The Cleft palate-craniofacial journal : official publication of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association1994eng
Pre-speech in 35 children with clefts of the lip and palate or palate only were analyzed for place and manner of articulation. Transcriptions were made from tape recorded babbling sequences. Two children without clefts were used as reference. All of the children with clefts were treated according to a regimen of early surgical repair of the velum cleft and delayed closure of the cleft in the hard palate. The frequency of selected phonetic features was calculated. Correlations between phonetic/perceptual and functional and morphological factors were tested. Supraglottal articulation dominated a

Normal, borderline and abnormal EEG findings were investigated in 122 children with no evidence of active neurological or psychiatric disorder, or perceptual or behavioral alterations. All children had a normal IQ. Sixty-one children had a good academic achievement (Controls) and 61 were considered as learning disabled (LD). The great majority of the children had pathological antecedents considered as risk factors for brain damage. The main findings observed were: Abnormal signs were significantly more frequent in LD than in control children. Atypical high amplitude alpha, and abnormal focal p

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fat injections in the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The study involved 10 patients (6 adults aged 19-48 years and 4 children aged 5-13 years) with mild/moderate VPI who were injected with 3.5 to 8 mL of fat in the posterior, lateral pharyngeal walls and soft palate under general anaesthesia. A second fat-grafting procedure was performed in 2 patients to achieve further improvement. Nasoendoscopy revealed a reduction in the closure gap in all patients, and the perceptual evaluation demonstrated improved sp

Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is associated with well-documented alterations in reactive brain processing of stimuli or events, whereas little is known about proactive/anticipatory neural dynamics preceding and preparing for task execution. This study aimed to investigate both proactive and reactive brain control of PTSD patients during a cognitive task, using the event-related potential (ERP) method. Methods: Twenty-one PTSD patients were matched to thirty healthy controls. Proactive ERP components, such as the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), prefrontal Negativity (pN), and v

INTRODUCTION: College students use their voices at excessively loud intensities and long durations during college fests. The accumulative effect of vocally abusive behaviors in the presence of high ambient noise, poor vocal hygiene, and other environmental factors contribute significantly towards reducing vocal effectiveness in college students.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to study the effect of a vocally demanding situation (college Fest) on perceptual and objective voice features of college students.
METHODOLOGY: In this study, a total number of 27 undergraduate female students part

OBJECTIVE: Optimal timing of palatal repair is still subject of discussion. Although literature provides some evidence that palatal closure prior to 6 months positively influence speech outcome in children with clefts, only few studies verified this hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare articulation and resonance characteristics following early (≤6 months) and later (>6 months) palatal repair, performed using the Sommerlad technique.
METHODS: Comparison was made between 12 Ugandan children with isolated cleft (lip and) palate following early palatal repair (mean ag

Between 2006 and 2016 in a Tertiary Academic Center, 11 patients underwent phonomicrosurgery with tragal perichondrium graft placement in Reinke's space for the treatment of sulcus (Ford type 2) and vocal fold scar. A total of six patients out of 11 had an additional autologous fat implantation in order to improve the glottic closure. We evaluated the functional outcome using the Spanish validated version of the VHI- 30 before and 6 months after the surgery. We also measured the subjective appreciation of the obtained outcome, a perceptual voice evaluation using GRBAS scale, and changes in vid

OBJECTIVES: Sphincter pharyngoplasty is a commonly performed procedure for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency and is often indicated in patients with circular or coronal closure patterns of the velopharyngeal sphincter. The authors present a modified technique of sphincter pharyngoplasty (partially mucosalized palatal sphincter pharyngoplasty [PMPSP]) in which bilateral superiorly based myomucosal palatopharyngeal flaps were elevated (in a newly designed fashion) and inserted in the palate through preformed palatal tunnels.
METHODS: This case series included 14 patients (5 male, 9

The speech-language pathologist (SLP) plays an important role in the assessment and management of children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The SLP assesses speech sound production and oral nasal resonance and identifies the characteristics of nasal air emission to guide the clinical and surgical management of VPI. Clinical resonance evaluations typically include an oral motor exam, identification of nasal air emission, and analysis of the speech sound repertoire. Additional elements include perceptual assessment of intra-oral air pressure, the degree of hypernasality, and vocal loudne

PURPOSE: In this experiment, we investigated whether target type affects the retinal fixation location and stability in patients with bilateral central scotomas and, specifically, whether targets expected to perceptually fill in are imaged at or near the vestigial fovea.
METHODS: The retinal location and stability of fixation were measured using the Nidek MP-1 microperimeter in 12 patients with bilateral central scotomas for six types of fixation target, three expected to fill in and three that included letters. The approximate position of the vestigial fovea was delineated in 10 of the patie

Co-vibrations of the ventricular folds are a common finding in the clinical setting. It is not always obvious how much of the perceived voice change can be attributed to the presence of such vibrations. The aim of the present study was to describe laryngeal vibrations as observed by high-speed imaging in cases where ventricular fold vibrations had been observed. The findings at kymographic display of the recordings were correlated to perceptual measures and spectrographic observations. Two subjects, a 65-year-old man with chronic laryngitis and one vocally healthy man, were examined during pre

OBJECTIVES: These days, the main injection laryngoplasty technique is cricothyroid (CT) approach. However, patients who have previously undergone other neck treatments, such as thyroidectomy or neck dissection have distorted anatomical landmark makes this approach more difficult. The aim of this study is to determined the efficiency of transcartilaginous (TC) approah as compared with CT approach for unilateral vocal fold paralysis patients, especially for previously neck treated patients.
METHODS: From March 2005 to February 2008, 137 consecutive injection laryngoplasties were performed in pa

OBJECTIVES: Resonance problems in hearing impaired (HI) individuals have been described as aspects of nasality. However, there are limitations in being able to explain the range of resonance problems. Therefore, this study suggests a perceptual rating that will effectively explain the characteristics of resonance problems in HI individuals.
METHODS: Nasalance scores were obtained from 32 subjects in each of HI and normal hearing (NH) groups using a nasometer. The subjects were categorized into groups based on normal and abnormal nasalance ranges. The abnormal nasalance range group was further
