The causes of early bioprosthesis failure include infective endocarditis, pannus formation, and structural valve deterioration. We reported a patient who suffered from early mitral bioprosthesis failure due to leaflets restricted by the subvalvular apparatus and early pannus formation. In patients with symptoms relapse and mitral regurgitation recurrence early after mitral valve replacement, early pannus formation needs to be anticipated, and surgical intervention should be performed if symptoms persist after medical treatment.

PURPOSE: Cultivated limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation (CLET) is a surgical approach reserved for severe stem cell deficiency and anterior segment pathology. The recipient cornea typically displays a highly vascularized pannus that must be dissected before graft placement. Extensive pannus dissection, however, can result in corneal thinning and increase the risk of ectasia and ultimately, of perforation. We aimed to examine the value of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) intraoperatively during pannus resection and long-term postoperative follow-up of CLET surgery.

Conventional radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the craniovertebral junction were evaluated in 12 patients with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and neck pain with or without other neurologic signs or symptoms of cervical myelopathy. Studies involving disease progression in osteoarthritis (OA) have typically focused on the deterioration of native articular cartilage (AC) rather than the de novo cartilage which is frequently present. We report the morphological changes in a patient with combined pulmonary autograft and homograft dysfunction after 9 years of implantation. The case highlights long-term adaptive changes in the autograft to withstand systemic blood pressure with formation of exuberant pannus rich in elastic tissue. In the homograft, maturation of pannus had produced shortening of the 3 cusps with resultant incompetence.

BACKGROUND: Although the clinical performance of bioprostheses after valve replacement in the aortic and mitral position has been reported, little is known of the performance of tricuspid bioprostheses.
