The character of parietal and orbital alterations in the superfamily Hominoidea (families Hominidae [exclusive of Homo] and Hylobotidae).

Parietal external surface disruption routinely referred to as porotic hyperostosis, and orbital alterations (cribra orbitalia), have been attributed to anemia-related bone marrow hyperplasia in humans. A recent study in humans identified that they were actually vascular in nature. Skeletons were examined and epi-illumination surface microscopy was performed on the parietal region and orbit of 156 Hominidae and 123 Hylobotidae to assess if these phenomena were trans-phylogenetic. Trans-cortical channels were recognized on the basis of visualized ectocranial surface defects penetrating the parie

Craniolacunia and the Development of the Fetal Calvaria: An Autopsy Series With Clinical and Histological Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Craniolacunia, also known as lückenschädel, is a congenital abnormality of the calvaria featuring well-circumscribed areas of marked thinning, interspersed with more-normal bone. It is most commonly associated with myelomeningocele and/or Chiari 2 malformation. METHODS: Records, photographs, and histologic sections were reviewed from 13 autopsy cases with craniolacunia. To investigate normal calvarial development, 23 parietal bone samples from fetuses/infants of 16-42 weeks gestation were examined. RESULTS: Parietal bone development had reproducible morphologic stages. Bone thick

Cranial bone structure in children with sagittal craniosynostosis: Relationship with surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While spring-assisted cranioplasty has become a widespread technique to correct scaphocephaly in children with sagittal synostosis, predicting head shape changes induced by the gradual opening of the springs remains challenging. This study aimed to explore the role of cranial bone structure on surgical outcomes. METHODS: Patients with isolated sagittal synostosis undergoing spring-assisted cranioplasty at GOSH (London, UK) were recruited (n = 18, age: 3-8 months). Surgical outcome was assessed by the change in cephalic index measured on 3D head scans acquired before spring inserti

[Congenital cutaneous aplasia of the scalp. Apropos of 4 cases].

Report of four cases of congenital defects of the scalp. In two of these cases, the skin defect was associated with a skull defect and in one, there were other cranial deformities. In each case, the lesion seemed isolated in otherwise normal children. This study contains a review of congenital scalp defects. The different aspects of this rare disease are presented and the treatment is discussed with reference to natural evolution. The authors differentiate between cases with isolated lesion and cases with associated malformations or abnormalities, malformation syndromes, as has been previously

A novel ciliopathic skull defect arising from excess neural crest.

The skull is essential for protecting the brain from damage, and birth defects involving disorganization of skull bones are common. However, the developmental trajectories and molecular etiologies by which many craniofacial phenotypes arise remain poorly understood. Here, we report a novel skull defect in ciliopathic Fuz mutant mice in which only a single bone pair encases the forebrain, instead of the usual paired frontal and parietal bones. Through genetic lineage analysis, we show that this defect stems from a massive expansion of the neural crest-derived frontal bone. This expansion occurs

Amphibian skull evolution: the developmental and functional context of simplification, bone loss and heterotopy.

Despite their divergent morphology, extant and extinct amphibians share numerous features in the timing and spatial patterning of dermal skull elements. Here, I show how the study of these features leads to a deeper understanding of morphological evolution. Batrachians (salamanders and frogs) have simplified skulls, with dermal bones appearing rudimentary compared with fossil tetrapods, and open cheeks resulting from the absence of other bones. The batrachian skull bones may be derived from those of temnospondyls by truncation of the developmental trajectory. The squamosal, quadratojugal, pari

Aneurysmal bone cyst associated with fibrous dysplasia of the skull.

A 25 year old patient presented with a post-traumatic soft tissue swelling of the occiput, overlying an area of bone expansion and destruction. At operation an aneurysmal bone cyst was found. 11 years previously a similar parietal lesion had been found in conjunction with fibrous dysplasia. The differential diagnosis and treatment of this entity is discussed.

Three-dimensional changes in the craniofacial complex associated with soft-diet feeding.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The masticatory force affects craniofacial development. We aimed to quantify the topological deviation of the growing craniofacial structure due to soft-food diet feeding and to map the region where the phenotypes appeared on three-dimensional (3D) images. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Mice were fed a powdered soft diet (SD) or conventional hard diet (HD) of regular rodent pellets at 3 weeks of age until 9 weeks of age. The heads, excluding the mandibles, were scanned by micro-computed tomography. The topographic deviation of the bony surface was quantitatively assessed by

Healing of membranous and long bone defects. An experimental study in growing rabbits.

Different isolation models have been used for qualitative and quantitative studies on the individual roles of periosteum, cortical bone, endosteum and bone marrow in the repair of long bone defects. Corresponding skull defects were studied to evaluate also the dural osteogenetic capacity. A total of 53 operations were performed on the tibia and skull of 33 growing rabbits. The animals were killed 10-12 weeks after surgery. Ordinary rough histological methods were used for studying bone formation, and quantitative estimates were made using serial sections. The cortex, endosteum and bone marrow

Embryonic Development and Cranial Ossification Sequence in Two Heremites Species (Squamata: Scincidae).

Although embryological studies of squamates have a long history, most groups in this large clade remain poorly studied. One such group is the family Scincidae, which consists of morphologically and ecologically diverse lizards. In this study, we describe several stages of embryonic development based on cleared and stained specimens of Heremites auratus and Heremites vittatus. Our analysis indicates that the pterygoid and frontal are the first bones to be ossified at stage 34 in the skull of H. auratus. At stage 37, which was examined in both studied species, the ossified bones include the nasa

Biomechanical comparison of calcium phosphate cements for split cranial bone graft donor sites.

BACKGROUND: Although harvesting of in situ split cranial bone is a well-established technique, few data have been generated regarding the biomechanical effect of bone harvest on the cranial bone donor site, and even fewer data have been generated regarding the biomechanical effect of calcium phosphate bone cement inlay on the donor site. The authors documented the weakening of the skull at the in situ cranial harvest site and determined the benefit, if any, when the site is inlayed with calcium phosphate cements. METHODS: Cadaver skulls were divided into three groups: group 1, an in situ cran

Accessory Cranial Suture Leading to Abnormal Head Shape.

Accessory cranial sutures have been described in the literature and are most commonly associated with the parietal bone. These sutures are typically identified incidentally and there have been no reported cases of accessory cranial sutures leading to abnormal head shape. The authors present the case of a 3-month-old patient with multiple congenital anomalies and an accessory parietal suture leading to abnormal head shape. The patient was successfully treated with cranial orthotic therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an accessory cranial suture leading to abnormal head s

Temporal osteocutaneous island flaps for complete reconstruction of cleft palate defects.

In each of four patients, closure of a wide cleft palate was performed with a temporal osteocutaneous island flap (TOCI flap) based on the superficial temporal artery. These were fabricated island fasciocutaneous flaps composed of temporoparietalis fascia and galea with pericranium, surfaced with split skin grafts. Two flaps carried with them a segment of vascularized parietal bone (TOCI-I). In the other two flaps, the osseus component was supplied by placing an osteogenic powder in a pericranial pocket: a temporal artery "osteogenic" cutaneous flap (TOCI-II). In each case the flap closed the

Penetrating skull injury with six inch fence rod.

In this study we are describing an unusual case of the boundary fence (6 inch long) penetrating through the skull vault and lodging into the middle cranial fossa. A 10 years old male child fell onto his house fence while playing on the terrace. The metal fence penetrated through the scalp, parietal bone, midbrain and the midface, fracturing the parietal and the midfacial bones. CT-scans were obtained to view the trajectory and the position of the fence. The amount of midbrain injury was also accessed. The degree of morbidity vis-à-vis the type of injury was surprisingly low. Safe access to the

[An intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the skull in infancy: case report].

An intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the skull in infancy is rare. We report a case of a 7-month-old girl with an intradiploic epidermoid cyst of the left parietal bone. The patient was admitted to the department of pediatrics in, our hospital in March, 2000, complaining of a lump in the scalp with a diameter of 1.5 cm. The pediatrician doubted that it was a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). In addition, as a result of further tests there were no systemic findings to suggest LCH. The skull x-ray showed round radiolucency of the left parietal bone. CT scans showed an iso density intrad

Occipitoparietal benign osteoblastoma: should entire lesion be resected when magnetic resonance images reveal wide abnormal signal intensity in surrounding bone marrow?

BACKGROUND: Benign osteoblastoma is an uncommon primary bone tumor that usually affects long bones and the vertebral column. Its occurrence in the calvarium is rare. Despite the characteristically benign nomenclature of osteoblastoma, it sometimes recurs with the possibility of transforming into a malignant form after an incomplete resection. Therefore, radical resection is recommended whenever possible. However, it has not been clarified whether the adjacent bones should also be completely resected when magnetic resonance (MR) images reveal abnormal signal intensity in the bone marrow. CASE

Full-Mouth Rehabilitation with Calvarium Bone Grafts and Dental Implants for a Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome Patient: Case Report.

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of keratinization associated with palmoplantar keratoderma and severe periodontitis resulting in complete edentulism in late adolescence. The pathognomonic dental features of PLS are pathologic migration, hypermobility, and exfoliation of the teeth without any signs of root resorption. It has been suggested that an effective way to treat PLS patients presenting early in the disease progression is extraction of the erupted primary dentition or hopeless permanent teeth followed by antibiotic coverage with periodontal therapy

Late-onset idiopathic hypoparathyroidism with thymoma: a case report.

A 62-year-old male was admitted because of numbness and twitching of both hands. Hypocalcemia with positive Trousseau's sign was noted. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) showed an anterior mediastinal mass. Skull X-ray and whole body bone scan could not rule out bony metastasis to the left parietal bone, causing an anterior mediastinal tumor with bony metastasis to be suspected initially. Median sternotomy and extended thymectomy were done, and Stage II thymoma with negative calcitonin staining was noted. However, hypocalcemia persisted after thymectomy and the results of pre-operative
