This case report presents an interesting and rare cause of meningitis in young infants, Pasteurella multocida. Not only is the organism unusual but the well appearance of the infant made this diagnosis surprising. The 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) clinical practice guidelines on well-appearing febrile infants brought a national guideline on the evaluation and management of fever in infants. However, providers should be aware that there is room for shared decision-making and that the guideline will miss a very small percentage of well-appearing infants with invasive bacterial infect

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella (P.) multocida commonly occurs in the upper respiratory tract of healthy domestic pets, especially cats and dogs. People become infected by biting, scratching or direct contact with the animal's saliva. Inflammation develops in the wound and limits itself to the skin and subcutaneous tissue. P. multocida may cause respiratory tract infections and severe life-threatening complications. The study aimed to identify the lower respiratory infection in humans caused by P. multocida, to determine the potential source of infection and the associated symptoms, comorbidities and

A psoas abscess is a rare infection; it is an accumulation of purulent material within the psoas muscle. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Escherichia coli, and other enteric Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes. These abscesses are thought to occur by either hematogenous spread, contiguous spread from adjacent organs, trauma, or local inoculation. Pasteurella multocida is a pathogen that usually infects a patient via a bite or scratch from dogs or cats and causes cellulitis at the site of the injury. Pasteurella multocida may also cause infection by the colonization

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of a wide range of diseases (pasteurellosis) and is a zoonotic pathogen in humans. The molecular epidemiology of P. multocida from rabbits in some southern European countries has been characterized, and the associations of some populations with the respiratory niche or virulence factors have been suggested. However, the population structure of P. multocida from rabbits in China has not been well characterized. In this study, 30 P. multocida isolates from rabbits without epidemiological relations in China were clustered using mutilocus sequence typin

Pasteurella multocida is a small, Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic coccobacillus that inhabits the normal microbiota of the respiratory tract of several animals, especially cats and dogs. By infecting humans, a wide range of clinical pictures can evolve varying from mild local cellulitis to more severe systemic diseases (e.g., meningitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, and bacteremia). Septic shock is an uncommon complication of P. multocida infection, with less than 100 cases reported in the literature. It is frequently associated with cirrhotic and immunocompromised individuals and rarely im

Purulent pericarditis is a rare entity, defined as the presence of neutrophilic pericardial effusion which is infected by a bacterial, fungus or parasite agent. The diagnosis can be challenging, especially if patients have taken previous antibiotic therapy; on the other hand the recognition of this pathology is often made late, with the onset of severe symptoms or signs of cardiac tamponade or even only at the autopsy. The authors describe the case of a 82-year-old woman with history of extensive laceration of the right lower limb from a dog bite in July 2016, admitted to the Cardiology Depart

INTRODUCTION: We describe a case of refractory Pasteurella Canis keratitis that initially failed antimicrobial treatment but was successfully treated with a conjunctival flap followed by a penetrating keratoplasty.
CASE DISCUSSION: A 70-year-old male had persistent corneal edema related to previous herpes zoster keratouveitis with visual acuity of 20/400. An endothelial keratoplasty was performed with improvement in vision to 20/25. Several months after this surgery the patient developed a corneal infiltrate and cultures grew Pasturella canis. The infection persisted despite topical treatment

Infection of an aortic endograft is a rare complication following endovascular aneurysm repair. These patients have been treated with explantation of the graft to obtain source control followed by an extra-anatomic bypass to restore circulation. The present case study describes an interesting case of Pasteurella infection involving an aortic endograft managed nonoperatively by percutaneous drainage and graft preservation.

Pasteurella multocida belongs to the normal flora of the respiratory and digestive tract of many animals. Animal exposure is a considerable risk factor for Pasteurella infection. P. multocida is the most common cause of local infection after an animal bite but is an unusual cause of meningitis. We present a case of bacterial meningitis by P. multocida in a 37-year-old man who worked in a pig farm and was bitten by a pig. The patient had a defect located in the lamina cribosa and this lesion could be the gateway of the infection, although in this case the infection could also be acquired throug

The isolation of Pasteurella multocida from several red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) with purulent to necrotizing gingivitis, mandibular osteomyelitis, and conjunctivitis in a private zoological park prompted a cross-sectional prevalence study in two zoological collections. The study demonstrated a high prevalence of P. multocida carriage in clinically healthy red-necked wallabies. In one collection (n= 7), P. multocida was isolated from the gingival mucosa of two animals (28.6%) and the conjunctiva of one animal (14.3%). In another collection (n = 29), P. multocida was isolated fro

Pasteurella multocida serogroup D strain, which produces P. multocida toxin (PMT), is a widespread and harmful pathogen of respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) in swine. Vaccination has been considered the most desirable and effective approach for controlling the diseases caused by toxigenic P. multocida. To investigate the antigenicity and immunogenicity of partial fragments of recombinant PMT, recombinant proteins of the N-terminal (PMT-A), middle (PMT-B), Cterminal (PMT-C), and middle-C-terminal (PMT2.3) regions of PMT were successfully produced in

Pasteurella multocida is a non-motile, faculatively-anaerobic, gram-negative bacillus associated with a spectrum of human disease. Direct and indirect zoonotic transmission is recognised with animal bites being most frequently encountered as a result of salivary colonisation in farm and domestic animals. Despite the prevalence of P. multocida in swine herds, the relationship between porcine colonisation and human disease is poorly established. This lesson reports a previously unrecognised mode of zoonotic transmission in respiratory pasteurellosis; domestic cooking of pig trotters.

We present briefly 2 newborns with Pasteurella multocida meningitis following incidental household exposure to domestic pets and review 36 additional cases from the literature. Of 38 reported cases of P. multocida meningitis during infancy, 18 were less than or equal to 1 month of age. All but one of the infants less than 1 month of age had documented exposure to household dogs and/or cats, most only incidentally.

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is an acute disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by Pasteurella multocida 6:B. Outbreaks of the disease have been closely associated with carrier animals that transmit the organism to susceptible animals during stressful condition. This study was conducted to determine whether goats exposed intranasally to P. multocida 6:B can transmit the organism to contact goats. Thirty-six healthy local Katjang goats were divided into four groups and goats of groups 1 and 3 were each inoculated intranasally with a 1-ml inoculum that contained 1 x 10(9) CFU/ml of live P. mult

We report the case of a patient with pneumonia caused by Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida). An 83-year-old woman admitted for bronchiectasis, productive cough, and a high fever was found in chest radiography on admission to have a new infiltrative shadow in the left lower lung field. Chest computed tomography indicated bilateral bronchiectasis and an infiltrative lingular shadow. P. multocida was isolated from sputum samples. Biapenem and minocycline therapy ameliorated symptoms. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed that the clinical isolate recovered was identical to the P. multo

Mannheimia haemolytica (previously known as Pasteurella haemolytica) is a weakly hemolytic, gram-negative coccobacillus that is an opportunistic pathogen of cattle, sheep and other ruminants. In stressed, immunocompromised animals, the organism causes a fibrinous, necrotic pneumonia, commonly called "shipping fever". In the United States, economic losses due to shipping fever pneumonia surpass the combined cost of all other diseases of cattle. M. haemolytica, which is a member of the family Pasteurelleaceae, includes twelve serotypes (A1, A2, A5-A9, A12-14, A16 and A17) based on capsular antig

Respiratory infections which commonly occur in sheep and goats often result from adverse physical and physiological stress combined with viral and bacterial infections. Inevitably, Pasteurella haemolytica pneumonia occurs as a result of these interactions. In this review, we present recent advances in research on the complex etiology of pneumonia involving P. haemolytica. Initially stress, induced by factors such as heat, overcrowding, exposure to inclement weather, poor ventilation, handling and transport is a major predisposing factor. Respiratory viruses including parainfluenza 3 (PI-3) vir

Reductive amination of repromicin with polyfunctional amines has led to new macrolide antibacterial agents, some of which are highly potent against the Gram-negative pathogen Pasteurella multocida both in vitro and in a mouse infection model. A key element in this discovery was the recognition that among certain known macrolides increasing lipophilicity results in diminished in vivo activity. One repromicin derivative, 20-[N-[3-(dimethylamino)-propyl]-N-L-alanylamino]-20-deoxorepro micin (35), was selected for advanced evaluation. At 5 mg/kg, a single subcutaneous dose was found to control ind

Antigenic properties of two mutants of Pasteurella haemolytica, strains 59B0071 and 59B0072, that do not produce detectable leukotoxin were investigated. Western blot (immunoblot) analysis with a number of polyclonal sera from animals recovering from pasteurellosis revealed that both mutants secreted a variety of antigens that were also present in cultures of several wild-type strains. These antigens ranged from about 100 to 15 kDa. Mutant strain 59B0071 was found to be totally deficient in leukotoxin, as judged not only by Western blotting but also by cytotoxicity assays with bovine lymphoma
