Experience reorganizes content-specific memory traces in macaques.

Memory formation relies on the reorganization of neural activity patterns during experience that persist in subsequent sleep. How these processes promote learning while preserving established memories remains unclear. Here we recorded neural ensemble activity from the hippocampal and associated regions in freely moving macaques as they recalled item sequences presented that day ('new'), 1 day earlier ('recent') or more than 2 weeks earlier ('old'). Cell assemblies biased for old sequences showed less drift, greater network connectivity and stronger sleep reactivation than new-biased assemblies

Phonological overlap alone does not mediate generalization in action-effect learning: Evidence from homophones.

Intentional action is guided by learned relations between actions and their effects, but it remains unclear which features of an effect support generalization of such learning. We tested whether phonological information can retrieve learned action-effect relations and bias voluntary action selection. Japanese homophones provide a stringent test because words can share pronunciation while differing in meaning and visual or orthographic form. In four preregistered experiments, Japanese participants learned arbitrary pairings between left/right keypresses and pictures or Kanji characters. They th

Anterograde and retrograde memory in children anesthetized with propofol.

Prior to anesthesia with propofol for gastrointestinal endoscopy, sets of pictures were presented to 20 children and adolescents (M age = 12 years). Word pairs (e.g., "hiking-woods") were presented via earphones after the children were anesthetized. Upon regaining consciousness, the children were tested for explicit memory of both the picture sets and word pairs by free recall, cued recall, and yes/no recognition. Implicit memory was tested by free association to category cues for the pictures and by word association for the word pairs. Postoperative testing revealed retrograde memory for mate

Training synesthetic letter-color associations by reading in color.

Synesthesia is a rare condition in which a stimulus from one modality automatically and consistently triggers unusual sensations in the same and/or other modalities. A relatively common and well-studied type is grapheme-color synesthesia, defined as the consistent experience of color when viewing, hearing and thinking about letters, words and numbers. We describe our method for investigating to what extent synesthetic associations between letters and colors can be learned by reading in color in nonsynesthetes. Reading in color is a special method for training associations in the sense that the

Primed lexical decision task in fearful and nonfearful individuals.

Participants were 32 spider-fearful, 33 blood-injury-injection-fearful, and 28 nonfearful individuals (N = 93) who took part in a primed lexical decision task (LDT) and who were presented with blood-, spider-, neutral-, positive-, and pseudo-word stimuli. Participants decided whether 1 or both words in a word pair were real English words or nonwords; if both were real words, participants responded one way, and if 1 or more of the stimuli were nonwords, participants responded a different way. Participants responded to nonword-nonword stimuli faster than to other stimuli pairs. In addition, part

Chronometrics of attentional processes in anxiety disorders.

Two experimental paradigms were used to test for the presence of attentional bias in patients with panic disorders and social phobias. The results of the first experiment on the detection of visual probes employing the paradigm of MacLeod et al. indicate specific affects as a function of the physical or social emotional connotation of the probe words. Attention of patients with panic disorders was apparently restricted to words denoting physical threat. No effect related to the threatening connotation of words was observed for the social-phobia patients. In contrast, the control subjects prese

Effects of Aversive Classical Conditioning on Sexual Response in Women With Dyspareunia and Sexually Functional Controls.

INTRODUCTION: In dyspareunia-a somatically unexplained vulvovaginal pain associated with sexual intercourse-learned pain-related fear and inhibited sexual arousal are supposed to play a pivotal role. Based on research findings indicating that enhanced pain conditioning is involved in the etiology and maintenance of chronic pain, in the present study it was hypothesized that enhanced pain conditioning also might be involved in dyspareunia. AIM: To test whether learned associations between pain and sex negatively affect sexual response; whether women with dyspareunia show stronger aversive lear

Monolingual and Bilingual Infants' Ability to Use Non-native Tone for Word Learning Deteriorates by the Second Year After Birth.

Previous studies reported a non-native word learning advantage for bilingual infants at around 18 months. We investigated developmental changes in infant interpretation of sounds that aid in object mapping. Dutch monolingual and bilingual (exposed to Dutch and a second non-tone-language) infants' word learning ability was examined on two novel label-object pairings using syllables differing in Mandarin tones as labels (flat vs. falling). Infants aged 14-15 months, regardless of language backgrounds, were sensitive to violations in the label-objects pairings when lexical tones were switched com

Generalization of pain-related avoidance behavior based on de novo categorical knowledge.

People with chronic pain often fear and avoid movements and activities that were never paired with pain. Safe movements may be avoided if they share some semantic relationship with an actual pain-associated movement. This study investigated whether pain-associated operant responses (movements) can become categorically associated with perceptually dissimilar responses, thus motivating avoidance of new classes of safe movements-a phenomenon known as category-based avoidance generalization. Using a robotic arm, 2 groups were trained to categorize arm movements in different ways. Subsequently, the

Normalization of mediotemporal and prefrontal activity, and mediotemporal-striatal connectivity, may underlie antipsychotic effects of cannabidiol in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating ingredient present in cannabis extract, has an antipsychotic effect in people with established psychosis. However, the effect of CBD on the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying psychosis is unknown. METHODS: Patients with established psychosis on standard antipsychotic treatment were studied on separate days at least one week apart, to investigate the effects of a single dose of orally administered CBD (600 mg) compared to a matched placebo (PLB), using a double-blind, randomized, PLB-controlled, repeated-measures

Impulsivity in panic disorder: neuropsychological correlates.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity plays a prominent role in numerous psychopathological states and poses an important clinical dilemma. However, different aspects of impulsivity are related to mood disorders, addictions, personality disorders, eating disorders, the relationship between anxiety and impulsivity is controversial and not well explored. The impact of anxiety on cognitive functioning is less explored than in other disorders (e.g. depression). The findings on cognitive functioning and impulsivity in anxiety disorders are inconsistent and are most likely due to methodological differences betwee

Chronic neurobehavioral effects of Tokyo subway sarin poisoning in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder.

Chronic neurobehavioral effects of acute sarin poisoning were evaluated in 9 male and 9 female patients who were exposed to sarin poisoning in the Tokyo subway incident in Japan. The investigators used nine neurobehavioral tests, as well as a posttraumatic stress disorder checklist, 6-8 mo after the poisoning occurred. Serum cholinesterase activity in patients on the day of poisoning (i.e., March 20, 1995) ranged from 13 to 131 IU/l (mean=72.1 IU/l). The results of analysis covariance, in which age, education level, alcohol consumption, and smoking status (covariates) were controlled in 18 sar

Neural signatures of test-potentiated learning in parietal cortex.

Testing, or retrieval practice, is beneficial for long-term memory both directly, by enhancing performance on tested information, and indirectly, by facilitating learning from subsequent encounters with the information. Although a wealth of behavioral research has examined the "testing effect," neuroimaging has provided little insight regarding the potential mechanisms that underlie the benefits of retrieval practice. Here, fMRI was used to examine the effects of retrieval practice on later study trials. Human subjects studied pairs of associated words, which were then tested, restudied, or ne

Effects of Opioid Dependence on Visuospatial Memory and Its Associations With Depression and Anxiety.

Introduction: The cognitive impact of opioid dependence is rarely measured systematically in everyday clinical practice even though both patients and clinicians accept that cognitive symptoms often occur in the opioid-dependent population. There are only a few publications which utilized computerized neuropsychological tests to assess possible impairments of visuospatial memory in opioid-dependent individuals either receiving opioid replacement therapy (ORT) or during subsequent short-term abstinence and the effects of anxiety and depression. Methods: We assessed a cohort of 102 participants,

The effect of picture priming on event-related potentials of normal and disabled readers during a word recognition memory task.

Normal and one subtype of disabled readers were compared in their visual event-related potentials (ERPs) that were elicited by primed and unprimed words during a recognition memory task. The primed words were preceded by a picture having the same denotative meaning, while unprimed words were preceded by a picture having a non-associated meaning. Normal readers exhibited consistently greater amplitude than the disabled readers to unprimed words with a negative wave at 455 ms (N400). For the disabled readers, this N400 was evident, though somewhat smaller, than for controls, at fronto-central pl

A comparison between transient amnesias induced by two drugs (diazepam or lorazepam) and amnesia of organic origin.

The transient amnesias produced by drugs may have much in common with the more permanent amnesias associated with organic brain damage. This possibility was investigated using two benzodiazepines, diazepam and lorazepam, with medical student volunteers. In Experiment 1, 27 subjects received a 2ml intravenous injection of either diazepam (7.5 mg) or of lorazepam (3.0 mg) or of normal saline. In Experiment 2, a further 13 subjects were given lorazepam (2.5 mg) or saline. A double blind procedure was used. Neither drug had an appreciable effect on span-type short-term memory (except with 2-channe

Differential effects of two blockers of small conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels, apamin and lei-Dab7, on learning and memory in rats.

SK channels are responsible for long-lasting hyperpolarization following action potential and contribute to the neuronal integration signal. This study evaluates the involvement of SK channels on learning and memory in rats, by comparing the effects of two SK channel blockers, i.e., apamin which recognizes SK2 and SK3 channels, and lei-Dab7 which binds SK2 channels only. lei-Dab7 totally competes and contests apamin binding on whole brain sections (IC(50): 11.4 nM). Using an olfactory associative task, intracerebroventricular blocker injections were tested on reference memory. Once the task wa

Visual agnosia: a case of reduced attentional "spotlight"?

A case study is presented of a patient with presenile dementia, for whom the dominant clinical feature from onset was a visual agnosia. The characteristics of the patient's visual agnosia were investigated in light of her apparent use of a "feature-by-feature" strategy to identify objects. Results from various tasks showed that the patient was unable to use global shape information or other grossly defined property cues characteristic of a "wide angle" attentional processing stage (Treisman, 1988) in object recognition. The patient appeared instead to rely on 'parts' or identifying features of
