Acute Paronychia and Onychomadesis after a "Russian" Manicure: A New, Aggressive, and Destructive Form of Manicure for Dermatologists to Recognize.

INTRODUCTION: Cuticle reduction and removal techniques are commonly performed by nail technicians for nail cosmesis. However, manipulation of the nail cuticle can lead to localized infection and nail dystrophy. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, a 20-year-old woman from the Philadelphia area in the USA presented with onychomadesis secondary to acute paronychia following a "Russian" manicure. In this technique, an electronic filer is used to completely remove the cuticle, leaving the proximal nail fold exposed and vulnerable. CONCLUSION: As this style of manicure is being inaccurately publicize

Development of Periungual Pyogenic Granuloma with Associated Paronychia Following Isotretinoin Therapy: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

The development of periungual pyogenic granulomas while taking the oral acne drug isotretinoin is a known yet uncommon and potentially severe side effect of the oral vitamin A derivative. Previous reports have detailed the development of pyogenic granulomas most commonly arising at sites of previous acne lesions as well as both subungual and periungual locations, with associated paronychia, bleeding, and discomfort. This is thought to arise as a result of the nail bed's fragility and propensity toward spicule formation brought on by the proliferative action of isotretinoin. Here, we report a c

Successful Treatment of MEK Inhibitor-Induced Paronychia in Neurofibromatosis with Photodynamic Therapy: A Case Report and Review of the Therapeutic Options.

Background/Objectives: Selumetinib, a MEK1/2 inhibitor, is commonly used for treating neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and is associated with cutaneous side effects such as paronychia and periungual granulomas. These complications can be painful and difficult to manage, often leading to the discontinuation of treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a novel treatment for MEKi-induced paronychia in a patient with NF1. Methods: We present a case report of an 18-year-old patient with NF1 who developed painful periungual granulomas on

Using betaxolol for the prevention of paronychia induced by epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors: a case-control cohort study.

BACKGROUND: High rates of posttreatment discomfort, infection, recurrence, and increased time to return to work have been noted after nail plate avulsion resulting from epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor(EGFR-TKI)-induced paronychia, which may even interrupt the course of treatment for EGFR-TKI therapy. Thus, we conducted this study to determine how effectively a topical β-blocker, betaxolol, prevents EGFR-TKI-induced paronychia. METHODS: This case-control cohort study included a total of 131 non-small-cell lung cancer patients. The prevention group comprised 40 patien

Phenolic Compounds Analysis and In Vitro Biological Activities of Aqueous Extract From Leaves of Paronychia Arabica Collected in South Algeria.

The objective of this investigation was to assess the biological properties of the leaf's aqueous extract of Paronychia Arabica (PaAE), which is used in conventional medicine for therapeutic purposes of gastric ulcers and abdominal diseases. The content of phenolic and flavonoidic compounds was quantitatively estimated using colorimetric methods. The phenolic component profile was also evaluated using LC-MS/MS. The biological activities were then carried out, namely the antioxidant activity (DPPH test, β-carotene bleaching and FRAP assays), the anti-inflammatory impact, and the inhibitory effe

[Successful treatment with silver nitrate chemical cauterization for paronychia and granulation in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia undergoing ibrutinib therapy].

A 72-year-old man with leukocytosis, anemia, and lymphadenopathy was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in August 2017 and was carefully monitored in a "watch-and-wait" manner until it became an "active disease." Ibrutinib (IBR) was initiated orally in July 2018 at a dose of 420 mg/day after disease progression due to chromosome 17p deletion (del 17p). The patient showed partial response after transient lymphocytosis while on IBR treatment. IBR induces paronychia and skin disorder due to the disruption of disulfide bonds between cysteine and inhibition of epidermal growth factor

A randomized phase 2 trial of the efficacy and safety of a novel topical povidone-iodine formulation for Cancer therapy-associated Paronychia.

Purpose Cancer therapy-associated paronychia (CAP) is a frequent adverse event associated with cytotoxic and targeted therapies that may impact dosing of anticancer therapies and patient quality of life (QoL). There are currently no evidence-based management strategies or approved treatments for CAP. Materials and Methods This was a prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled phase 2 study that evaluated the efficacy and safety of 6 to 8 weeks of 1% or 2% povidone-iodine (PVP-I) topical solution versus vehicle-control in adult patients with CAP. Higher frequency of paronychia (nail bed infections) in pediatric and adolescent patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus than in non-diabetic peers.

OBJECTIVE: Paronychia occurs frequently in adolescents, but there are no data about its prevalence in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). We investigated the presence and characteristics of nail-bed infections in a group of adolescent patients with DM1 aged 10-20 years. METHODS: Ninety-three children and adolescents with DM1 and 100 healthy age-matched controls were studied using a structured questionnaire. Frequency, duration and treatment of paronychia and, in the DM1 group, duration of DM, mean HbA1c, frequency of hypoglycemia, footwear and foot care were evaluated. All patien

Efficacy of topical beta-blockers in the management of EGFR-inhibitor induced paronychia and pyogenic granuloma-like lesions: case series and review of the literature.

Nail toxicities, such as paronychia and pyogenic granuloma-like lesions, are well-recognized side effects of epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor (EGFR-I) therapy that can significantly impair patient's quality of life and compliance to anticancer treatment. Numerous therapeutic options are available, with variable rates of success. Recently, topical β-blockers have emerged as a novel, non-invasive treatment strategy. We tested the effectiveness of topical timolol 0.5% gel, twice daily, under occlusion for 30 days, on paronychia and periungual pyogenic granuloma-like lesions in 9 patient
