Indolent palatal swelling: Catch 22.

We present an interesting but intriguing case of an indolent palatal swelling. The lesion was asymptomatic causing little discomfort to the patient and thus was an incidental clinical finding. Provisional diagnosis was a benign, minor salivary gland tumor. Clinical differential diagnoses included benign lymphoepithelial lesion or mucus extravasation phenomenon. Nevertheless, we also considered malignancies such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, lymphoma, and neoplasm of the maxillary sinus. However, the histopathology revealed a rare clinicopathologic entity prompting immediate treatment of the les

Late metastasis of an intracranial meningioma to the hard palate.

Meningiomas are benign neoplasms that arise from cellular elements of the meninges. Although meningiomas are usually considered as benign tumors, they have a potential to become aggressive and to metastasize to the extracranial structures. Distant metastasis most commonly occurs in lung, liver, and long bones. We present an extremely rare case of a delayed metastasis of a recurrent intracranial meningioma to the hard palate 19 years after the initial diagnosis. The patient underwent surgical excision without any complication and follow-up showed no recurrence.

[Application of plasma-mediated cold ablation in otorhinolaryngology].

A total of 226 surgical operations were made with a Coblator II plasma surgery system including tonsillectomy, uvulopalatoplasty, reduction of inferior turbinates, and removal of soft palate neoplasm. This method permitted to avoid intraoperative bleeding and reduce to 2% the frequency of hemorrhage in the postoperative period. Moreover, pain syndrome was virtually absent and reactive processes in soft tissues were rare. Taken together, these effects accounted for the lower rate of postoperative complications, faster patients' recovery, and shorter hospitalization time.

A Case Report of Follicular Lymphoma in a Crohn's Disease Patient Treated With Azathioprine.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disorder marked by chronic inflammation affecting the intestines. Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) fall under the IBD umbrella, necessitating diverse treatments, including steroids, immunomodulators like 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and azathioprine (AZA), and biological agents. The prolonged use of immunomodulators, such as AZA, is associated with an elevated risk of developing lymphomas. This case report centers on a 77-year-old gentleman regularly monitored by Gastroenterology, undergoing long-term AZA therapy for CD management. Transpalatal endoscopic endonasal resection of a giant epignathus skull base teratoma in a newborn. Case report.

Teratomas are neoplasms composed of tissues from all three germ layers with varying degrees of differentiation. They are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions and rarely occur in the head and neck region. A teratoma is termed "epignathus" when it arises from the skull base or hard palate and is located in the oral cavity. The authors describe a case of a giant epignathus teratoma originating in the skull base of a neonate, extending bilaterally via two pedicles throughout the hard palate and protruding through the oral cavity. The tumor was completely resected using a t

Poorly Differentiated and Biologically Aggressive Oral Rhabdomyosarcoma in 34 Young Dogs.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm of primitive mesenchymal cells that have the potential to differentiate into skeletal muscle. Case selection required positive expression of both vimentin and desmin, confirmed by immunohistochemistry, and negative expression of cytokeratin. In this study of 34 young dogs, the average age at time of diagnosis was 16.5 months. The majority of tumors were located in the maxilla (n = 26, 76%), whereas a smaller subset (n = 4, 11%) occurred solely within the mandible. One (2.9%) involved the caudal mandible and maxilla, 1 of 34 (2.9%) involved the maxilla

Angiomyxolipoma of the hard palate: a rare case report.

Lipoma is a common, benign soft tissue neoplasm consisting of mature adipocytes. Other variants exist, notably angiomyxolipoma, also referred to as vascular myxolipoma, which is an exceedingly rare benign lipomatous tumor characterized by the intimate admixture of three components: mature adipose tissue, paucicellular myxoid stroma, and a prominent vascular network. We present the case of a 55-year-old female patient who presented with a palatal swelling. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed an angiomyxolipoma. No abnormalities were noted after one year. Angiomyxolipo

Current perspectives on the origin theory of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a histopathologically benign and highly vascular neoplasm, which is mainly seen in young adolescent men. It is a rare tumor, accounting for 0.05% of all head and neck neoplasms. The etiology of JNA has always been a controversial topic. Some researchers believe that it is a genuine tumor. Others consider that it is the result of vascular malformation caused by the non-absorption of artery residues in the first branchial arch during development, and that hormone and genetic effects are also related to its etiology. In addition, the JNA was so called

Myoepithelial neoplasia of the submandibular gland: case report and therapeutic considerations.

Tumors of the submandibular gland typically arise from the seromucinous acini, which make up the majority of the gland. The most common benign tumor of this structure is the pleomorphic adenoma, whereas the most common malignancy of the submandibular gland is adenoid cystic carcinoma. We describe an unusual case of a neoplastic process of the myoepithelial cells of the submandibular gland in a middle-aged woman. This rare tumor is most commonly diagnosed in the parotid gland and in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate; a review of the literature uncovered only 5 previous reports of myo

Low-grade papillary adenocarcinoma of palatal salivary gland origin.

The clinicopathologic features of five low-grade papillary adenocarcinomas of palatal salivary gland origin are presented and seven well-documented cases from the literature are reviewed. Patients in our series ranged in age from 30 to 77 years (median 48). Symptoms were nonspecific and related to a mass present for a long duration. Histologically, these were complex cystic, papillary, focally solid tumors that were partially encapsulated. Cytologically, they were composed of bland, predominantly cuboidal cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm. Four tumors were initially considered to be b

Papillary cystadenoma of anterior one-third of the tongue.

Papillary cystadenoma is an unusual benign cystic neoplasm with cystic spaces of diverse sizes and intraluminal papillary projections histologically, which is commonly seen in the lips, cheek and palate. We report a case of papillary cystadenoma in a 40-year-old man on the anterior one-third of the tongue with classical histological features. The paper highlights the rarity of the site of occurrence with emphasis on differential diagnosis and the need for considering papillary cystadenoma when benign cystic lesions are encountered in the anterior one-third of the tongue.

Oral follicular lymphoma: a clinicopathologic and molecular study.

Follicular lymphoma is a hematolymphoid neoplasm that originates from germinal center B cells. It is made up of a combination of small cleaved centrocytes and a varying quantity of larger non-cleaved centroblasts to describe the clinical, microscopic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of oral follicular lymphomas. Follicular lymphomas affecting the oral cavity were retrieved from pathology files. Immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm the diagnosis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was employed to detect rearrangements in BCL2, BCL6, and MYC genes. Clinical and fo

Minor salivary gland tumors: A clinicopathological study of 18 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Minor salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) are infrequent, representing 10-15% of all salivary neoplasms. Despite this low frequency, MSGTs conform a heterogeneous group of neoplasms characterized by a broad range of histological types. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We identified cases of MSGT in a retrospective study of the biopsies made in the period 1997-2007 in the Service of Oral Surgery (Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona, Spain). The data collected comprised patient age and sex, the clinical characteristics and location of the tumor, the duration of the lesion, its size, the tr

Rare case of giant myoepithelioma in minor salivary glands of palate in a 9-year-old child.

Myoepitheliomas (MEs) are extremely rare benign neoplasms composed of ectodermally derived contractile smooth muscle cells (myoepithelial cells). Various tissues such as the salivary glands, breast, larynx, and sweat glands show the presence of these myoepithelial cells. They occur, principally, in the parotid gland and infrequently in minor salivary glands. The term "Myoepitheliomas" was first coined by Sheldon in 1943. It is an uncommon salivary gland tumor which accounts for < 1% of all major and minor salivary gland tumors. Batasakis considers the ME to be "one-sided" variant at the opposi

A Rare Nasopharyngeal Teratoma Arising From the Vomer.

Teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms derived from the 3 germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm). Nasopharyngeal teratoma is a very rare teratoma arising anywhere from the oronasal cavity, regarded as an expanding, avity filling lesion, with a high mortality rate because of severe airway obstruction, especially in the neonatal period and make up only 2% of all teratomas. The authors present a case of an infant girl with a single, finger-like, hairy teratoma arising from the vomer and protruding from the mouth with bilateral complete cleft palate, cleft lip, and cleft alveolus.
