. Analysis of this record and Pacific and Indian Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies, coupled with satellite normalized difference vegetation index data, shows that prediction of Rift Valley fever outbreaks may be made up to 5 months in advance of outbreaks in East Africa. Concurrent near-real-time monitoring with satellite normalized difference vegetation data may identify actual affected areas.

Imminent rapid decline of the Indonesian Throughflow after reaching a turning point of CO2 concentration.

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) represents the only tropical inter-ocean pathway of global ocean circulation and plays a central role in the Earth's climate system. Climate models suggest that the ITF would be weakened under global warming, but historical observations indicate a contradictory trend. Here using CMIP6 simulations, we find that the response of the ITF to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is nonlinear and exhibits an abrupt rapid decline after surpassing a turning point. The ITF's decline can be explained by the response of its halosteric and thermosteric

Phylogeography and historical demography of the anadromous fish Leucopsarion petersii in relation to geological history and oceanography around the Japanese Archipelago.

Phylogeographical patterns of marine and diadromous organisms are often influenced by dynamic ocean histories. For example, the marine realm around the Japanese Archipelago is an interesting area for phylogeographical research because of the wide variation in the environments driven by repeated shifts in sea level in the Quaternary. We analysed mitochondrial cyt b gene and nuclear myh6 gene sequences for individuals collected from throughout the range of the anadromous fish Leucopsarion petersii to assess the lineage divergence, phylogeographical pattern and historical demography in relation t

Unexpected limitation of tropical cyclone genesis by subsurface tropical central-north Pacific during El Niño.

The vast tropical Pacific is home to the majority of tropical cyclones (TCs) which threaten the rim countries every year. The TC genesis is nourished by warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs). During El Niño, the western Pacific warm pool extends eastward. However, the number of TCs does not increase significantly with the expanding warm pool and it remains comparable between El Niño and La Niña. Here, we show that the subsurface heat content change counteracts the favorable SSTs in the tropical central-north Pacific. Due to the anomalous positive wind stress curl, the 26 °C isotherm shoals duri

The Ocean Serves as a Net Source of Atmospheric Nitric Oxide but a Net Sink of Nitrogen Dioxide.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), comprised of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), play a crucial role in the global nitrogen cycle, but the oceanic occurrence remained unclear. Here, we show an integrated underway observation of oceanic and atmospheric NO and NO2 from the coastal seas to the open ocean in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWPO). The concentrations of NO and NO2 showed similar distribution patterns that the coastal seas with rich nitrogen nutrients showed higher levels, like the Yellow Sea (7.6 and 19.9 pmol L-1) and the East China Sea (11.8 and 23.3 pmol L-1), while the oligotro

Zika virus outside Africa.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus related to yellow fever, dengue, West Nile, and Japanese encephalitis viruses. In 2007 ZIKV caused an outbreak of relatively mild disease characterized by rash, arthralgia, and conjunctivitis on Yap Island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. This was the first time that ZIKV was detected outside of Africa and Asia. The history, transmission dynamics, virology, and clinical manifestations of ZIKV disease are discussed, along with the possibility for diagnostic confusion between ZIKV illness and dengue. The emergence of ZIKV outside of its previously known geograp

PATHOGENIC LEPTOSPIRA SEROVARS IN FREE-LIVING SEA LIONS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA AND ALONG THE BAJA CALIFORNIA COAST OF MEXICO.

The California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus ), a permanent inhabitant of the Gulf of California in Mexico, is susceptible to pathogenic Leptospira spp. infection, which can result in hepatic and renal damage and may lead to renal failure and death. During summer 2013, we used the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) to investigate the prevalence of anti-Leptospira antibodies in blood of clinically healthy sea lion pups from seven rookery islands on the Pacific Coast of Baja California (Pacific Ocean) and in the Gulf of California. We also used PCR to examine blood for Leptospira DNA. Isol

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Trichiurus japonicus resolves species boundaries and evolutionary history of cutlassfishes in Northwest Pacific.

Persistent taxonomic uncertainty has plagued the Trichiuridae family (hairtails), a group of ecologically and commercially significant fishes, a result of conflicting morphological criteria and historical misclassifications. While molecular approaches have advanced understanding their taxonomy, mitochondrial-based analyses and misapplied nomenclature have obscured species boundaries and population dynamics. Here, we integrate a chromosome-level genome assembly of Trichiurus japonicus with whole-genome resequencing of congeneric species to resolve the taxonomic ambiguity in Trichiurus. Combinin

Redox-stratified macromolecule degradation supports microbial survival in the oligotrophic Kermadec Trench sediments.

Kermadec Trench is a hadal ecosystem in the South Pacific with the water depth 10,047 m. The trench bottom harbors a highly active and populated microbial community, despite the surface sediment is characterized as extremely pressurized, oligotrophic and with low oxygen concentration. It is intriguing, as well as technically challenging, to investigate the microbial adaptation strategies therein. Here we performed the in situ RNA fixation on sediment samples with the assistant of Fendouzhe manned submersible, to approach natural status of microbial metabolisms on both genomic and transcriptomi

Evidence for the acquisition of a proteorhodopsin-like rhodopsin by a chrysophyte-infecting giant virus.

Chrysophytes are nanoflagellate protists widespread in aquatic ecosystems with diverse trophic roles as primary producers and bacterivores. Molecular evidence suggests that chrysophytes are commonly infected by giant viruses, but isolates of such virus-host systems have not been reported. Here, we describe the first cultivated chrysophyte-infecting virus, Chrysophyceae Clade H virus SA1 (ChrysoHV), isolated along with its phago-mixotrophic host alga from surface waters in the tropical North Pacific Ocean. The ChrysoHV capsid (290 ± 40 nm diameter) is associated with a loose, sac-like membrane

More than one: A second eastern Pacific species of Cymothoa (Crustacea: Isopoda) in the SE Gulf of California, Mexico.

A second species of "tongue-eaters," the cymothoid isopod Cymothoa facimar sp. nov., is described from the coasts of Sinaloa on the Mexican Pacific coast. Twenty-seven females and five males of the new species were collected from the oral cavity of the snappers Lutjanus peru and L. aratus caught for sale in Mazatlán fish markets. The new species is morphologically similar to C. exigua, the previously known species reported from the Eastern Pacific, in general shape of body, cephalon, the anterior pereonites, pereopods and pleotelson; however, they can be easily differentiated because adult fem

Evidence from sperm whale clans of symbolic marking in non-human cultures.

Culture, a pillar of the remarkable ecological success of humans, is increasingly recognized as a powerful force structuring nonhuman animal populations. A key gap between these two types of culture is quantitative evidence of symbolic markers-seemingly arbitrary traits that function as reliable indicators of cultural group membership to conspecifics. Using acoustic data collected from 23 Pacific Ocean locations, we provide quantitative evidence that certain sperm whale acoustic signals exhibit spatial patterns consistent with a symbolic marker function. Culture segments sperm whale population

Coast-wide recruitment dynamics of Olympia oysters reveal limited synchrony and multiple predictors of failure.

Recruitment of new propagules into a population can be a critical determinant of adult density. We examined recruitment dynamics in the Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida), a species occurring almost entirely in estuaries. We investigated spatial scales of interannual synchrony across 37 sites in eight estuaries along 2,500 km of Pacific North American coastline, predicting that high vs. low recruitment years would coincide among neighboring estuaries due to shared exposure to regional oceanographic factors. Such synchrony in recruitment has been found for many marine species and some migratory est

[Ultrastructure of melanocytes from retina and choroid of the Pacific salmon].

The ultrastructure of the retina and choroid cells in three species of the Pacific salmon, Oncohrynchus gorbuscha, O. keta and O. masou, was studied. The structure of retina pigment cells is similar in all the three species, only a small difference was found in the percentage of lengthened and rounded forms of melanosomes. Melanocytes of the masu salmon differ also in the structure of their nuclei. The pigment cells of choroid differ from those of retina by a more extended form of melanosomes and by the presence of less rounded melanosomes. In the chum salmon retina we found electron lucent "c

Mercury transport and human exposure from global marine fisheries.

Human activities have increased the global circulation of mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Mercury can be converted into methylmercury, which biomagnifies along aquatic food chains and leads to high exposure in fish-eating populations. Here we quantify temporal trends in the ocean-to-land transport of total mercury and methylmercury from fisheries and we estimate potential human mercury intake through fish consumption in 175 countries. Mercury export from the ocean increased over time as a function of fishing pressure, especially on upper-trophic-level organisms. In 2014, over 13 metric tonnes of

Recent increase in Nybelinia surmenicola prevalence and intensity in Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) off the United States west coast.

A larval marine cestode was found in 82.0% of 834 Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) stomachs collected from 341 trawl stations along the United States west coast during the summers of 2008 and 2009. Morphology and DNA sequencing was used to identify the cestode as Nybelinia surmenicola. In an examination of 131 Pacific hake stomachs collected from the same region in 1999, N. surmenicola prevalence was 35.1%. The results from a general linear model suggested that their prevalence is influenced by year and latitude, Pacific hake size, and sex. Mean intensity of N. surmenicola in 2008-2009 was
