Extension of the Avian Host Range of Collyriclosis in Europe.

We describe cases of collyriclosis in apodiform and passeriform birds in Portugal, Switzerland, and Germany. We extend the host range of Collyriculm faba to include apodiform birds ( Apus apus , Apus melba , and Apus pallidus ) and the passerine Sitta europaea (Eurasian Nuthatch). Infections varied in severity from an incidental finding to severe debilitation and death. The infection route remains unclear with the apparent absence from Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland of the first intermediate host of C. faba, the aquatic gastropod Bythinella austriaca, implying that other organisms might be

Experimental infection of North American birds with the New York 1999 strain of West Nile virus.

To evaluate transmission dynamics, we exposed 25 bird species to West Nile virus (WNV) by infectious mosquito bite. We monitored viremia titers, clinical outcome, WNV shedding (cloacal and oral), seroconversion, virus persistence in organs, and susceptibility to oral and contact transmission. Passeriform and charadriiform birds were more reservoir competent (a derivation of viremia data) than other species tested. The five most competent species were passerines: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), American Crow (Corvus brachy

First record of fatal Plasmodium relictum (GRW4) infection in a highly endangered Fatu Hiva monarch (Pomarea whitneyi) fledgling: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The Fatu Hiva monarch (Pomarea whitneyi) is a Critically Endangered (IUCN) passerine species restricted to a single island in French Polynesia, with fewer than 20 individuals remaining. In the Pacific region, avian malaria caused by Plasmodium relictum lineage GRW4 is a major conservation concern because it has been linked to severe population declines and extinctions in Hawai'i and poses a documented threat to endemic birds in New Zealand. CASE PRESENTATION: On 17 June 2022, a recently fledged juvenile Fatu Hiva Monarch (Pomarea whitneyi) was found dead in its natural habitat on

Morphological diversity in the honeyeater hyolingual apparatus and its relationship with nectarivory.

Honeyeaters (Aves, Meliphagidae) are a speciose clade of nectarivorous birds, and there is immense diversity in the degree to which different species within the family rely on nectar. Honeyeater tongues are commonly described as similar to a paintbrush, with this morphology being interpreted as an adaptation for increasing nectar extraction efficiency. However, there has been limited work documenting the degree of interspecific diversity in tongue morphology across the family or the extent to which such diversity correlates with dependance on nectar. This information is also lacking for the hy

Oh, snap! A within-wing sonation in black-tailed trainbearers.

Vertebrates communicate through a wide variety of sounds, but few mechanisms of sound production, besides vocalization, are well understood. During high-speed dives, male trainbearer hummingbirds (Lesbia spp.) produce a repeated series of loud snaps. Hypotheses for these peculiar sounds include the birds employing their elongated tails and/or striking their wings against each other. Each snap to human ears seems like a single acoustic event, but sound recordings revealed that each snap is actually a couplet of impulsive, atonal sounds produced ∼13 ms apart. Analysis of high-speed videos refute

Parasite island syndromes in the context of nidicolous ectoparasites: Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) in wild passerine birds from Azores Archipelago.

Island syndrome, previously established for isolation process of insular vertebrates' populations, have been adapted to insular parasites communities, termed parasite island syndromes. In this work, were studied for the first time the insular syndromes for nidicolous ectoparasites of the bird species, Turdus merula, Sylvia atricapilla, Fringilla coelebs and Erithacus rubecula from Azores and the mainland Portugal. Flea species were only recorded on Azorean birds, namely Dasypsyllus gallinulae and Ctenocephalides felis felis, known as not host-specific parasites. In the absence of shared flea s

Complete sporogony of Plasmodium relictum (lineage pGRW4) in mosquitoes Culex pipiens pipiens, with implications on avian malaria epidemiology.

Plasmodium relictum (lineage pGRW4) causes malaria in birds and is actively transmitted in countries with warm climates and also temperate regions of the New World. In Europe, the lineage pGRW4 has been frequently reported in many species of Afrotropical migrants after their arrival from wintering grounds, but is rare in European resident birds. Obstacles for transmission of this parasite in Europe have not been identified. Culex quinquefasciatus is an effective vector of pGRW4 malaria, but this mosquito is absent from temperate regions of Eurasia. It remains unclear if the lineage pGRW4 compl

Subalar cutaneous cysts with Harpirhynchus nidulans in bearded tits and hawfinches in Central Europe.

In wild bearded tits (Panurus biarmicus) and hawfinches (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) trapped in the Czech Republic and Slovakia from 1999 to 2003, characteristic yellow thin-walled subalar cutaneous cysts filled with friable material containing mites Harpirhynchus nidulans were found. The biggest cysts were 14 mm and 20 mm in size in bearded tits and in hawfinches, respectively. Histologically, the relatively thick wall of cysts contained erythrocytes (extravased or in small vessels) and heterophils; mononuclear cells were not found. The prevalences of subalar cysts in bearded tits at Nesyt

Anatomical and histomorphological characterization of the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, and ileum) of the shining sunbird (Cinnyris habessinicus): A paradigm for the nectarivorous niche in sunbirds.

The shining sunbird (Cinnyris habessinicus) is a specialized nectarivore with unique gastrointestinal adaptations to its dietary habit. This study aimed to characterize the morpho-functional features of the gastrointestinal tract of C. habessinicus using gross anatomical, histological, histochemical, morphometric, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Morphometric analysis revealed regional variations in tunics thickness: the esophagus had the thickest tunica serosa (55.67 ± 2.4 µm), the proventriculus had the thickest tunics mucosa (884.55 ± 13.05 µm), and the gizzard had the thi

Thermoregulatory costs of the innate immune response are modulated by winter food availability in a small passerine.

In winter, a challenge to the immune system could pose a major energetic trade-off for small endotherms, whereby increasing body temperature (Tb ; i.e. eliciting fever) may be beneficial to fight off invading pathogens yet incur a cost for vital energy-saving mechanisms. Having previously shown that the availability and acquisition of energy, through manipulation of food predictability, influences the depth of rest-phase hypothermia in a wild bird in winter, we expected that the nocturnal thermoregulatory component of the acute-phase immune response would also be modulated by food availability

Selective sweeps on different pigmentation genes mediate convergent evolution of island melanism in two incipient bird species.

Insular organisms often evolve predictable phenotypes, like flightlessness, extreme body sizes, or increased melanin deposition. The evolutionary forces and molecular targets mediating these patterns remain mostly unknown. Here we study the Chestnut-bellied Monarch (Monarcha castaneiventris) from the Solomon Islands, a complex of closely related subspecies in the early stages of speciation. On the large island of Makira M. c. megarhynchus has a chestnut belly, whereas on the small satellite islands of Ugi, and Santa Ana and Santa Catalina (SA/SC) M. c. ugiensis is entirely iridescent blue-blac

Evidence for common ancestry and microevolution of passerine-adapted Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in the UK and USA.

The evolution of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) within passerines has resulted in pathoadaptation of this serovar to the avian host in Europe. Recently, we identified an S. Typhimurium lineage from passerines in North America. The emergence of passerine-adapted S. Typhimurium in Europe and North America raises questions regarding its evolutionary origin. Here, we demonstrated that the UK and US passerine-adapted S. Typhimurium shared a common ancestor from ca. 1838, and larids played a key role in the clonal expansion by disseminating the common ancestor between North

Intestinal Histopathology due to an Acanthocephalan in Two Corvid Species from Northern Italy.

Carnivorous birds maintain parasites in the sylvatic cycle and have a role in their diffusion. The histopathology and ultrastructure of the intestine of 29 Hooded Crows (Corvus corone cornix) and 51 Eurasian Magpies (Pica pica), from the Province of Ferrara (Northern Italy), naturally infected with Sphaerirostris picae (Acanthocephala), were investigated. In both bird species, the prevalence of infection was around 10%, and the intensity of the infection in the Hooded Crows ranged from two to 12 acanthocephalans per host, whereas in the Eurasian Magpies it ranged from one to nine worms per bir

Effects of dietary lead exposure on vitamin levels in great tit nestlings - An experimental manipulation.

Exposure to metal pollution negatively affects animal physiology, including nutrient metabolism, but in the wild an effect can seldom be attributed to a single metal. Moreover, little is known about how the metabolism of vitamins, essential micronutrients for developing juveniles, is affected by toxic metals. Therefore we experimentally investigated the effects of lead (Pb), a widespread toxic metal, on four fat-soluble vitamins A (total and retinol), D3, E (total and α-tocopherol) and K and carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin and unidentified) in great tit (Parus major) nestlings. Aprocta cylindrica (Nematoda) infection in a European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) in Britain.

A European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) found dead in England had marked blepharitis and periocular alopecia associated with Aprocta cylindrica (Nematoda: Aproctidae) and concurrent mixed fungal infections. Aprocta cylindrica should be considered a differential diagnosis in periocular abnormalities of robins and other insectivorous, migratory passerines in Western Europe.

Description of the puparium of Protocalliphora nourtevai (Insecta: Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Avian blowflies are obligatory blood-sucking parasite larvae that typically pupariate in bird nests. The empty puparia are diagnostically important, as they are usually the only evidence for the presence of these parasites in nests. Compared to the Nearctic region, very little is known about puparia of Palearctic species. Here, we provide the first description of puparia of Protocalliphora nourtevai from nests of 2 bird species, namely, Phoenicurus phoenicurus and Phoenicurus ochruros from Finland. Puparia possessed irregular pronounced folds in the hyper-, meso-, and hypostigmatal region, and
