High-frequency percussive ventilation as a lifesaving intervention in a pediatric case of life-threatening asthma: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute asthma exacerbation requiring mechanical ventilation, referred to as life-threatening asthma, presents significant challenges due to elevated airway resistance, dynamic hyperinflation, and impaired gas exchange. Conventional mechanical ventilation may be insufficient in these cases, necessitating alternative strategies. High-frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) offers a promising approach by combining improved oxygenation and ventilation with effective secretion clearance. CASE STUDY: An 11-year-old male with a history of asthma and eczema presented to the emerge

The effect of percussion massage therapy on the recovery of delayed onset muscle soreness in physically active young men-a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common condition among physically active individuals, often resulting in reduced performance and discomfort. Although percussive massage treatment (PMT) is widely used as a recovery tool, there is limited evidence supporting its efficacy compared to traditional methods such as static stretching. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of PMT on recovery from DOMS in physically active young men. METHODS: Thirty physically active male college students were randomized into three groups: static stretching (SS) group, a short-duration PMT (S-PMT)

Harmonization of lateral fluid-percussion injury model production and post-injury monitoring in a preclinical multicenter biomarker discovery study on post-traumatic epileptogenesis.

Multi-center preclinical studies can facilitate the discovery of biomarkers of antiepileptogenesis and thus facilitate the diagnosis and treatment development of patients at risk of developing post-traumatic epilepsy. However, these studies are often limited by the difficulty in harmonizing experimental protocols between laboratories. Here, we assess whether the production of traumatic brain injury (TBI) using the lateral fluid-percussion injury (FPI) in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (12 weeks at the time of injury) was harmonized between three laboratories - located in the University of East

A novel wireless optical technique for quantitative evaluation of cerebral perfusion pressure in a fluid percussion animal model of traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) calculated by mean arterial pressure (MAP) minus intracranial pressure (ICP) is related to blood flow into the brain and reflects cerebral ischemia and oxygenation indirectly. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can assess cerebral ischemia and hypoxia non-invasively and has been widely used in neuroscience. However, the correlation between CPP and NIRS, and its potential application in traumatic brain injury, has seldom been investigated. METHODS: We used a novel wireless NIRS system and commercial ICP and MAP devices to assess the trauma to rat br

Genetic and histologic evidence implicates role of inflammation in traumatic brain injury-induced apoptosis in the rat cerebral cortex following moderate fluid percussion injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes massive brain damage. However, the secondary injury and temporal sequence of events with multiple mechanisms after the insult has not been elucidated. Here, we examined the occurrence of apoptosis and a causal relationship between inflammation and apoptosis in the TBI brain. Following a lateral moderate fluid percussion injury model of TBI in adult rats, microarray analyses detected apparent changes in the expression levels of apoptosis-related genes which revealed time-dependent expression patterns for 23 genes in the lateral cortex. The upregulated 23 gene

Fluid percussion trauma to the placental trophoblast triggers multifaceted injury mechanisms, including mitochondrial stress response, immune dysregulation, cytoskeletal, endothelial, and angiogenic signaling cascades.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is the leading cause of non-obstetrical maternal death and is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including placental abruption, preterm birth, and stillbirth. Although placental injury is a known consequence of maternal trauma, understanding its direct effect on trophoblast function remains limited. This study aims to examine the cellular effects of mechanical trauma on human trophoblasts in vitro. METHODS: Human trophoblast cells (HTR-8/SVneo) were cultured and exposed to controlled mechanical trauma using a fluid percussion injury (FPI) model, previously validated in

Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation for obstructive atelectasis caused by bronchial cast-like clots after pulmonary hemorrhage in a child with congenital heart disease.

Pulmonary hemorrhage may cause persistent airway obstruction due to retained intrapulmonary blood and clot material, resulting in obstructive atelectasis that may be difficult to resolve with conventional airway-clearance strategies. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy with congenital heart disease who developed extensive obstructive atelectasis associated with bronchial cast-like clots after right pulmonary hemorrhage during angioplasty. Chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, prone positioning, and repeated bronchoscopic airway clearance did not improve aeration. Intrapulmonary percussive
