Pasteurella multocida is known to be the most commonly isolated pathogen of soft tissue infections caused by cat or dog-inflicted wounds. We present a case of a 66-year-old female who was bitten by a cat, prescribed antibiotic therapy outpatient, and developed a septic metacarpophalangeal joint despite appropriate antibiotics. A failure to improve with appropriate antibiotic therapy should raise suspicion of a source control problem and prompt surgical intervention, a principle that is highlighted in this case. Pasteurella multocida septic arthritis of the fingers manifests in less than 4% of

Pasteurellosis, a disease caused by Pasteurella multocida, is responsible for economic losses in rabbit industrial farms due to rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, metritis, mastitis, orchitis, subcutaneous abscesses, otitis, encephalitis, and septicaemic forms. Although the occurrence of the disease is conditioned by predisposing factors that affect the rabbit immune response, the strains of P. multocida involved in the infection may have a different pathogenic ability. Therefore, typing of strains spread among the rabbits is important to assess their pathogenic potential. The aim of this st

Pasteurella multocida causes acute/chronic pasteurellosis in porcine, resulting in considerable economic losses globally. The draft genomes of two Indian strains NIVEDIPm17 (serogroup D) and NIVEDIPm36 (serogroup A) were sequenced. A total of 2182-2284 coding sequences (CDSs) were predicted along with 5-6 rRNA and 45-46 tRNA genes in the genomes. Multilocus sequence analysis and LPS genotyping showed the presence of ST50: genotype 07 and ST74: genotype 06 in NIVEDIPm17 and NIVEDIPm36, respectively. Pangenome analysis of 61 strains showed the presence of 1653 core genes, 167 soft core genes, 75

OBJECTIVES: In COVID-19 patients, bacterial and fungal pulmonary coinfections, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, or Aspergillus, have been reported, but to our knowledge, no case has been reported due to Pasteurella multocida.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe three cases of Pasteurella multocida coinfections occurring during the 4th wave of COVID-19 in Martinique (French West Indies).
RESULTS: All three cases were fatal; thus, Pasteurella multocida has to be considered as a potentially severe coinfection agent.
CONCLUSIONS: Alteration of the e

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection following bites or scratches caused by cats and dogs. It is a rarely reported and often overlooked pathogen. Typical presentation is a rapidly developing cellulitis at the infection site. Here we present a rare case of worsening lower extremity paraplegia due to a spinal epidural abscess caused by P. multocida. The patient was a 56-year-old female who had been experiencing several days of back pain, became septic and went on to develop paraplegia. Failure to improve prompted re-evaluation of the diagnosis with subsequent imaging notable for

INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella is a Gram-negative coccobacillus that causes a wide spectrum of diseases in humans and is commonly transmitted from cat and dog bites. An increasing number of cats and dogs are kept as pets in American households which increases the risk of pet-related infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old African American woman with multiple comorbidities presented with fever, vomiting and diarrhea; she later developed septic shock requiring vasopressors and intubation. She was found to have Pasteurella multocida bacteremia. Her hospital course was complicated by a pulseless

Pasteurella multocida, often found as part of the human oral flora and in finger/toenails, also exists in many animals, especially cats, dogs, and pigs. Although rare, pasteurella infection in neonates can cause serious systemic disease, such as meningitis. In this article, a 23-day-old girl presented with decreased appetite and irritability for >2 days. Eighteen days previously her pet cat had jumped onto the left side of her head while she was sleeping. On laboratory data C-reactive protein was high, and on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis leukocyte count was extremely high, with low gluco

Pasteurella multocida is able to cause disease in humans and in a wide range of animal hosts, including fowl cholera in birds, atrophic rhinitis in pigs, and snuffles in rabbits. Together with Mannheimia haemolytica, P. multocida also represents a major bacterial causative agent of bovine respiratory disease (BRD), which is one of the most important causes for economic losses for the cattle backgrounding and feedlot industry. Commercially available vaccines only partially prevent infections caused by P. multocida and M. haemolytica. Thus, this study characterized the immunogenicity of P. multo

Therapeutic apheresis and dialysis : official peer-reviewed journal of the International Society for Apheresis, the Japanese Society for Apheresis, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy2010eng
A patient on continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis for chronic kidney disease due to type 2 diabetes mellitus developed peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis induced by Pasteurella multocida that was isolated from a sample of dialysis effluent. The route of infection was unknown for this case; however, P. multocida was also isolated from a culture of a pharyngeal swab obtained from the patient's cat. There was no evidence that the cat had bitten and ruptured the peritoneal dialysis tubing or bags. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed that the P. multocida isolated from the patie

Pasteurella is a Gram-negative coccobacillus found in 70-90% of oral cavities of cats, and as well, is isolated from the digestive systems of dogs, rats, rabbits, monkeys, and other animals. Pasteurella multocida has been known to cause infections in humans, the most familiar being soft tissue infection after animal bites. However, this organism may affect a variety of systems, causing serious disease. Pasteurella multocida can cause septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, meningitis, and septicemia. We report a case of bacterial meningitis, subgaleal, subdural, and epidural

The mitogenic Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is a major virulence factor of P. multocida, which causes Pasteurellosis in man and animals. The toxin activates the small GTPase RhoA, the MAP kinase ERK and STAT proteins via the stimulation of members of two G protein families, G(q) and G(12/13). PMT action also results in an increase in inositol phosphates, which is due to the stimulation of PLCbeta via Galpha(q). Recent studies indicate that PMT additionally activates Galpha(i) to inhibit adenylyl cyclase. Here we show that PMT acts not only via Galpha but also through Gbetagamma signaling.

An investigation was carried out to study the antibiotic sensitivity of avian strains of Pasteurella multocida and to select an effective antimicrobial agent for control of avian pasteurellosis in India. A total of 123 strains of P. multocida recently isolated from different avian species (chicken, duck, turkey, quail, and goose), from different regions of India were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity tests using 20 different antibiotics. Absolute resistance was observed against sulfadiazine. The studies indicated that the strains were most sensitive to chloramphenicol (73.98%), followed by e

A vaccine against pneumonic pasteurellosis was evaluated for efficacy at two dilutions in lambs transported by sea from New Zealand to Saudi Arabia. The experimental vaccine was a killed Pasteurella haemolytica serotype A1 and A2 preparation. There was no evidence of either dilution of the vaccine leading to a lower pneumonia death or lesion rate than for the control group. However, bacteriological examinations to establish the causality of the pneumonia cases showed Pasteurella multocida to be the dominant organism, while P. haemolytica types A1 and/or A2 occurred at only a very low incidence

Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Superficial DFI can lead to contiguous spread to soft tissue and bone as well as hematogenous spread and sepsis. It frequently involves typical pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or it may be polymicrobial, involving Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes. Atypical organisms can also be responsible, especially when environmental exposures are present. We report a rare case of Pasteurella multocida osteom

Domestic animals are common in Australian households; however, there is little research into the potential risks these animals pose to patients undergoing in-home peritoneal dialysis (PD). Cats and dogs are known to carry many potential pathogens, including Pasteurella multocida. We reviewed the ANZDATA Peritoneal Dialysis Peritonitis Registry for cases of peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida between 2011 and 2023. Cases identified were younger and more likely to be female compared with the Australian PD population who developed peritonitis due to other organisms. Of the total 32 episodes,

A 33-day-old previously healthy term female is admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with fever, lethargy and bulging fontanel. Given concern for meningitis, a lumbar puncture is performed and empiric treatment is initiated. The cerebrospinal fluid culture results reveal Pasteurella multocida. The patient is treated with intravenous ampicillin for 3 weeks and discharged with close outpatient follow-up.

The emergence of simultaneous resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics presents an increasing threat. Plasmid-borne multiresistance and integrative conjugative elements have been reported in Pasteurella multocida. We report an alternative strategy for the development of multiresistance observed in a P. multocida strain (Pm238) isolated from calf pneumonia. We identified genes integrated into the chromosomal DNA without known integrative and conjugative elements. These genes conferred resistance to streptomycin (strA), tetracycline (tetB), chloramphenicol (catAIII), and sulphonamides (sulI

Pasteurella multocida (PM) can invade the upper respiratory tract of the body and cause death and high morbidity. Tildipirosin, a new 16-membered-ring macrolide antimicrobial, has been recommended for the treatment of respiratory diseases. The objective of this research was to improve the dose regimes of tildipirosin to PM for reducing the macrolides resistance development with the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling approach and to establish an alternate cutoff for tildipirosin against PM. A single dose (4 mg/kg body weight) of tildipirosin was administered via intramuscular (i.m
