Understanding recovery experiences and occupational support needs among substance use peer workers: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The USA is facing a substance use workforce crisis, due in part to a shortage of providers. Substance use peer workers (PWs) fill a critical gap in the care continuum and are a growing sector of the workforce. In their daily work of providing non-clinical services to highly vulnerable people who use drugs, PWs are repeatedly exposed to stress, trauma and loss, which can adversely affect their well-being and recovery. This review aims to synthesise available evidence on PWs' experiences working in the field, its impact on their recovery and their occupational support needs. METHO

Peer-facilitated community-based interventions for adolescent health in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents aged 10-19 represent one sixth of the world's population and have a high burden of morbidity, particularly in low-resource settings. We know little about the potential of community-based peer facilitators to improve adolescent health in such contexts. METHODS: We did a systematic review of peer-facilitated community-based interventions for adolescent health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We searched databases for randomised controlled trials of interventions featuring peer education, counselling, activism, and/or outreach facilitated by young people aged

Status of surveillance and routine immunization performances in Amhara Region, Ethiopia: findings from in-depth peer review.

INTRODUCTION: Trend analyses of non-polio AFP and stool adequacy rates in Amhara Region showed optimal performance over the years. However, sub regional gaps continue to persist in certain zones where the reasons for low performance were not well documented. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of the disease surveillance and immunization system in Amhara Region, Ethiopia with emphasis on low performing woredas and zones. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2-10, 2015 to assess the structure, core and support surveillance functions in five

Twenty years' research on peer victimization and psychosocial maladjustment: a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies.

Cross-sectional quantitative designs are often used to investigate whether peer victimization is positively related to psychosocial maladjustment. This paper presents a meta-analytic review of cross-sectional studies, published between 1978 and 1997, of the association of peer victimization with psychosocial maladjustment. Mean effect sizes were calculated for the association between peer victimization and each form of maladjustment (depression, loneliness, generalized and social anxiety, and global and social self-worth) assessed. The results suggested that victimization is most strongly rela

What is the state of the art on traditional medicine interventions for zoonotic diseases in the Indian subcontinent? A scoping review of the peer-reviewed evidence base.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine (TM) interventions are plausible therapeutic alternatives to conventional medical interventions against emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases, particularly in low-and middle-income countries that may lack resources and infrastructure. Despite the growing popularity in the usage of TM interventions, their clinical safety and effectiveness are still contested within conventional healthcare in many countries. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed literature that synthesises and maps the evidence on TM interventions for the treatment and pre

Post-publication peer review and the identification of methodological and reporting issues in COVID-19 trials: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine to what extent systematic reviewers and post-preprint and post-publication peer review identified methodological and reporting issues in COVID-19 trials that could be easily resolved by the authors. DESIGN: Qualitative study. DATA SOURCES: COVID-NMA living systematic review (covid-nma.com), PubPeer, medRxiv, Research Square, SSRN. METHODS: We considered randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in COVID-NMA that evaluated pharmacological treatments for COVID-19 and retrieved systematic reviewers' assessments of the risk of bias and outcome reporting bias. Peer support for borderline personality disorder: A critical review of its feasibility, acceptability, and alignment with concepts of recovery.

Many organizations have adopted peer support to increase service alignment with recovery-oriented principles. Yet, few studies have scrutinized borderline personality disorder (BPD)-specific concepts of "recovery" and "recovery-oriented practice," nor evaluated the extent to which existing peer support services (PSS) align with these concepts. We addressed these knowledge gaps in four phases: (a) a literature review to understand BPD-specific concepts of "recovery" and "recovery-oriented practice," (b) a literature review and open web search to describe the implementation, feasibility, or effe

Provision of peer support at the intersection of homelessness and problem substance use services: a systematic 'state of the art' review.

BACKGROUND: Peer support refers to a process whereby individuals with lived experience of a particular phenomenon provide support to others by explicitly drawing on their personal experience. It has been adopted in a variety of service contexts including homelessness, substance use, mental and physical health. Those who experience homelessness have some of the most complex intersecting health and social challenges. This 'state of the art' review provides a systematic search and synthesis of literature examining use of peer support models within services for people impacted by homelessness and

An external peer review instrument for Korean Medicine clinical practice guideline drafts (KM-EPRI): development and content validation.

BACKGROUND: Korean Medicine clinical practice guidelines (KM-CPGs) undergo mandatory external peer review of their drafts during development, yet reviewers lack a standardized, validated instrument to guide this task. Widely used appraisal tools assess the quality of completed guidelines rather than support the section-level review of a draft. We aimed to develop an external peer review instrument for KM-CPG drafts (KM-EPRI) and to assess its content validity. METHODS: In this two-phase methodological study, a draft instrument was first derived by directed qualitative content analysis of the

Bias and Reliability of AI-Based Peer Review: A Comparative Study of ChatGPT and Claude Evaluating Scientific Abstracts.

BACKGROUND: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) models as reviewers of scientific content raises concerns about potential biases related to author identity and about the reproducibility of their evaluations. We assessed whether AI-based reviewers exhibit gender or geographic bias and evaluated the reproducibility of their scoring of scientific abstracts. METHODS: We randomly selected 10 general internal medicine journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (impact factor ≥ 1.5). For each journal, five original research abstracts were retrieved in April 2026 from the Web of Science. Ea

Emergency Department Peer Recovery Support Services for Individuals with Substance Use Disorders: A Systematic Review of Comparative Studies.

Individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) access care through emergency departments (EDs) more frequently than the general population, representing a critical opportunity for addiction treatment linkage. Peer recovery support services (PRSS) utilize individuals with lived recovery experience to provide peer support for those struggling with addiction. This service may be particularly helpful in the ED, where prior negative experiences can erode patient trust and care often involves extended waiting periods during which motivation can fluctuate. PRSS may enhance engagement in this setting

The Impact of Peer Support Through Mobile Health Applications on Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Fewer than 40% of infants are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months despite global recommendations, hindered by socioeconomic, cultural, and systemic barriers. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies provide scalable breastfeeding support, but the effectiveness of digital peer support across settings remains underexplored. This systematic review and meta-analysis searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published between 1 January 2010 and 1 May 2025 (PROSPERO reference number: CRD420251164765). Measuring severe adverse events and medication selection using a "PEER Report" for nonpsychotic patients: a retrospective chart review.

UNLABELLED: We previously reported on an objective new tool that uses quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) normative- and referenced-electroencephalography sampling databases (currently called Psychiatric EEG Evaluation Registry [PEER]), which may assist physicians in determining medication selection for optimal efficacy to overcome trial-and-error prescribing. The PEER test compares drug-free QEEG features for individual patients to a database of patients with similar EEG patterns and known outcomes after pharmacological interventions. Based on specific EEG data elements and historical

A Peer Review Intervention for Monitoring and Evaluating sites (PRIME) that improved randomized controlled trial conduct and performance.

OBJECTIVE: Good clinical practice (GCP) guidelines emphasize trial site monitoring, although the implementation is unspecified and evidence for benefit is sparse. We aimed to develop a site monitoring process using peer reviewers to improve staff training, site performance, data collection, and GCP compliance. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The Peer Review Intervention for Monitoring and Evaluating sites (PRIME) team observed and gave feedback on trial recruitment and follow-up appointments, held staff meetings, and examined documentation during annual 2-day site visits. The intervention was evalu

Vigabatrin as initial therapy for infantile spasms: a European retrospective survey. Sabril IS Investigator and Peer Review Groups.

PURPOSE: The efficacy and tolerability of vigabatrin (VGB) as an add-on therapy in the treatment of infantile spasm (IS) prompted physicians to explore its use as the first drug in this seizure type. METHODS: Our retrospective study included 250 infants diagnosed with IS; the data obtained were subjected to peer-group review. Of this infant population, 192 infants were considered to have classic IS and had received VGB as their first treatment for the spasms. There was a slight preponderance of boys (57%) in this population. Mean age of IS onset was 5.8 months; 60% had typical hypsarrhythmia.

Implementation and Outcomes of Peer Support Workers in Services for People With Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

Peer Support Workers have increasingly been deployed within mental health services to provide support and empower those that may be experiencing challenges of a similar nature to them. While the evidence base is growing, less is known about peer support for people with personality disorder. A systematic review was carried out to identify any existing literature on Peer Support Workers in services for people with personality disorder (Prospero ID: 589614). Five databases were searched (MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed and CINAHL) from inception to 15 August 2025. Data extracted from relevant s

Statement on the impact of the harmonised classification on the conclusion on the peer review of the pesticide risk assessment of the active substance flutianil.

Following the publication of the EFSA conclusion on flutianil in 2014, the rapporteur Member State (RMS), the United Kingdom, launched a formal process for harmonising the classification of flutianil. The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) finalised a RAC opinion on the proposed harmonised classification of flutianil in 2016. For some hazard classes, the harmonised classification proposed by the RAC was different than the provisional classification used in the EFSA conclusion. It should be noted that this difference was based on new information and does

Year-Long Undergraduate Cell Biology-Based Data-Driven Literature Review Research Experiences That Successfully Culminate in Peer-Reviewed Publications.

During the COVID pandemic, not only were the apprenticeship-style research opportunities limited but course-linked laboratories transitioned to using online components. Moreover, laboratory research experiences for undergraduates can be associated with high costs and restricted space availability. To tackle these challenges and to broadly engage students in research to support them in an array of career paths, efforts were made to develop a data-driven literature review research experience that begins as a CURE in a high-enrollment Cell Biology course (first phase) and continues through two ad
