Desmoplastic fibroblastoma presenting as a parotid tumour: a case report and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic fibroblastomas (DFs) are rare fibrous soft tissue tumours that usually arise in subcutaneous tissue or skeletal muscle in a variety of anatomical sites. These lesions most frequently present as painless, slow-growing mobile masses. A case of DF is described in a 47-year-old man who presented with a painless right parotid mass of 2 months duration. At surgery, the lesion was attached to the tail of the right parotid gland. Histopathological examination demonstrated a fibrous lesion comprising spindled and stellate shaped fibroblasts with focal myxoid stromal change. The features we

Bilateral epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid glands.

BACKGROUND: The most common histological diagnosis of bilateral parotid gland neoplasm is Warthin tumor. Bilateral malignant tumors of the parotid gland are extremely rare. METHODS: A 60-year-old man presented with a painless mass in the right preauricular area and an MRI scan showed multiple masses in the parotid glands, bilaterally. A standard superficial parotidectomy was performed on the right parotid gland followed by subtotal parotidectomy on the left. The diagnosis was synchronous bilateral epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma arising in the parotid glands. RESULTS: Histopathology of th

Comparative Role of Matrixins in Diagnostics of Parotid Gland Tumors.

The benign and malignant neoplasms in parotid gland have similar clinical presentations despite different tumor growth rates. The study compared the clinical and morphological data as well as the results of ELISA for MMP-2, MMP-8, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 in salivary fluid yielded during primary examination of the patients with pleomorphic adenoma and adenocarcinoma of parotid gland. The examined biomarkers detected in salivary fluid in patients with various cancer types differed significantly (p≤0.05). The correlations between clinical identification of adenoma or adenocarcinoma, on the one

Patient and tumor characteristics predictive of primary parotid gland malignancy: A 20-year experience at the University of Wisconsin.

PURPOSE: To identify patient and tumor characteristics predictive of primary parotid malignancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records were reviewed for patients who underwent parotidectomy at the University of Wisconsin from 1994 to 2013. Patients with primary parotid neoplasms were separated into benign or malignant subgroups. A multivariate logistic regression model was employed to compare categorical (gender, lesion side, nature of presentation, recurrence) and numerical variables (age, tumor size) between the benign and malignant groups. Mean BMI was compared between the groups by univariate an

Familial occurrence of acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland.

We report the familial occurrence of acinic cell carcinoma involving the parotid gland, the first such report of which we are aware. The familial occurrence of any salivary gland neoplasm is rare. Several reports are present in the literature, including pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin tumor, carcinoma of the submandibular gland, and malignant lymphoepithelial lesion. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who underwent excision of a left parotid gland acinic cell carcinoma. Eight years later, his daughter presented at the age of 16 years with a nontender parotid gland mass that was excised and f

Bilateral Parotid Tuberculous Lymphadenitis Mimicking Warthin Tumor in an Elderly Male: A Case Report.

Tuberculosis involving the parotid lymph nodes is rare and can clinically and radiologically mimic benign neoplasms such as Warthin tumor, particularly when bilateral. We present the case of a 72-year-old male with bilateral parotid swellings, initially suspected to be Warthin tumors based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings showing well-defined, cystic lesions with focal solid components and central necrosis. Histopathological examination following ultrasound-guided biopsy revealed caseating granulomas consistent with tuberculous lymphadenitis. This case highlights the importance of

Bilateral multinodular oncocytomas of the parotid arising in a background of bilateral oncocytic nodular hyperplasia.

Oncocytic tumors of the major salivary glands are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. When they do occur, these neoplasms typically present as solitary nodules that affect only one major salivary gland, usually the parotid. Multiple bilateral multinodular tumors are rare. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman with a case of synchronous multiple bilateral multinodular oncocytomas that arose in a background of bilateral oncocytic nodular hyperplasia in the parotid glands. The patient underwent superficial parotid resections, and at the 4-year follow-up, she exhibi

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Accessory Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

The accessory parotid gland is salivary gland tissue separated from the main gland at a variable distance. This gland is histologically similar to the main gland, but has a higher incidence of malignant neoplasms than the main gland. Regarding the various malignant neoplasms, studies have shown higher incidences of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, with less than 2% being adenoid cystic carcinoma. We present a case of swelling in the midcheek region that, after clinical examination, was diagnosed as a case of neoplasm of the accessory parotid gland. On the basis of auxiliary investigations including i

Do Not Ignore Tuberculosis of the Parotid Gland When Meeting Obvious Infiltration of Neutrophils in a Suspicious Swelling by FNAC.

Parotid gland tuberculosis constantly results in unnecessary medical examinations and surgery because of its similarities in the presentation to neoplasms of the parotid gland. Although parotid gland involvement is extremely rare even in tuberculosis-endemic countries, accurate diagnosis of this clinical entity is of great significance because tuberculous parotitis can be successfully treated medically without surgical therapy. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and molecular identification of the parotid swellings are efficient in making a rapid diagnosis. Herein, we report an early misdi

Salivary gland neoplasms: a 21year review of cases seen at University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The present study updates the experience of salivary gland tumours in Ibadan. All cases of benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms histologically diagnosed between 1975 and 1995 in the Oral Pathology Department and Cancer Registry of the University College Hospital, Ibadan were reviewed. Salivary gland neoplasms accounted for 3.5% of head and neck neoplasms, the majority (46.5%) occurring in the parotid, followed by the submandibular (18.1%) and palatal glands (10.7%). The ratio of benign to malignant neoplasms was 1.1 to 1. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma were the

[DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTICS AND FEATURES OF THE CLINICAL COURSE OF TUMORS OF THE PAROTID SALIVARY GLANDS].

The purpose of the research is to clarify the diagnostic value of the ultrasound examination method in the diagnosis of tumors of the parotid gland. A clinical examination of 389 patients with tumors and tumor-like neoplasms of the parotid gland was performed. Based on the clinical examination of patients with tumors of the parotid glands, it can be concluded that the ultrasound examination method is highly informative and allows you to study in detail the structure of the tumor and the surrounding soft tissues, which significantly increases its diagnostic value. The use of a comprehensive dia

Mucoepidermoid microcarcinoma in the context of parotid gland cyst.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a type of salivary gland cancer that can develop in the context of a parotid gland cyst. This type of tumor is composed of mucous, epidermoid, and intercalated cells, and usually presents as a slow-growing and painless mass. A parotid gland cyst is a condition in which a fluid-filled sac forms in the parotid gland. The tumor can be masked as it develops within the parotid cyst. A 45-year-old female patient presented with a suspect of benign neoplasm of the major salivary gland. She underwent partial right parotidectomy, which upon pathological analysis confirmed the

Multiparametric ultrasound evaluation of parotid gland tumors: B-mode and color Doppler in comparison and in combination with contrast-enhanced ultrasound and elastography. A case report of a misleading diagnosis.

Preoperative characterization of parotid gland tumors using imaging or cytological examination (fine-needle aspiration cytology) has a strong clinical and therapeutic impact, but it is often difficult due to the tumors' histological heterogeneity. The recent introduction of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and elastography, in the context of multiparametric ultrasound evaluation, contributed to improving the preoperative diagnosis of many diseases affecting the liver, breast, and thyroid, as well as other organs. However, limited evidence is available on the use and the diagnostic power of

Follicular Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare tumor, with only six cases reported in the literature. A 51-year-old female had a 3.0 cm tumor resected from the right parotid gland. The tumor exhibited solid sheets, whorls, fascicular pattern, and syncytium appearance with an indistinct cell border. The lymphocytic infiltrate was sprinkled throughout the neoplasm, with focal prominent perivascular cuffing. Immunohistochemically, it was positive for follicular dendritic cell markers CD21, CD23, and CD35. We aim to enhance the understanding of this neoplasm and alert

Osteoclast-like giant cell tumor of the parotid gland; a case report with literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The osteoclast-like giant cell is a benign tumor that presents as either an isolated benign tumor or one with a carcinomatous component. This study aims to report a rare case of osteoclast-like giant cell tumor (GCT) of the parotid gland. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old female presented with a painless left pre-auricular swelling of 2-month duration which increased in size gradually over that period. On examination, there was a firm, mobile mass with well-defined borders in the left parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed a giant cell-rich lesion that was highly cellula

Brain metastasis of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

We present an extremely infrequent case of brain metastasis of a parotid tumor. To our knowledge, this is the second case reported of a brain metastasis of a malignant parotid tumor, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. Pleomorphic adenoma represents 60% of tumors of the parotid gland, and although it is a benign tumor, it can transform into carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in 5% of cases, one of the most aggressive neoplasms of the salivary glands. We want to note the need for an accurate diagnostic. Thanks to aggressive surgical management, our patient survived more than 1½ years.

Synchronous parotid tumors of different histological types in association with metastasizing hypopharyngeal carcinoma.

At operation for metastasizing carcinoma of the piriform sinus a patient was found to have two separate parotid tumors, one a pleomorphic adenoma and the other a papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (Warthin's tumor). These tumors presented as palpable masses on the same side as a lymph node involved with carcinoma. Synchronous parotid tumors of different types are rare; previous reports in the literature show that this combination of pleomorphic adenoma and Warthin's tumor is the most common. We have found no previous report of multiple parotid neoplasms in a patient with coexistent squamous c

Extracapsular dissection of benign parotid tumors using a retroauricular hairline incision approach.

Extracapsular dissection has emerged as a more conservative approach to parotid surgery. The parotid surgery commonly begins with a modified Blair or facelift incision. Although minor, the incision scar from these incisions is visible on the face and neck. I initially developed a retroauricular hairline incision (RAHI) for the removal of benign lesions in the upper neck with a more esthetic look. The RAHI approach also may be used for selected patients with benign parotid neoplasms. Mobile benign tumors arising in the inferior superficial part of the parotid gland may be removed by the RAHI ap

Spontaneous intra-parotid pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery: A rare case report due to an unfrequent disease.

Spontaneous intra-parotid pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery are very rare, only one case has been reported in the literature until 2019. The authors describe the second rare case of a spontaneous pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery which mimicked a parotid neoplasm in a young patient with pulsatile and non-fixed mass. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of this condition are discussed. We report a new etiology of this rare entity that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an atypical parotid mass.

Parotid incidentaloma detected during thoracic PET imaging: how should these lesions be managed?

Preoperative positron emission tomography (PET) scanning of three patients with lung cancer revealed increased unilateral focal activity in a parotid gland. Further investigation with ultrasound and core biopsy confirmed benign parotid neoplasm in all three cases. The phenomenon of imaging-related incidentaloma is increasingly recognized and further investigation of these lesions remains controversial. This article discusses PET incidentaloma in the parotid, why tracer uptake may occur and how these lesions may be managed with changes in patient management that ensue.
