Correlation of a new index reflecting the fluctuation of parasympathetic tone and fetal acidosis in an experimental study in a sheep model.

The autonomic nervous system plays a leading role in the control of fetal homeostasis. Fetal heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a reflection of its activity. We developed a new index (the Fetal Stress Index, FSI) reflecting parasympathetic tone. The objective of this study was to evaluate this index as a predictor of fetal acid-base status. This was an experimental study on chronically instrumented fetal lambs (n = 11, surgery at 128 +/- 2 days gestational age, term = 145 days). The model was based on 75% occlusion of the umbilical cord for a maximum of 120 minutes or until an arterial p

Disturbances of autonomic nervous system activity and diminished response to stress in patients with celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CED) is immune-mediated enteropathy caused by gluten intolerance affecting genetically predisposed individuals. CED may exert a number of various symptoms, including extra intestinal manifestations. Neurological symptoms can be the first sign of gluten intolerance. However, affected autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may be linked to other symptoms. We evaluated the frequency of ANS impairment and resting ANS response to several stimuli in CED patients without neurological manifestations. Twenty five neurologically asymptomatic patients with CED were studied. The medical h

Cardiac autonomic functioning and post-traumatic stress: A preliminary study in youth at-risk for PTSD.

The identification of robust, psychophysiological markers of trauma-related distress is critical for developing comprehensive, trauma-informed, mental health assessments for youth. Thus, the present study examined the clinical utility of cardiac autonomic balance (CAB) and cardiac autonomic regulation (CAR), two composite indices of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. We hypothesized that CAB/CAR would more reliably index post-traumatic stress (PTS) responses compared to measuring the parasympathetic (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA) and sympathetic (i.e., pre-ejection

Cholinergic and neurogenic mechanisms in obstructive airways disease.

Although primary neural control of airway function is through parasympathetic pathways, more recent evidence indicates that there are important adrenergic and non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic neural mechanisms that may also influence respiratory function. The parasympathetic nervous system component includes neural receptors in the airways as well as afferent and efferent pathways that travel in the vagus nerves. Afferent vagal sensory receptors mediate the response to irritant or rapidly adapting receptor activation, Hering-Breuer, and the unmyelinated "C" fibers or "J" receptor pathways. The

Autonomic nervous system and cardiac neuro-signaling pathway modulation in cardiovascular disorders and Alzheimer's disease.

The heart is a functional syncytium controlled by a delicate and sophisticated balance ensured by the tight coordination of its several cell subpopulations. Accordingly, cardiomyocytes together with the surrounding microenvironment participate in the heart tissue homeostasis. In the right atrium, the sinoatrial nodal cells regulate the cardiac impulse propagation through cardiomyocytes, thus ensuring the maintenance of the electric network in the heart tissue. Notably, the central nervous system (CNS) modulates the cardiac rhythm through the two limbs of the autonomic nervous system (ANS): the

Multiple areas of the cerebral cortex influence the stomach.

The central nervous system both influences and is influenced by the gastrointestinal system. Most research on this gut-brain connection has focused on how ascending signals from the gut and its microbiome alter brain function. Less attention has focused on how descending signals from the central nervous system alter gut function. Here, we used retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus to identify the cortical areas that most directly influence parasympathetic and sympathetic control of the rat stomach. Cortical neurons that influence parasympathetic output to the stomach originated fr

Neurophysiologic basis of Back-Shu and Huatuo-Jiaji points.

Acupuncture, a method of traditional Chinese medicine that uses Back-Shu and Huatuo-Jiaji points, is especially effective for treating diseases of the visceral organs. Applying acupuncture on Back-Shu points affects visceral organs in many ways. For example, it dilates the bronchus, affects the heartbeat, stomach motility, urinary bladder contractions and so on. Acupuncture's effects can be explained as viscero-cutaneous, cutaneo-visceral, cutaneo-muscular, and viscero-muscular reflexes. Segmental dispersion of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems is related to the location of Back-Shu

Cardiac Changes in Parkinson's Disease: Lessons from Clinical and Experimental Evidence.

Dysautonomia is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). Most dysautonomic symptoms appear due to alterations in the peripheral nerves of the autonomic nervous system, including both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The degeneration of sympathetic nerve fibers and neurons leads to cardiovascular dysfunction, which is highly prevalent in PD patients. Cardiac alterations such as orthostatic hypotension, heart rate variability, modifications in cardiogram parameters and baroreflex dysfunction can appear in both the early and late stages of PD, worsening as the d

Sympathetic-parasympathetic interaction in health and disease: abnormalities and relevance in heart failure.

Sympathetic-parasympathetic interaction plays a major role in the evolution and outcome of many cardiovascular disorders. Nonetheless, a thorough understanding of this relationship and of its potential implications for prognosis and management still escapes many cardiologists. This article reviews the background of sympathetic-parasympathetic interactions focusing on the best direct evidence available, namely direct neural recordings of the activity of single vagal and sympathetic fibers directed to the heart. It examines indirect but highly reliable markers of this interaction as they can be

Nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy for cervical carcinoma.

With the concept of the improvement of quality of life in the field of surgical oncology, recent studies have questioned the place of radical hysterectomy (RH) in the treatment of cervical carcinoma due to a high rate of long-term postoperative complications involving the pelvic autonomic nerve system. It has been demonstrated that RH frequently causes bladder dysfunction, anorectal mobility disorders, and sexual dissatisfaction in cervical cancer survivors due to surgical trauma involving the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomous innervation of the pelvic organs. [Adipose tissue: an innervated endocrine gland].

Until recently, adipose tissue was considered to function as a passive store of triglycerides and therefore of calories. Fascinating research over the past ten years has altered this traditional perspective. Adipose tissue has been shown to produce hormones. Leptin was discovered in 1994; one of its main functions is to adapt the organism to starvation. Sympathetic nerve fibres were shown to innervate adipose tissue and to facilitate lipolysis leading to the release of glycerol and free fatty acids. In addition, parasympathetic innervation of adipose tissue was recently demonstrated, with anab

Innervation of the smooth muscle of the lower urinary tract.

The lower urinary tract in mammals consists of the bladder, a storage organ for urine, and the urethra through which urine is expelled to the outside. In the male the urethra extends outside the body as the penis. The lower urinary tract is innervated by pelvic (parasympathetic) nerves and hypogastric nerves which combine on each side at the pelvic plexus. Fibres pass to the bladder, urethra, genital organs, rectum and blood vessels. In addition to the pelvic and hypogastric nerves there is sacral outflow to skeletal muscle, such as the external sphincters of the urethra and anus, in the puden

Cardiac autonomic control mechanisms in Chagas' heart disease. Therapeutic implications.

According to the neurogenic theory of Chagas' heart disease, the cardiac parasympathetic abnormalities of chagasic cardiac patients are due to a selective destruction of the cardiac parasympathetic neurons. Trypanosoma cruzi would selectively destroy the cardiac vagal neurons, during the acute stage of the disease. However, these cardiac parasympathetic abnormalities are found mainly in chagasic patients who are in very advanced stages of the disease. Furthermore, the extent of cardiac parasympathetic involvement correlates with the degree of left ventricular dilation. Cardiac parasympathetic

Morphological changes in the rabbit submandibular gland after parasympathetic or sympathetic denervation.

Selective denervation was used to obtain further information about the relative roles of the nerves supplying the gland. Parasympathetic denervation soon caused atrophy in both acinar and granular tubule cells, and a substantial reduction in gland wet weight. The secretory cells had several unusual features, and striated duct cells tended to accumulate glycogen. Three to four weeks after pre-ganglionic parasympathectomy, the parenchymal cells were less abnormal but still smaller than in the control, unoperated gland. Thus, parasympathetic impulses are required to maintain normal parenchymal ce

Sympathetic and parasympathetic subtypes of body-first Lewy body disease observed in postmortem tissue from prediagnostic individuals.

Recent studies suggest the existence of brain-first and body-first subtypes within the Lewy body disorder (LBD) spectrum, including Parkinson's disease. These studies primarily focused on α-synuclein propagation through the parasympathetic vagal and olfactory bulb routes, leaving the possibility of a sympathetic nervous system spreading route unexplored. In the present study, we analyzed two postmortem datasets, which included 173 and 129 cases positive for Lewy pathology. We observed a clear distinction between brain-first and body-first subtypes in early prediagnostic cases with mild Lewy pa
