Does limited virucidal activity of biocides include duck hepatitis B virucidal action?

BACKGROUND: There is agreement that the infectivity assay with the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) is a suitable surrogate test to validate disinfectants for hepatitis B virucidal activity. However, since this test is not widely used, information is necessary whether disinfectants with limited virucidal activity also inactivate DHBV. In general, disinfectants with limited virucidal activity are used for skin and sensitive surfaces while agents with full activity are more aggressive. The present study compares the activity of five different biocides against DHBV and the classical test virus for l

Mature Listeria monocytogenes Biofilms Exhibit Reduced Susceptibility to Sanitizers - Relevance to the (Leafy Green) Fresh Food Supply Chain.

Salads and herbs are important for a healthy diet but during their processing and packaging, they may be exposed to environmental contamination from foodborne pathogens. Of particular concern is Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe, found ubiquitously in the environment. L. monocytogenes can survive and grow under harsh conditions such as refrigeration temperatures, low oxygen or nutrient concentrations, which is why it is a problem in the fresh food supply chain. Infection with L. monocytogenes can result in listeriosis, potentially fatal in immunocompromised patients

Validation of post-harvest antimicrobial interventions to control Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) on market hog carcass surfaces.

Although swine are less associated with STEC foodborne disease outbreaks, the potential for swine to serve as a source of STEC infections in human beings cannot be disregarded. This study compared eight USDA-approved antimicrobial intervention technologies to quantify their ability to reduce STEC contamination on market hog carcasses. Hogs were harvested to provide skin-on carcass sides, and eight sides (per three replications) were inoculated with a 7-strain STEC cocktail (ca. 5 log CFU/cm2 across all external and body cavity surfaces). Each side was randomly assigned to a final pre-chill was

A novel pre-oxidation method for elemental mercury removal utilizing a complex vaporized absorbent.

A novel semi-dry integrative method for elemental mercury (Hg(0)) removal has been proposed in this paper, in which Hg(0) was initially pre-oxidized by a vaporized liquid-phase complex absorbent (LCA) composed of a Fenton reagent, peracetic acid (CH3COOOH) and sodium chloride (NaCl), after which Hg(2+) was absorbed by the resultant Ca(OH)2. The experimental results indicated that CH3COOOH and NaCl were the best additives for Hg(0) oxidation. Among the influencing factors, the pH of the LCA and the adding rate of the LCA significantly affected the Hg(0) removal. The coexisting gases, SO2 and NO

On the use of an explicit chemical mechanism to dissect peroxy acetyl nitrate formation.

Peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) is a key component of photochemical smog and plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. Though it has been known that PAN is produced via reactions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), it is difficult to quantify the contributions of individual precursor species. Here we use an explicit photochemical model--Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) model--to dissect PAN formation and identify principal precursors, by analyzing measurements made in Beijing in summer 2008. PAN production was sensitive to both NOx and VOCs. Isoprene was th

Low Tenacity of Toxoplasma gondii Tachyzoites In Vitro.

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan, poses significant risks to public health due to its widespread distribution and potential for severe congenital and neurological complications. The fast-replicating tachyzoite stage is crucial for acute infection and laboratory studies, yet effective inactivation methods remain inadequately explored. This study evaluates various chemical and physical approaches to inactivate T. gondii tachyzoites in vitro. Using a combination of GFP fluorescence and viability assays, we demonstrated the complete inactivation of tachyzoites with ethanol (≥

Efficient activation of PAA by FeS for fast removal of pharmaceuticals: The dual role of sulfur species in regulating the reactive oxidized species.

As peracetic acid (PAA) is being increasingly used as an alternative disinfectant, efficient activation of PAA by low-cost and environmentally friendly catalysts over a wide pH range is potentially useful for simultaneous sterilization and pharmaceutical degradation in wastewater, such as hospital wastewater. In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) was successfully activated by low-cost and environmental-friendly FeS (25 mg/L) for efficient oxidative removal of three pharmaceuticals over a wide pH range (3.0∼9.0) as indicated by 80∼100% removal rate within 5 min. As expected, Fe(II) rather than su

Emerging biofilm formation and disinfectant susceptibility of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for various infections in humans and animals. It is known for its resistance to multiple antibiotics, particularly through the production of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs), and its ability to form biofilms that further complicate treatment. This study aimed to isolate and identify K. pneumoniae from animal and environmental samples and assess commercial disinfectants' effectiveness against K. pneumoniae isolates exhibiting ESBL-mediated resistance and biofilm-forming ability in poultry and equine farms in Giza Governorat

Sustained antimicrobial activity and reduced toxicity of oxidative biocides through biodegradable microparticles.

UNLABELLED: The spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens requires new treatments. Small molecule precursor compounds that produce oxidative biocides with well-established antimicrobial properties could provide a range of new therapeutic products to combat resistant infections. The aim of this study was to investigate a novel biomaterials-based approach for the manufacture, targeted delivery and controlled release of a peroxygen donor (sodium percarbonate) combined with an acetyl donor (tetraacetylethylenediamine) to deliver local antimicrobial activity via a dynamic equilibrium mixture of hydr

A sterilization method for decellularized xenogeneic cardiovascular scaffolds.

UNLABELLED: Decellularized xenogeneic scaffolds have shown promise to be employed as compatible and functional cardiovascular biomaterials. However, one of the main barriers to their clinical exploitation is the lack of appropriate sterilization procedures. This study investigated the efficiency of a two-step sterilization method, antibiotics/antimycotic (AA) cocktail and peracetic acid (PAA), on porcine and bovine decellularized pericardium. In order to assess the efficiency of the method, a sterilization assessment protocol was specifically designed, comprising: i) controlled contamination w

Comparison of peroxyacetic acid and acidified sodium chlorite at reducing natural microbial contamination on chicken meat pieces.

The spin-chill process at poultry processing plants involves the immersion of chicken carcasses in cold water (<5°C) often containing sodium hypochlorite which significantly contributes to the reduction of bacterial loads. Cutting carcasses into pieces, however, has been linked with increases in Campylobacter and Salmonella counts. Here, the efficacy of PAA and ASC on reducing bacteria on skin-on, bone-in thigh cuts was investigated. Three concentrations of ASC (60, 112, and 225 ppm) and PAA (50, 75, 100 ppm) were used. Thighs were dipped into sanitizer and tested for total viable bacterial co

Disinfectant-Based and Chlorinated Water Inactivation of Wild-Type Salmonella enterica Bacteriophages.

Oral phage therapy is a promising strategy for reducing harmful bacteria in broilers. However, it may lead to the spread of therapeutic phages in the farm environment, potentially increasing bacterial host tolerance. To determine the stability of novel Salmonella bacteriophages in chlorinated drinking water and their response to farm disinfectants, we evaluated virucidal activity using a quantitative suspension test in the presence of organic matter. A >4-log-reduction was achieved using oxidizing agents, organic acid- and surfactant-based (1:350, 2 min), as well as glutaraldehyde and benzalko

Disinfection of human skin allografts in tissue banking: a systematic review report.

The use of skin allografts to temporarily replace lost or damaged skin is practiced worldwide. Naturally occurring contamination can be present on skin or can be introduced at recovery or during processing. This contamination can pose a threat to allograft recipients. Bacterial culture and disinfection of allografts are mandated, but the specific practices and methodologies are not dictated by standards. A systematic review of literature from three databases found 12 research articles that evaluated bioburden reduction processes of skin grafts. The use of broad spectrum antibiotics and antifun

Simultaneous observation of atmospheric peroxyacetyl nitrate and ozone in the megacity of Shanghai, China: Regional transport and thermal decomposition.

Atmospheric peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and ozone (O3) are two typical indicators for photochemical pollution that have adverse effects on the ecosystem and human health. Observation networks for these pollutants have been expanding in developed regions of China, such as North China Plain (NCP) and Pearl River Delta (PRD), but are sparse in Yangtze River Delta (YRD), meaning their concentration and influencing factors remain poorly understood. Here, we performed a one-year measurement of atmospheric PAN, O3, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), nitrogen oxid

Hepatic jaundice in a colony of nude mice.

A colony of nude mice was maintained under controlled standards of care for 12 months, at which time a rapidly escalating liver disease developed in the animals, characterized by jaundice, emaciation, and rapid death. Histologically, the livers had swollen, vacuolated hepatic cells and increased numbers of enlarged Kupffer cells. Mouse hepatitis virus was not isolated from the livers of sick mice. Although the nature of the lesions suggested toxicity, efforts to reproduce the lesions by increased exposure to chemical compounds used for colony husbandry were unsuccessful. A definitive determina

Efficient degradation of sulfadiazine by UV-triggered electron transfer on oxalic acid-functionalized corn straw biochar for activating peroxyacetic acid: Performance, mechanism, and theoretical calculation.

A novel UV/oxalic acid functionalized corn straw biochar (OCBC)/peroxyacetic acid (PAA) system was built to degrade sulfadiazine from waters. 94.7 % of SDZ was removed within 30 min by UV/OCBC/PAA. The abundant surface functional groups and persistent free radicals (PFRs) on OCBC were responsible for these performances. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and other characterization analysis revealed, under UV irradiation, the addition of OCBC served as electron donor, which might promote the reaction of electrons with PAA. The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests indicated that R-O•,

Inactivation of Lactobacillus Bacteriophages by Dual Chemical Treatments.

Phage contamination is one of the significant problems in the food fermentation industry, which eventually causes economic losses to the industry. Here, we investigated the viability of Lactobacillus plantarum phage P1 and P2 using various biocides treatments (ethanol, isopropanol, sodium hypochlorite and peracetic acid). Results indicated that phage P1 and P2 could be completely inactivated by treatment with 75% ethanol for 5 min, followed by 400 ppm of sodium hypochlorite treatment for 5 min. Phage P2 could be completely inactivated in the reverse sequence, while 800 ppm of sodium hypochlori
