Localization and identification of root canal bacteria in clinically asymptomatic periapical pathosis.

Twenty-one teeth with clinically asymptomatic periapical pathosis (class 3) were extracted and the isolation, identification, and localization of bacteria in the root apex were examined. Mixtures involving several bacteria were isolated from more than 60% of the cases. Scanning electron microscopy revealed bacterial masses to be associated with the apical part of the root canal, but not with the area of apical foramen or on the surface of root apex. Our results indicate that the bacteria in class 3 cases may be derived from organisms which colonized before or during endodontic treatment, but n

[A case of peptostreptococcal meningitis associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma].

A very rare case of peptostreptococcal meningitis associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma was reported. A 25-year-old man was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital on November 6, 1984 with a few day's history of headache and low grade fever. On admission, he had high grade fever (39.2 degrees C) and tachycardia (110/min). There were no neurological deficits other than neck stiffness and Kernig's sign. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which was obtained through lumbar puncture showed watery clear appearance, white cell count of 32/3 mm3 (mononuclear: polymorphonuclear = 4:5), prote

Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in genital disease.

In a study of Gardnerella vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria in non-specific vaginitis (NSV) and other genital disease 89 patients attending a genital medicine clinic had vaginal samples examined for conventional pathogens and for quantitative analysis of G vaginalis and aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora. The overall incidence of G vaginalis was 20%; G vaginalis (mean concentration 7.0 log10/g of secretion) occurred predominantly in patients with NSV (57%) but also in sexual contacts of non-specific urethritis (NSU) (37.5%) and in patients with other conditions (11.8%). G vaginalis is theref

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with nasal polyposis.

Aspirates from 48 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses from patients who had nasal polyposis were processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was present in 46 (96%) specimens. Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present in 6 (13%) specimens, anaerobic bacteria alone in 18 (39%), and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in 22 (48%). There were 110 bacterial isolates (2.4 per specimen). Thirty-nine of the isolates were aerobic or facultative organisms (0.85 per specimen). The predominant aerobic or facultative organisms were: Staphylococcus aureus, microaerophilic streptoc

Finegoldia magna: a rare cause of necrotising fasciitis.

Necrotising fasciitis is a life-threatening condition characterised by inflammation, affecting the soft tissues, which spreads within a fascial plane. Skin changes can be delayed and can often go unnoticed. The condition arises from a bacterial infection, commonly being of polymicrobial aetiology. We describe an uncommon case of necrotising fasciitis caused by Finegoldia magna, an anaerobic coccus, in a 40-year-old patient with diabetes. F. magna is a Gram-positive anaerobic coccus, which was previously known as Peptostreptococcus magnus The bacteria is found in the normal flora of the urogeni

Microbiology of sinusitis.

Most sinus infections are viral, and only a small proportion develops a secondary bacterial infection. Rhinoviruses, influenza viruses, and parainfluenza viruses are the most common causes of sinusitis. The most common bacteria isolated from pediatric and adult patients with community-acquired acute purulent sinusitis are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes. Staphylococcus aureus and anaerobic bacteria (Prevotella and Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium and Peptostreptococcus spp.) are the main isolates in chronic sinusitis. Pseudomonas

On the use of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis approach for bacterial identification in endodontic infections.

Bacteria in infected root canals of teeth evincing chronic apical periodontitis lesions were identified by a polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) approach. DNA was extracted from root canal samples, and part of the 16S rRNA gene of all bacteria was amplified by PCR and separated by DGGE, generating banding patterns representative of the community structure. Twenty visible bands were cut out of the gel, re-amplified, and sequenced to provide identification. Sequencing analysis revealed the presence of both cultivable and as-yet-uncultivated species in the

Intra-abdominal, retroperitoneal, and visceral abscesses in children.

This review describes the microbiology, diagnosis, and management of intra-abdominal abscesses (including subphrenic, hepatic, splenic, and retroperitoneal abscesses) in children. They often occur as a complication of local or generalized peritonitis, commonly secondary to appendicitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and tubo-ovarian infection, surgery or trauma. The original infection generally occurs because of the entry of enteric microorganisms into the peritoneal cavity through a defect in the wall of the intestine or other viscus as a result of obstruction, infar

An immunohistological study of the localization of bacteria invading root pulpal walls of teeth with periapical lesions.

We immunohistologically examined the prevalence and localization of bacteria invading dentinal tubules of the roots of teeth with infected canals. Forty extracted teeth with apical lesions were selected and divided into two groups: a group of untreated teeth and a group of canal-enlarged teeth. The bacteria in the specimens were detected by Brown-Brenn stain and the labeled-streptavidin-biotin method with specific antisera for 16-bacteria. Seventy percent of the examined teeth showed bacteria invading the dentinal tubules of the roots. Fusobacterium nucleatum, Eubacterium alactolyticum, E. nod

[Successful treatment for descending necrotizing mediastinitis: a case report].

A 21-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of high fever, neck swelling, and dyspnea. She was diagnosed as descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) extended from odontogenic infection. On the day of admission, she underwent cervical drainage. Next day, the CT scan showed an abscess below the tracheal bifurcation and bilateral pleural effusion. Mediastinal drainage was performed through a right thoracotomy, and a left thoracic tube was inserted. Anaerobic Peptostreptococcus was found with bacteriological culture. After the mediastinal drainage, bilateral thoracic irrigation was

Laboratory diagnosis of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections.

Anaerobic organisms play a major role in pleuropulmonary infections. Clinical manifestations range from simple aspiration to acute, severe, necrotizing pneumonias to chronic infections, such as lung abscess and empyema. Implicated pathogens are usually of endogenous origin. Laboratory diagnosis of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections is based on recovering the etiological agent from clinical specimens. Appropriate specimens include pleuml fluid, transtracheal aspirates, transthoracic aspirates and fiberoptic bronchoscopic aspirates. Collection and transport of uncontaminated specimens is cruci

The relative lethality of intestinal bacteria for gnotobiotic rats with experimental intestinal strangulation.

In eight experiments utilizing 28 animals each, germfree rats with and without ischemically or hemorrhagically strangulated closed loop intestinal segments were contaminated with either one of four common intestinal anaerobic bacteria, or a combination of two or three bacteria previously found to be innocuous in pure culture. The results showed that: a) in pure culture, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius were innocuous; b) Fusobacterium necrophorum alone was a very lethal organism that produced intense, confluent, intraperitoneal, fibrous adhes

Bacteriotherapy for chronic relapsing Clostridium difficile diarrhoea in six patients.

Six patients with chronic relapsing diarrhoea caused by Clostridium difficile were treated with rectal instillation of homologous faeces (one patient) or a mixture of ten different facultatively aerobic and anaerobic bacteria diluted in sterile saline (five patients). The mixture led to a prompt loss of Cl difficile and its toxin from the stools and to bowel colonisation by Bacteroides sp, which had not been present in pre-treatment stool samples. Strains of Escherichia coli, Cl bifermentans, and Peptostreptococcus productus in the mixture inhibited the in-vitro growth of Cl difficile, which i

The presence of antibody-coated anaerobic bacteria in asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy.

Quantitative anaerobic culture of urine samples obtained from 593 pregnant women by suprapubic bladder aspiration was performed to establish the involvement of anaerobic bacteria in asymptomatic urinary tract infections. The fluorescent antibody (FA) test was applied to the sediments of bladder aspirates to determine the site of infection. Anaerobic bacteriuria (greater than or equal to 10(4) microorganisms/ml of urine) was found in 34 patients, of whom five were FA-positive. These anaerobes were identified as Lactobacillus minutus, Veillonella parvula (two patients). Clostridium putrefaciens,

Lactobacilli do not cause frequency and dysuria syndrome.

Mid-stream specimens (MSU) of urine were collected from 142 healthy women (pregnant and non-pregnant) and cultured for lactobacilli and other fastidious bacteria. The latter either require CO2 or are obligate anaerobes. Lactobacilli were present in counts of 10(4)/ml or more in 34.8% of the women, and in counts of 10(5)/ml or more in 20.2%. Besides lactobacilli, which were the bacteria most frequently isolated, anaerobic gram-positive cocci (peptococci and peptostreptococci) were often found. This flora is typical of that of the lower vagina, and none of these women had either symptoms of urin
