Impacts of family and community violence exposure on child coping and mental health.

An ecological stress process model was employed to explore relations between children's exposures to family and community violence and child mental health, and emotionally-regulated coping (ERC) as a protective factor among Latino, European-American, and African-American school-aged children (n = 91; girls, n = 50[54 %]) living in single-parent families who were either homeless and residing in emergency shelters or housed but living in poverty. Mothers reported domestic violence experiences and their child's history of physical/sexual abuse, community violence exposures, and mental health. Chi

Building long-term family resilience through universal prevention: 10-year parent and child outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has been highly stressful for parents and children, it is clear that strategies that promote long-term family resilience are needed to protect families in future crises. One such strategy, the Family Foundations program, is focused on promoting supportive coparenting at the transition to parenthood. In a randomized trial, we tested the long-term intervention effects of Family Foundations on parent, child, and family well-being one to two months after the imposition of a national shelter-in-place public health intervention in 2020. We used regression models to test inte

Parental reactions to parent- and sibling-directed aggression within a domestic violence context.

Parent- and sibling-directed aggression by minor children are two forms of family violence that often co-occur and have strong relations to prior exposure to domestic violence, yet are often overlooked in intervention efforts. In addition, current research does not examine these forms of family violence in tandem, and there is very limited research with samples exposed to domestic violence. To better understand how these forms of aggression operate within a domestic violence context, we interviewed 44 women residing in a domestic violence shelter with at least one child over 3.5 years of age w

Growth Is Rarely a Straight Line: Developmental Path of Early Metacognition, Role of Parental Metacognitive Talk and Influence on Children's Memory.

Rudimentary metacognitive skills emerge early in infancy. To date, however, little is known about the developmental course of these early skills or the factors involved in their development. To address this gap, the present study aimed to: (a) map the developmental trajectory of metacognitive uncertainty from 18 to 36 months; (b) examine whether parental metacognitive talk during play predicts this development; and (c) test the relations between these two factors and children's later memory performance. Using a longitudinal design, 60 parent-child dyads were tested every 6 months using an eye-

Tough love or hostile domination? Psychological control and relational induction in cultural context.

The authors examined 2 forms of parental psychological control and how they related to child behavior problems in 2 cultural groups. A sample of 165 Hong Kong (HK) Chinese and 96 European American (EA) parents completed measures of parental control strategies, parental rejection, and child behavior problems. The use of hostile psychological control (criticism, interference, invalidation) was more strongly associated with the use of relational induction (guilt induction, shaming, reciprocity, social comparison) among EAs compared with HK parents. Psychological control was related to parental re

Are Parenting Practices Associated with the Development of Narcissism? Findings from a Longitudinal Study of Mexican-origin Youth.

Narcissism is an important and consequential aspect of personality, yet we know little about its developmental origins. Using data from a longitudinal study of 674 Mexican-origin families, we examined cross-lagged relations between parenting behaviors (warmth, hostility, monitoring) and narcissism (superiority, exploitativeness). Parental hostility at age 12 was associated with higher levels of exploitativeness at age 14, whereas parental monitoring at age 12 was associated with lower levels of exploitativeness at age 14. These effects replicated across three different parenting measures: chil

Political violence and child adjustment: longitudinal tests of sectarian antisocial behavior, family conflict, and insecurity as explanatory pathways.

Understanding the impact of political violence on child maladjustment is a matter of international concern. Recent research has advanced a social ecological explanation for relations between political violence and child adjustment. However, conclusions are qualified by the lack of longitudinal tests. Toward examining pathways longitudinally, mothers and their adolescents (M = 12.33, SD = 1.78, at Time 1) from 2-parent families in Catholic and Protestant working class neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed measures assessing multiple levels of a social ecological model. Maternal disapproval of friends in response to child conduct problems damages the peer status of pre- and early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Herein, we consider the hypothesis that mothers harm peer relations when they respond to child conduct problems by expressing disapproval of friends, which exacerbates the behavior problems they were presumably attempting to deter. METHODS: A community sample of Lithuanian adolescents (292 boys and 270 girls, aged 9-14 years) completed surveys three times during an academic year. Classmate nominations indexed peer status (acceptance and rejection), self-reports described perceived maternal disapproval of friends, and peer nominations and self-reports separately gauged conduct prob

Maternal adverse childhood experiences, executive function & emotional availability in mother-child dyads.

BACKGROUND: Maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with difficulties in parent-child relationships; however, current research has primarily used cross-sectional designs. Parent and child behavior may be differentially affected by ACEs as children develop and caregiving demands change. Furthermore, diminished executive function (EF) is associated with both ACEs and parenting difficulties and may be a mechanism underlying the intergenerational effects of ACEs. OBJECTIVE: This study examined longitudinal associations between maternal ACEs, maternal EF, and patterns of chang

Inter-parental conflict and children's academic attainment: a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests a link between inter-parental conflict and children's psychological development. Most studies, however, have tended to focus on two broad indices of children's psychological adaptation (internalizing symptoms and externalizing problems) in considering the effects of inter-parental conflict on children's development. The present longitudinal study extends this body of research by considering the impact of inter-parental conflict on children's low academic attainment among a sample of 230 schoolchildren (age 11-13 years) living in the United Kingdom. Parent-child relationships of adopted adolescents in a psychiatric hospital.

This study compared the parent-child relationships of 140 adopted and non-adopted adolescents treated in a psychiatric hospital through examination of information contained in the adolescents' medical records. Specifically, comparisons were made of the mention of parental contribution to the problems precipitating hospitalization, psychiatric restriction of parental visits to hospitalized offspring, and referral of parents to an adjunct parents' group. Data were gathered by uninformed research assistants, from the hospital charts of adolescents who had already been discharged from the hospital

[Differential diagnostic correlations of sleep and attention disorders in childhood--comorbid psychological and organic illnesses].

Sleep disorders in childhood are a common phenomenon. A highly differenciated diagnostic effort is required as sleep in children is extremely variable between individuals, undergoes a constant natural development and depends of cultural influences on sleep behavior. The pathogenesis is predominantly due to environmental variables, especially to the child-parent interaction. Besides somatic diseases, as Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, Restless legs syndrome and nocturnal seizures play an etiologic role. Psychological and somatic factors in the development of sleep disorders have in common th

Investigating the links between parent-child interactions and context-specific electroencephalography asymmetry: Neurophysiology behind a frustrating task.

This study investigated the relations between parent-child interactions and infant brain activity in the context of a frustration eliciting task. Specifically, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded and processed to provide alpha frontal asymmetry indicators linked with approach/avoidance emotions and motivation. These data were collected from 53 mother-infant dyads during baseline and a toy retraction task, with play interactions coded for caregiving quality indicators. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses indicated that infants of more sensitive/responsive mothers and th

Psychobiological influences on maternal sensitivity in the context of adversity.

This study evaluated prospective longitudinal relations among an index of poverty-related cumulative risk, maternal salivary cortisol, child negative affect, and maternal sensitivity across the first 2 postpartum years. Participants included 1,180 biological mothers residing in rural and predominantly low-income communities in the United States. Multilevel growth curve analyses indicated that an index of cumulative risk was positively associated with maternal cortisol across the postpartum (study visits occurring at approximately 7, 15, and 24 months postpartum) over and above effects for Afri

After a childhood with a parent in prison - relationships and well-being as a child and young adult.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore whether young adults who had a parent in prison while growing up in Sweden are disadvantaged in terms of parental support, school well-being and functioning, and socioemotional and/or behavioral problems, compared to young adults whose parents were not in prison when they were a child. Design/methodology/approach Retrospective self-report information about parental imprisonment and childhood and adulthood welfare was collected from 2,500 Swedish young adults as part of the RESUME project. Of these, 52 who had had a parent in prison during their c

Developmental Relations Between Internalising Problems and ADHD in Childhood: a Symptom Level Perspective.

ADHD and internalising problems commonly co-occur with up to 50% of children diagnosed with ADHD also suffering from anxiety or depression. However, their developmental relations are currently not well understood. Longitudinal symptom level analyses can provide valuable insights into how difficulties in these areas of psychosocial functioning affect each other. Using Gaussian Graphical Models and Graphical Vector Autoregression Models, this study estimated cross-sectional and longitudinal networks of ADHD and internalising symptoms in 1387 children using parent- and teacher-reported Social Beh

Long-term follow-up of paediatric anorectal anomalies and the role and efficacy of parent support groups for such conditions.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: There are a multitude of parent support groups for most life situations and medical conditions. The aim of this study was to discover defining characteristics and to evaluate the structure and effectiveness of parent support groups in paediatric anorectal anomalies. METHODS: Over 200 non-profit organisations and parent support groups were sent questionnaires to determine their effectiveness. Many of these were excluded as they were deemed not relevant to the final study. A final 20 groups were included for review, questions were based around origins, activities, education

Transactional relations between maternal anxiety and toddler anxiety risk through toddler-solicited comforting behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Transactional developmental and anxiety theories suggest that mothers and toddlers may influence each other's anxiety development across early childhood. Further, toddlers' successful solicitations of comfort during uncertain, yet manageable, situations, may be a behavioral mechanism by which mothers and toddlers impact each other over time. To test these ideas, the current study employed a longitudinal design to investigate bidirectional relations between maternal anxiety and toddler anxiety risk (observed inhibited temperament and mother-perceived anxiety, analyzed separately),

Mothers' assessments of the impact of children with spina bifida on the family.

This exploratory, descriptive study examined mothers' assessments of the impact of children with spina bifida on the family. A review of the literature indicated that families can be conceptualized as systems and that the impact of a child with spina bifida is experienced throughout the system. The subjects were a convenience sample of ten mothers of children ages 5 to 11 with spina bifida. Three instruments were used to collect data. The Child Health History and Demographic Questionnaire; the Impact on Family Scale (Stein & Riessman, 1980); and the Parent Concern Questionnaire. The instrument

Children's emotion understanding and attachment security to mothers and fathers across the transition to siblinghood.

The transition to siblinghood represents a period of adjustment for parents and firstborn children, influencing child-parent attachment relationships and children's emotional development. This study examined the longitudinal bidirectional relations between firstborn children's emotion understanding and their attachment security to their mothers and fathers during this transition. Firstborn children (N = 230, 55% girls/45% boys, 86% White, 5% Black, 3% Asian, 4% Latinx, and Mage = 29.75 months) completed the Emotion Understanding in Early Childhood scale, and both mothers and fathers completed
