From undisturbed Antarctic habitats (permafrost sediments 30-150 thousand years of age, water of Radok Lake) and superficial deposits contaminated with petroleum products, we isolated 14 and 9 strains of Penicillium fungi, respectively. Exometabolites of 22 strains of the genus Penicillium, section Chrysogena isolated from low-temperature ecotopes of various geographical regions were analyzed. BACKGROUND: Penicillium marneffei disseminates hematogenously and can infect most organs, though infection leading to osteolysis is extremely rare. We describe the clinical and laboratory features, management, and outcomes of patients with penicilliosis marneffei (PSM) with osteolytic lesions.

This is the first indigenous case of disseminated histoplasmosis reported from the Penicillium marneffei endemic area in southern China. It was diagnosed by histopathology of tissue, gross and microscopic morphology of the culture and PCR assay of the isolated fungus. Successful antifungal treatment was with itraconazole 400 mg/day for 5 months. This case suggests that histoplasmosis should be an important differential diagnosis in immunocompromised patients in southern China and South East Asia (the only endemic area for P. marneffei).

We report a 39-year-old male who presented with tuberculous meningitis and was found also to be HIV-infected.
