Long-term work disability due to type I and II bipolar disorder: findings of a six-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. However, the prevalence and predictors of long-term work disability among patients with type I and II BD have scarcely been studied. We investigated the clinical predictors of long-term work disability among patients with BD. METHODS: The Jorvi Bipolar Study (JoBS) is a naturalistic prospective cohort study (n = 191) of adult psychiatric in- and out-patients with DSM-IV type I and II BD in three Finnish cities. Within JoBS we examined the prevalence and predictors of disability pension being granted during

Exercise tolerance and work ability following aorto-coronary bypass surgery.

This investigation was performed to study the reasons for receiving disability pension after aortocoronary bypass surgery. During the period March 1983 to November 1985, 250 patients underwent aortocoronary bypass surgery. At a mean follow-up of 4.9 years (range 3.6-6.7) after the operation, 31 patients were dead. Of the 219 survivors, all except four underwent a follow-up examination including an exercise test. The mean physical work capacity had increased from 92.2 W preoperatively to 119.3 W at follow-up (p < 0.001). At follow-up, however, 72 patients had received disability pension. The pe

Housing Hardship Among Older Adults Living Alone: The Protective Roles of Aging and Housing Policies.

This study investigates the association between living arrangements and housing hardship among older adults across 21 high-income countries. Using data from the Gallup World Poll (2016-2020) and OECD databases, we employ multilevel regression models that can assess how individual- and country-level factors, including public spending on pensions and housing policies such as social housing stock and rent control, moderate these associations. Older adults living alone experience significantly higher rates of housing hardship compared to their counterparts, even after adjusting for demographic and

Occupational disability caused by dizziness and vertigo: a register-based prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the magnitude of dizziness/vertigo in primary health care, prospective studies are scarce, and few studies have focused on vocational consequences. Using the International Classification of Primary Health Care (ICPC), GPs have two alternative diagnoses, H82 (vertiginous syndrome) and N17 (vertigo/dizziness), when issuing sickness certificates to these patients. AIM: To assess the incidence of dizziness/vertigo in long-term sickness absence and to identify sociodemographic and diagnostic predictors for transition into disability pension. DESIGN OF STUDY: Register-based pro

Social characteristics and social benefit use among premenopausal breast cancer survivors in Denmark: a population-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: In 2020, one million women aged < 55 years were diagnosed with breast cancer globally. The impact of breast cancer and its treatments on these women's ability to work and need for social benefits may differ by social characteristics. We evaluated social benefit use following breast cancer by education and cohabitation. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study, including women aged 18-55 years diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer in Denmark during 2002-2011. Statistics Denmark provided information on cohabitation, education, and social benefit use from 1 ye

Metastatic melanoma: clinicopathologic features and overall survival comparison.

UNLABELLED: The aim is to examine whether characteristics of social relationships predict extended employment beyond the pensionable age among Finnish public sector workers. The study population consisted of 4014 participants (83% women, age 62.56 ± 1.21) of the Finnish Retirement and Aging Study followed between 2014 and 2019. Extended employment was defined as the difference between actual retirement date and individual age-related pensionable date and classified into three groups: no extension (retired on pensionable age or extended by < 3 months), short extension (3 months-< 1 year), and l

[Identification of the most common problems and mistakes in the medical certification of inability to work for disability pension provision based on the expertise carried out by the Out-Patient Clinic of Occupational Diseases, Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, 2005-2007].

BACKGROUND: The definition of "inability to work" and principles of medical certification of disabilities, determining the entitlement to an ill-health pension provision are regulated by law. However, the term ,,"inability to work" is not precisely defined and the standards of its assessment are not accurately formulated. This refers not only to the term "loosing ability to work to considerable degree", but also to the criteria of occupational qualifications. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the most common problems and mistakes in the medical certification that entitles to d

Occupational status among adult survivors following allo-SCT.

Being in work or the equivalent is an important goal after allo-SCT and is used as an indicator of recovery. The aim was to elucidate occupational status and factors associated with work among SCT survivors. Adults in working age with a haematological disease (n=177) were followed up within a median of 8 (range 28) years post allo-SCT. Predictors of not being in work at all or working part-time because of sick leave, disability pension or early old-age pension were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. At diagnosis, 82% of the participants were working full-time and 2% were on sick leav

Mortality and postcombat disorders: U.K. veterans of the Boer War and World War I.

This study seeks to investigate the mortality rates of U.K. servicemen with postcombat syndromes following the Boer War and World War I. Random samples of veterans awarded war pensions for either disordered action of the heart (DAH) or neurasthenia/shellshock were compared with gunshot wounded ex-servicemen as controls. The destruction of pension records has led to reliance on groups of the longest lived veterans, which diminishes their representative qualities. Study groups were matched by rank and level of disability. With the exception of DAH cases in World War I, no statistically significa

The value of cat ownership to elderly women living alone.

A survey of elderly women was carried out to discover their attitudes towards pet cats. The women were living in publicly-owned pensioner housing in two New Zealand cities. In one city cats were allowed in the pensioners' housing and in the other city they were not. Attitudes towards cats were more positive in the city where cats were allowed, and more positive if pensioners owned a cat, or wished to own one. As positive attitudes towards cats outweighed negative ones, the City Authority which had prohibited cats reversed its policy. There was conflicting evidence about the role of cats in red

Ageing on the job: How raising retirement age affects work accidents.

As populations age, many countries have increased the statutory retirement age to sustain pension systems and maintain labor supply. This article examines whether delayed retirement increases workplace accident risks, a potentially important but underexplored cost of pension reforms. We exploit the 2012 Italian pension reform - which sharply tightened eligibility requirements and abruptly raised the retirement age - to estimate its causal effects using administrative data on private-sector employees. Leveraging firm-level variation in exposure to the reform, we identify the impact of delayed r
