Survey of pedestrian detection for advanced driver assistance systems.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs), and particularly pedestrian protection systems (PPSs), have become an active research area aimed at improving traffic safety. The major challenge of PPSs is the development of reliable on-board pedestrian detection systems. Due to the varying appearance of pedestrians (e.g., different clothes, changing size, aspect ratio, and dynamic shape) and the unstructured environment, it is very difficult to cope with the demanded robustness of this kind of system. Two problems arising in this research area are the lack of public benchmarks and the difficulty i

Subnetwork hierarchies of biochemical pathways.

MOTIVATION: The vastness and complexity of the biochemical networks that have been mapped out by modern genomics calls for decomposition into subnetworks. Such networks can have inherent non-local features that require the global structure to be taken into account in the decomposition procedure. Furthermore, basic questions such as to what extent the network (graph theoretically) can be said to be built by distinct subnetworks are little studied. RESULTS: We present a method to decompose biochemical networks into subnetworks based on the global geometry of the network. This method enables us

Effects of adaptation on numerosity decoding in the human brain.

Psychophysical studies have shown that numerosity is a sensory attribute susceptible to adaptation. Neuroimaging studies have reported that, at least for relatively low numbers, numerosity can be accurately discriminated in the intra-parietal sulcus. Here we developed a novel rapid adaptation paradigm where adapting and test stimuli are separated by pauses sufficient to dissociate their BOLD activity. We used multivariate pattern recognition to classify brain activity evoked by non-symbolic numbers over a wide range (20-80), both before and after psychophysical adaptation to the highest numero

Automatic working area classification in peripheral blood smears without cell central zone extraction.

In this paper we study automatic classification of working areas in peripheral blood smears using image analysis and recognition methods. Such automatic classification can provide objective and reproducible quality control for the evaluation of smears and smear maker devices. However, research in this filed has drawn little attention. Existing methods either can not differentiate correctly different cell distributions or rely on the extraction of the central pallor zones in cells for counting, which are not always observable. In contrast, we do not rely on the pallor zone extraction thus on mo

Spatiotemporal Dual-Channel Interpretable Hybrid Neural Network for HD-sEMG-Based Gesture Recognition.

Accurate gesture recognition is crucial for precision control of upper limb prostheses. High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) enhances spatial resolution and information richness of human gesture representation, thus improving myoelectric control of bionic limbs. Recently, deep learning has been increasingly applied to HD-sEMG to enhance gesture recognition performance. However, the black-box nature of neural networks limits their interpretability and model optimization, hindering their practical application. In this paper, we developed a spatiotemporal dual-channel interpretable hyb

YOFOR : You only focus on object regions for tiny object detection in aerial images.

With development of deep learning methods, performance of object detection has been greatly improved. However, the high resolution of remotely sensed images, the complexity of the background, the uneven distribution of objects, and the uneven number of objects among them lead to unsatisfactory detection results of existing detectors. Facing these challenges, we propose YOFOR (You Only Focus on Object Regions), an adaptive local sensing enhancement network. It contains three components: adaptive local sensing module, fuzzy enhancement module and class balance module. Among them, adaptive local

Multi-Scale pattern-Aware task-Gating network for aerial small object detection.

With the advancement of high-precision remote sensing equipment and precision measurement technology, object detection based on remote sensing images (RSIs) has been widely used in military and civilian fields. Different from traditional general-purpose environments, remote sensing presents unique challenges that significantly complicate the detection process. Specifically: (1) RSIs cover extensive monitoring areas, resulting in complex and textured backgrounds; and (2) objects often exhibit cluttered distributions, small sizes, and considerable scale variations across categories. To effective

Lower-Limb Motor Imagery Recognition Prototype Based on EEG Acquisition, Filtering, and Machine Learning-Based Pattern Detection.

Advances in brain-computer interface (BCI) research have explored various strategies for acquiring and processing electroencephalographic (EEG) signals to detect motor imagery (MI) activities. However, the complexity of multichannel clinical systems and processing techniques can limit their accessibility outside specialized centers, where complex setups are not feasible. This paper presents a proof-of-concept prototype of a single-channel EEG acquisition and processing system designed to identify lower-limb motor imagery. The proposed proof-of-concept prototype enables the wireless acquisition

Novel gait phases recognition framework leveraging the temporal structure of the myoelectric activity.

Objective. Reliable control of lower limb prostheses during gait using surface electromyography requires robust decoding of myoelectric signals to ensure safety and efficiency. Conventional myoelectric pattern recognition (PR) methods, which classify features extracted from each window, often yield inaccurate and unstable output, limiting their practical use.Approach. To deal with these issues, two novel temporal myoelectric-based gait phase recognition frameworks are presented. Temporal activation profile (TAP) considers a sequence of features extracted from consecutive windows, and dual acti

Cattle identification based on multiple feature decision layer fusion.

In farming scenarios, cattle identification has become a key issue for the development of precision farming. In precision livestock farming, single-feature recognition methods are prone to misjudgment in complex scenarios involving multiple cattle obscuring each other during drinking and feeding. This paper proposes a decision-level identification method based on the multi-feature fusion of cattle faces, muzzle patterns, and ear tags. The method utilizes the SOLO algorithm to segment images and employs the FaceNet and PP-OCRv4 networks to extract features for the cattle's faces, muzzle pattern

Local Activation Identification in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation Intracardiac EGM Signals for Automatic Spatio-temporal Dispersion Pattern Recognition.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac condition that predominantly affects the elderly population, presenting a significant risk factor for strokes and thus raising concerns in public health. Catheter ablation (CA) stands out as the most effective long-term treatment for persistent AF. A recently proposed novel CA approach is based on spatio-temporal dispersion (STD). This technique targets the STD patterns associated with active zones responsible for sustaining the arrhythmia. In this work we want to solve the peak detection problem, since it is a fundamental step for the automatic cla

Wrist EMG-based Gestures Recognition for Finger and Wrist Motions.

Gesture recognition is a relatively natural humanmachine interface (HMI). Electromyography (EMG) based gesture recognition methods have been extensively investigated in upper limb prostheses as a special HMI, in which EMG sensors are mostly mounted on the proximal part of the forearm. However, for more general applications beyond upper-limb prosthetics, the wrist may be a more suitable position for more intuitive HMIs, in which independent finger movements in addition to wrist gestures can be realized. In this study, we propose to investigate the recognition performance for gestures of the ind

An Improved k-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm for Recognition and Classification of Thyroid Nodules.

OBJECTIVES: To complete the task of automatic recognition and classification of thyroid nodules and solve the problem of high classification error rates when the samples are imbalanced. METHODS: An improved k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm is proposed and a method for automatic thyroid nodule classification based on the improved KNN algorithm is established. In the improved KNN algorithm, we consider not only the number of class labels for various classes of data in KNNs, but also the corresponding weights. And we use the Minkowski distance measure instead of the Euclidean distance measure.

Robust Environmental Sound Recognition With Sparse Key-Point Encoding and Efficient Multispike Learning.

The capability for environmental sound recognition (ESR) can determine the fitness of individuals in a way to avoid dangers or pursue opportunities when critical sound events occur. It still remains mysterious about the fundamental principles of biological systems that result in such a remarkable ability. Additionally, the practical importance of ESR has attracted an increasing amount of research attention, but the chaotic and nonstationary difficulties continue to make it a challenging task. In this article, we propose a spike-based framework from a more brain-like perspective for the ESR tas

Pattern recognition and direct control home use of a multi-articulating hand prosthesis.

Although more multi-articulating hand prostheses have become commercially available, replacing a missing hand remains challenging from a control perspective. This study investigated myoelectric direct control and pattern recognition home use of a multi-articulating hand prosthesis for individuals with a transradial amputation. Four participants were fitted with an i-limb Ultra Revolution hand and a Coapt COMPLETE CONTROL system. An occupational therapist provided training for each control style and how to use the various grips. The number of grips available to each individual was determined by

Spatial distribution of HD-EMG improves identification of task and force in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies show that spatial distribution of High Density surface EMG maps (HD-EMG) improves the identification of tasks and their corresponding contraction levels. However, in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), some nerves that control muscles are damaged, leaving some muscle parts without an innervation. Therefore, HD-EMG maps in patients with iSCI are affected by the injury and they can be different for every patient. The objective of this study is to investigate the spatial distribution of intensity in HD-EMG recordings to distinguish co-activation patterns

3D liver segmentation using multiple region appearances and graph cuts.

PURPOSE: Efficient and accurate 3D liver segmentations from contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) images play an important role in therapeutic strategies for hepatic diseases. However, inhomogeneous appearances, ambiguous boundaries, and large variance in shape often make it a challenging task. The existence of liver abnormalities poses further difficulty. Despite the significant intensity difference, liver tumors should be segmented as part of the liver. This study aims to address these challenges, especially when the target livers contain subregions with distinct appearances. METHODS:

Automated face extraction and normalization of 3D Mesh Data.

3D stereophotography is rapidly being adopted by medical researchers for analysis of facial forms and features. An essential step for many applications using 3D face data is to first crop the head and face from the raw images. The goal of this paper is to develop a reliable automatic methodology for extracting the face from raw data with texture acquired from a stereo imaging system, based on the medical researchers' specific requirements. We present an automated process, including eye and nose estimation, face detection, Procrustes analysis and final noise removal to crop out the faces and no
