[[Human parvovirus B19 and its clinical significance].

Human parvovirus B19 causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and aplastic crisis. In pregnancy, B19 may be transmitted on to the fetus resulting in hydrops fetalis. B19 is sometimes associated with thrombocytopenia and vasculitis. In immunocompromised patients, B19 may persist causing chronic infection. Several methods for detecting B19 virus or specific antibodies are now available. B19 infection does not usually require therapy. Efficacy of immunoglobulins in chronic B19 infection has been demonstrated.

Human parvovirus B19: historical and clinical review.

Human parvovirus B19 has been associated with disease only for the past few years. First isolated from sera obtained for studies on hepatitis B in 1975, it was not until 1981 that infection with this small, single-stranded DNA virus was related to aplastic crisis associated with hemolytic anemia. A nonspecific viral prodrome, the occurrence in family members, and epidemics of aplastic crisis suggested the infectious etiology. Human parvovirus infection has since been associated with arthritis, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), fetal death, and hydrops fetalis. Through the use of recently d

Molecular characterization of a novel Muscovy duck parvovirus isolate: evidence of recombination between classical MDPV and goose parvovirus strains.

BACKGROUND: Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) and Goose parvovirus (GPV) are important etiological agents for Muscovy duck parvoviral disease and Derzsy's disease, respectively; both of which can cause substantial economic losses in waterfowl industry. In contrast to GPV, the complete genomic sequence data of MDPV isolates are still limited and their phylogenetic relationships largely remain unknown. In this study, the entire genome of a pathogenic MDPV strain ZW, which was isolated from a deceased Muscovy duckling in 2006 in China, was cloned, sequenced, and compared with that of other classical

Two potential recombinant rabies vaccines expressing canine parvovirus virion protein 2 induce immunogenicity to canine parvovirus and rabies virus.

Both rabies virus (RABV) and canine parvovirus (CPV) cause lethal diseases in dogs. In this study, both high egg passage Flury (HEP-Flury) strains of RABV and recombinant RABV carrying double RABV glycoprotein (G) gene were used to express the CPV virion protein 2 (VP2) gene, and were designated rHEP-VP2 and, rHEP-dG-VP2 respectively. The two recombinant RABVs maintained optimal virus titration according to their viral growth kinetics assay compared with the parental strain HEP-Flury. Western blotting indicated that G protein and VP2 were expressed in vitro. The expression of VP2 in Crandell f

Prevalence of anti-parvovirus B19 IgG and IgM and parvovirus B19 viremia in pregnant women in an urban area of Northern Italy.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection in pregnancy is mostly asymptomatic, but can cause complications including abortion and fetal hydrops. Although its infection is ubiquitous, seroprevalence among pregnant women varies according to different geographical areas. Since seroprevalence data in Italy are limited, the prevalence of antibodies and DNA in pregnant women was evaluated retrospectively, correlating the clinical situation of mothers and newborns. One thousand eight hundred and ninety-three sequential sera were examined from pregnant women (60.8% in the first trimester, 16.6% in the second on

LwaCas13a protein- and crRNA-enabled RPA-CRISPR/Cas13a platform for rapid visual differentiation of goose parvovirus and novel goose parvovirus.

Waterfowl parvoviruses, including goose parvovirus and novel goose parvovirus, are highly transmissible pathogens that pose serious threats to flock health and the poultry industry. In this paper, we report a macromolecule-enabled recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)-CRISPR/Cas13a platform for the rapid, sensitive, and field-deployable visual detection of these viruses by, targeting VP3. Guided by crRNA, LwaCas13a specifically recognizes complementary target RNA and is activated to exert non-specific collateral cleavage activity, efficiently degrading nearby single-stranded RNAs. Persistent symptomatic parvovirus B19 infection with severe thrombocytopenia transmitted by red blood cell transfusion containing low parvovirus B19 DNA levels.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-mediated human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection is rare but often causes severe hematologic disorders. In Japan, routine blood donor screening for PVB19 antigen (detection sensitivity, 106.4 IU/mL) using a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) was introduced in 2008. However, there is no consensus on the minimal infectious dose of PVB19 permissible for red blood cells (RBCs). CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old man, who had received hemodialysis for diabetic nephropathy for 5 years, underwent an RBC transfusion for anemia caused by hemorrhagic enterocolitis. He developed

Prevalence of parvovirus B19 and parvovirus V9 DNA and antibodies in paired bone marrow and serum samples from healthy individuals.

Parvovirus B19 (hereafter referred to as B19) exhibits a marked tropism to human bone marrow (BM), and infection may lead to erythema infectiosum, arthropathy, hydrops fetalis, and various hematologic disorders. Recently, a distinct parvovirus isolate termed V9 with an unknown clinical spectrum was discovered. In contrast to the many studies of B19 serology and viremia, valid information on the frequency of B19 or V9 DNA in the BM of healthy individuals is limited. To develop a reference value, paired BM and serum samples from healthy subjects were tested for the presence of B19 and V9 DNA and

Development and Evaluation of NanoPCR for the Detection of Goose Parvovirus.

Gosling plague (GP) is an acute and hemorrhagic infectious disease caused by goose parvovirus (GPV). The goose industry suffers significant economic losses as a result of GP, which is found to be widespread worldwide, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Our group developed a novel technique for detecting GPV nanoparticle-assisted polymerase chain reaction (nanoPCR) and the characterization of its specificity and sensitivity. It was developed by using the traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nanoparticles. The findings of this study revealed that GPV nanoPCR products were 389

Tale of two viruses: parvovirus B19 and HIV.

We present a HIV-infected patient who developed severe anaemia due to chronic parvovirus B19 infection and subsequently had an unplanned pregnancy. This is in the context of poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and significant immunosuppression; there was a delay in diagnosis of chronic parvovirus infection due to attribution of anaemia to HIV. She received immunoglobulin therapy and effective antiretroviral therapy, with reduction in parvovirus load and improvement in anaemia. She was counselled regarding the need for monitoring in pregnancy due to risk of intrauterine infection. We revie

Identification and management of congenital parvovirus B19 infection.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection is well known for its mild, self-limiting clinical presentations in children, such as erythema infectiosum. Approximately 40% of women of childbearing age are susceptible to B19V infection. While maternal B19V infection usually has a good prognosis, B19V can cause severe fetal anaemia and pregnancy loss due to its ability to suppress erythroid progenitor cells. Non-invasive ultrasound monitoring for fetal anaemia is usually performed if maternal seroconversion occurs in the first 20 weeks of gestation, with amniocentesis for fetal infection reserved for those wh

Parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy-awareness and opportunities.

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a human pathogenic virus associated with a wide range of clinical conditions. In pregnancy, B19V poses a potential hazard to the fetus as crossing the placental barrier and infecting erythroid progenitor cells in bone marrow and liver, it blocks fetal erythropoiesis leading to profound anemia, hydrops and/or fetal death. The virus is not regarded as a teratogen, however more scientific awareness is emerging on mechanisms and consequences of intrauterine infection and possible sequelae in the neonatal development. Reliable diagnostic procedures and fetal management stra

Canine parvovirus in vaccinated dogs: a field study.

The authors report a field study that investigated the canine parvovirus (CPV) strains present in dogs that developed the disease after being vaccinated. Faecal samples of 78 dogs that have been vaccinated against CPV and later presented with clinical signs suspected of parvovirus infection were used. Fifty (64.1 per cent) samples tested positive by PCR for CPV. No CPV vaccine type was detected. The disease by CPV-2b occurred in older and female dogs when compared with that by CPV-2c. The clinical signs presented by infected dogs were similar when any of both variants were involved. In most ca
