Synergistic Effects of Particle Size and Molecular Weight on Chain Entanglements in Single-Polymer Nanoparticles.

The polymer dynamics at the nanoscale exhibit significant deviations from their bulk materials, affecting both our fundamental understanding and practical applications of polymers. Despite growing applications and synthesis advancements of 3-dimensional confined polymeric nanomaterials, comprehensive studies of their dynamics remain scarce, mainly due to a lack of suitable characterization techniques. In this study, we employed temperature-controllable dark-field microscopy to visualize the thermally activated segmental and whole-chain motions of individual polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs), a

Particle size-dependent efficiency and mechanistic insights of nose-to-brain delivery bypassing the BBB.

Central nervous system (CNS) diseases remain a therapeutic challenge due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The nose-to-brain pathway offers a promising non-invasive route to bypass the BBB, yet the impact of nanocarrier size on this multi-stage delivery process is poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the role of particle size using solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNS) of 80, 120, 240, 360, and 480 nm, formulated into nasal sprays. In vivo imaging in mice revealed a non-monotonic relationship, with 240 nm SLNS (SLNS3) achieving peak brain accumulation via both olfactory and tri

Impact of Bone Particle Size on Alveolar Ridge Preservation in Periodontally Compromised Molar Extraction Sites.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The clinical efficacy of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is well-documented in the literature. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding ARP in the posterior area and in periodontally compromised sites. There is no clinical decision-making guideline on the choice of bone substitute particle size for ARP in periodontally compromised molar sockets. This study aimed to compare the radiographic outcomes and implant feasibility of two deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) particle sizes for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in periodontally compromised molar extract

Impact of particle size and oxide phase on microplastic transport through iron oxide-coated sand.

The presence of microplastics in aquatic environments threatens the ecological system and human health. This study investigates the transport and retention of polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) in clean sand, and hematite-, goethite-, and magnetite-coated iron oxide - sands as a function of size ratio and ionic strength. The breakthrough curves (BTCs), retention profiles, and hydraulic pressure were measured through soil-column experiments, and the retention of PSMPs was assessed from the observed BTCs, RPs and first-order attachment coefficients. In addition, the maximum attachment capacity wa

Chemoselectivity Inversion of Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Particle Size Tuning in the Micrometer Regime.

Gated adsorption is one of the unique physical properties of flexible metal-organic frameworks with high application potential in selective adsorption and sensing of molecules. Despite recent studies that have provided some guidelines in understanding and designing structural flexibility for controlling gate opening by chemical modification of the secondary building units, currently, there is no established strategy to design a flexible MOF showing selective gated adsorption for a specific guest molecule. In a present contribution it is demonstrated for the first time, that the selectivity in

Dynamic Light Scattering Analysis for the Determination of the Particle Size of Iron-Carbohydrate Complexes.

Intravenously administered iron-carbohydrate nanoparticle complexes are widely used to treat iron deficiency. This class includes several structurally heterogeneous nanoparticle complexes, which exhibit varying sensitivity to the conditions required for the methodologies available to physicochemically characterize these agents. Currently, the critical quality attributes of iron-carbohydrate complexes have not been fully established. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) has emerged as a fundamental method to determine intact particle size and distribution. However, challenges still remain regarding t

Implications of particle size on the respective solid-state properties of naltrexone in PLGA microparticles.

A thorough understanding of the complexities in formulating and manufacturing polymeric microspheres is required for new and generic drug applications. Specifically, for an ANDA application for polymeric microsphere-based products, the applicant must meet Q1 (qualitative) and Q2 (quantitative) sameness, and in some cases, Q3 (e.g., microstructural) sameness. Herein, we report the naltrexone crystallinity in a PLGA microparticle system prepared from a dichloromethane-benzyl alcohol solvent system results in a crystallinity dependence as a function of microparticle size from the same batch - ill

Volcano-type correlation between particle size and catalytic activity on hydrodechlorination catalyzed by AuPd nanoalloy.

Although changing the size of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is a reasonable way to tune and/or enhance their catalytic activity, size-selective preparation of NPs possessing random-alloy morphology has been challenging because of the differences in the ionization potential of each metal ion. This study demonstrates a time-controlled aggregation-stabilization method for the size-selective preparation of random alloy NPs composed of Au and Pd, which are stabilized by poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). By adjusting the mixing time in the presence of a small amount of PVP, aggregation was induced to p

Jejunal absorption of aprepitant from nanosuspensions: Role of particle size, prandial state and mucus layer.

The number of highly lipophilic active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in pharmaceutical development has been constantly increasing over recent decades. These APIs often have inherent issues with solubility and dissolution, limiting their oral bioavailability. Traditionally, a reduction in particle size to the micrometer range has been used to improve dissolution. More recently, size reduction to the nanometer range has been introduced, which further increases the dissolution rate, but may also involve other mechanisms for increasing bioavailability. The effect of particle size on the absorp

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, size, particle number, and residual vascular risk after potent statin therapy.

BACKGROUND: Chemically measured high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) may not be the best clinical measure of HDL. Little is known about alternative HDL measures such as HDL size or particle number (HDL-P) as determinants of residual risk after potent statin therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: In Justification for the Use of statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER), HDL size and HDL-P were measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and HDL-C and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) were chemically assayed in 10 886 participants without cardiovascular di

Source apportionment of ambient fine particle size distribution using positive matrix factorization in Erfurt, Germany.

Particle size distribution data collected between September 1997 and August 2001 in Erfurt, Germany were used to investigate the sources of ambient particulate matter by positive matrix factorization (PMF). A total of 29,313 hourly averaged particle size distribution measurements covering the size range of 0.01 to 3.0 microm were included in the analysis. The particle number concentrations (cm(-3)) for the 9 channels in the ultrafine range, and mass concentrations (ng m(-3)) for the 41 size bins in the accumulation mode and particle up to 3 microm in aerodynamic diameter were used in the PMF.

Investigation of hypromellose particle size effects on drug release from sustained release hydrophilic matrix tablets.

Selected combinations of six model drugs and four hypromellose (USP 2208) viscosity grades were studied utilizing direct compression and in vitro dissolution testing. Experimental HPMC samples with differing particle size distributions (coarse, fine, narrow, bimodal) were generated by sieving. For some formulations, the impact of HPMC particle size changes was characterized by faster drug release and an apparent shift in drug release mechanism when less than 50% of the HPMC passed through a 230 mesh (63 microm) screen. Within the ranges studied, drug release from other formulations appeared to

Effect of particle size on hydroxyapatite crystal-induced tumor necrosis factor alpha secretion by macrophages.

Macrophages may promote a vicious cycle of inflammation and calcification in the vessel wall by ingesting neointimal calcific deposits (predominantly hydroxyapatite) and secreting tumor necrosis factor (TNF)alpha, itself a vascular calcifying agent. Here we have investigated whether particle size affects the proinflammatory potential of hydroxyapatite crystals in vitro and whether the nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB pathway plays a role in the macrophage TNFalpha response. The particle size and nano-topography of nine different crystal preparations was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrosc

The effect of corn silage particle size and cottonseed hulls on cows in early lactation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of reducing forage particle length (FPL) and the inclusion of cottonseed hulls (CSH) on intake, digestibility, chewing activity, and milk production of cows in early lactation. Sixteen multiparous cows averaging 17 +/- 3 d in milk and 677 +/- 58 kg BW were assigned to one of four 4 x 4 Latin squares. One square contained ruminally cannulated cows to evaluate effects of treatment on rumen fermentation and function. During each of the 23-d periods, cows were offered one of four total mixed rations that differed in particle length (long or s

Effect of fiber content and particle size of alfalfa silage on performance and chewing behavior.

A low NDF drought-stressed 1988 alfalfa silage (32.6% NDF) and a higher fiber 1988 alfalfa silage (46.4% NDF) were fed to lactating cows to evaluate effects on feed intake, fat test, and chewing behavior. Two groups of Holstein cows, 16 primiparous housed in tie stalls and 16 multiparous in free stalls, were assigned to diets based on parity and milk yield. The low NDF silage was fed for 6 wk in a TMR with 21.5% NDF and was compared with a TMR with 31.9% NDF. During an additional 4-wk period, one-half of each dietary group was fed a ration in which one-half of each silage was rechopped to redu

Size-Dependent Neurotoxicity of Aluminum Oxide Particles: a Comparison Between Nano- and Micrometer Size on the Basis of Mitochondrial Oxidative Damage.

Aluminum nanoparticles (AlNPs) are among the most abundantly produced nanosized particles in the market. There is limited information about the potential harmful effects of aluminum oxide due to its particle size on human health. Considering the toxic effects of Al on brain as its target tissue, in this study, the toxicity of nanoparticles, microparticles, and ionic forms of Al on rat brain and isolated mitochondria was evaluated. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into ten groups (six rats each), in which group I was the control, and the other groups were administered different doses of Al n

Nano-size tantalum particles suppress the osteogenic activity of osteoblasts and stimulate osteoclasts.

BACKGROUND: Tantalum (Ta) and its derivatives are inert, possess mechanical qualities such as corrosion resistance, and are biocompatible. They also offer structural support during surgical correction, such as bone grafts during surgery, in instances of dental or skeletal disabilities. However, various sizes of Ta particles could be expelled from the implant's surface due to mechanical stress and load-induced wear caused by micromotion between loose implant surfaces during usage. Therefore, the study examined the effects of nano (25 nm) and micro-sized Ta particles (10 μm and 40-50 μm) on oste
