Variation in functional networks between clinical and subclinical discharges in childhood absence epilepsy: A multi-frequency MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Two types of spike-and-wave discharges (SWDs) exist in childhood absence epilepsy (CAE): clinical discharges are prolonged and manifest primarily as impaired consciousness, whereas subclinical discharges are brief with few objectively visible symptoms. This study aimed to compare neural functional network and default mode network (DMN) activity between clinical and subclinical discharges to better understand the underlying mechanism of CAE. METHODS: Using magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from 21 patients, we obtained 25 segments each of clinical discharges and subclinical discharg

Preserved semantic access in global amnesia and hippocampal damage.

C.B., a right-handed 33-year-old man, presented with anterograde amnesia after acute heart block. Cognitive abilities were normal except for serious impairment of long-term episodic memory. The access to semantic information was fully preserved. Magnetic resonance showed high signal intensity and marked volume loss in the hippocampus bilaterally; the left and right parahippocampal gyrus, lateral occipito-temporal gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, and lateral temporal cortex were normal. This case underlines that global amnesia associated with hippocampal damage does not affect semantic memory. A

Disrupted cognitive network revealed by task-induced brain entropy in schizophrenia.

Brain entropy (BEN), which measures the amount of information in brain activity, provides a novel perspective for evaluating brain function. Recent studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that BEN during rest can help characterize brain function alterations in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, there is a lack of research on BEN using task-evoked fMRI to explore task-dependent cognitive deficits in SCZ. In this study, we evaluate whether the reduced working memory (WM) capacity in SCZ is possibly associated with dynamic changes in task BEN during tasks wi

Effective connectivity underlying neural and behavioral components of prism adaptation.

Prism adaptation (PA) is a form of visuomotor training that produces both sensorimotor and cognitive aftereffects depending on the direction of the visual displacement. Recently, a neural framework explaining both types of PA-induced aftereffects has been proposed, but direct evidence for it is lacking. We employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), a form of effective connectivity analysis, to establish directionality among connected nodes of the brain network thought to subserve PA. The findings reveal two distinct network branches: (1) a loop involving connections from the parietal cortice

A comparison of brain volume and cortical thickness in excoriation (skin picking) disorder and trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) in women.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) and trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder, or HPD) significantly overlap in terms of clinical features. However, few studies have directly compared structural brain data in these disorders. The aim of this study was to compare volumes of brain structures and cortical thickness in patients with SPD and HPD, and determine involvement of fronto-striatal pathways. Seventeen female SPD, 17 HPD and 15 healthy age-matched controls underwent clinical assessment and structural MRI imaging. Group differences were determined in brain volume and cortical thickness, controllin

Pigmentarchitectonic subfields of the entorhinal region as revealed in tangential sections.

The entorhinal region is an important center of the limbic system involved in many dementing disorders. The boundaries of the entorhinal region of the left and right hemispheres were investigated in tangential sections (5 individuals, age range 21 to 29 years). This method preserves the rostral portion of the entorhinal region which is usually lost in coronal sectioning. The sections were stained with the pigment-Nissl-method. The superficial cellular layer of the centromedial part of the entorhinal region consists of large heavily pigmented neurons forming islands clearly separated from each

Mental navigation in humans is processed in the anterior bank of the parieto-occipital sulcus.

We examined the brain regions which were activated during mental navigation; functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 16 right-handed male volunteers. The anterior bank of the parieto-occipital sulcus (APO) was strongly activated in all 16 subjects examined. In group study, the retrosplenial area, the bilateral angular gyrus/occipital cortex junction, the left superior premotor area, the right parahippocampal gyrus, and the right cerebellum were activated commonly across 16 subjects. The APO region activated during mental navigation appeared to be equivalent to the visual area V6

Functional connectivity of the right inferior frontal gyrus and orbitofrontal cortex in depression.

The orbitofrontal cortex extends into the laterally adjacent inferior frontal gyrus. We analyzed how voxel-level functional connectivity of the inferior frontal gyrus and orbitofrontal cortex is related to depression in 282 people with major depressive disorder (125 were unmedicated) and 254 controls, using FDR correction P < 0.05 for pairs of voxels. In the unmedicated group, higher functional connectivity was found of the right inferior frontal gyrus with voxels in the lateral and medial orbitofrontal cortex, cingulate cortex, temporal lobe, angular gyrus, precuneus, hippocampus and frontal

Differential impact of ApoE ε4 on cortical activation during famous face recognition in cognitively intact individuals and patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

This study explores the neurofunctional correlates of the recognition of famous faces in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and healthy controls depending on the genetic risk factor, Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4. An event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment was conducted while participants discriminated between famous and nonfamous faces. We compared the results of 32 healthy controls [17 ApoE ε4 carriers (E4+); 15 noncarriers (E4-)] with those of 30 patients with aMCI (16 E4+; 14 E4-). Despite comparable task performance, patients with aMCI, E4+ showed

Elevated 4-hydroxyhexenal in Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression.

Multiple studies have demonstrated elevations of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes including 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) and acrolein, in vulnerable regions of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), preclinical Alzheimer's disease (PCAD), and late stage Alzheimer's disease (LAD) brain. However, there has been limited study of a third member, 4-hydroxyhexenal (HHE), a diffusible lipid peroxidation product of the ω-3 polyunstataturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In the present study levels of extractable and protein-bound HHE were quantified in the hippocampus/parahippocampal gyrus (HPG), superior and middle temporal g

Neuropathological correlates of behavioural disturbance in confirmed Alzheimer's disease.

Clinico-pathological correlations were examined in 54 patients with neuropathologically verified Alzheimer's disease (AD) who were part of a prospective study. Behavioural disturbance was documented using an expanded version of the Stockton Geriatric Rating Scale (SGRS). The subscores for physical disability (P), apathy (A) and communication failure (C) (summation score PAC) were closely correlated and were high in most patients during the late stages of illness. High PAC scores correlated with an earlier onset and longer duration of illness, lower brain weight, more severe tangle pathology in

Regional homogeneity of resting-state brain abnormalities in bipolar and unipolar depression.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder patients experiencing a depressive episode (BD-dep) without an observed history of mania are often misdiagnosed and are consequently treated as having unipolar depression (UD), leading to inadequate treatment and poor outcomes. An essential solution to this problem is to identify objective biological markers that distinguish BD-dep and UD patients at an early stage. However, studies directly comparing the brain dysfunctions associated with BD-dep and UD are rare. More importantly, the specificity of the differences in brain activity between these mental disorders ha

Emotion Perception in Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia and Alzheimer Disease: The Parahippocampal Conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Emotion perception is the capacity that enables humans to correctly identify the cues that guide interpersonal interactions, forming the basis for social behavior. The parahippocampal cortex may contribute to emotion perception by mediating the associations between context and emotion. Individuals with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer disease (AD) appear to show deficits in this process. Investigating emotion perception impairment in these individuals could offer valuable insights into the underlying neurobiological mechanisms. METHODS: Participants

Common variants of the autism-associated CNTNAP2 gene contribute to the modulatory effect of social function mediated by temporal cortex.

Autistic traits are highly heritable and characterized by social deficits. Common genetic variants of the autism-related CNTNAP2 gene have been linked with social impairments, but the neural substrates are poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the genetic effect of common variants of CNTNAP2 (rs2710102 and rs7794745) on gray matter volume and its association with social performance among 442 healthy participants. Our results showed that individuals with rs2710102 GG homozygotes had smaller left superior temporal gyrus (STG)/insular volume than A-allele carriers (AA and AG),

Simultaneous fMRI-EEG-DTI recording of MMN in patients with schizophrenia.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalogram (EEG), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) recording have complementary spatiotemporal resolution limitations but can be powerful methods when used together to enable both functional and anatomical modeling, with each neuroimaging procedure used to maximum advantage. We recorded EEGs during event-related fMRI followed by DTI in 15 healthy volunteers and 12 patients with schizophrenia using an omission mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm. Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal changes were calculated in a region of intere

Brain compensation and volume alterations in patients with severe knee osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional neuroimaging study.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease worldwide and the leading cause of functional disability. Recent studies have shown alterations in gray matter (GM) volume in areas related to pain sensitivity and perception in patients experiencing chronic pain. These brain changes may be reversible once pain relief is obtained. This study aimed to compare brain volume measurements in patients with chronic pain due to knee OA with healthy controls using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and voxel-based morphometric (VBM) analysis. Additionally, we aimed to correlate these findings

Associations between Verbal Learning Slope and Neuroimaging Markers across the Cognitive Aging Spectrum.

A symptom of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a flat learning profile. Learning slope calculation methods vary, and the optimal method for capturing neuroanatomical changes associated with MCI and early AD pathology is unclear. This study cross-sectionally compared four different learning slope measures from the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (simple slope, regression-based slope, two-slope method, peak slope) to structural neuroimaging markers of early AD neurodegeneration (hippocampal volume, cortical thickness in parahippocampal gyrus, precuneus, and latera

Role of the amygdala in disrupted integration and effective connectivity of cortico-subcortical networks in apathy.

BACKGROUND: Apathy is a quantitative reduction in motivation and goal-directed behaviors, not only observed in neuropsychiatric disorders, but also present in healthy populations. Although brain abnormalities associated with apathy in clinical disorders have been studied, the organization of brain networks in healthy individuals has yet to be identified. METHOD: We examined properties of intrinsic brain networks in healthy individuals with varied levels of apathy. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging in combination with graph theory analysis and dynamic causal modeling analysis, we
