BACKGROUND: We present a case report of ovarian carcinoma with pericardial metastasis causing echocardiographic tamponade.
CASE SUMMARY: A woman in her 70s with breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1), B7-H4 positive, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma with metastasis to the lungs presented with subacute dyspnea. Echocardiogram showed a large, circumferential pericardial effusion of 2.5 cm with tamponade physiology. Emergent pericardiocentesis yielded 420 mL of serosanguinous fluid. Cytology of the pericardial fluid was consistent with metastatic adenocarcinoma of ovarian origin. The patient pursued ho

We report a patient who presented to our hospital with unusual symptoms of non-specific complaints and uncontrolled hypertension. Acute cardiac tamponade was suspected from cardiomegaly on routine chest x-ray and confirmed with an echocardiogram. Analysis of the pericardial fluid and other laboratory data ruled out all the common causes except for hypothyroidism as a cause of cardiac tamponade. Tamponade results from increased intrapericardial pressure caused by the accumulation of pericardial fluid. The rapidity of fluid accumulation is a greater factor in the development of tamponade than ab

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of computed tomography (CT) attenuation values in the characterization of pericardial effusion.
METHODS: This study consisted of 96 patients with pericardial effusion who underwent pericardiocentesis. For further diagnostic evaluation of pericardial effusion, all the patients were assessed by thorax CT. CT attenuation values were measured from at least 5 different areas of pericardial fluid by specifying the largest region of interest. The average of these measurements was computed and considered as the CT attenuation value of

Infants with Down Syndrome (DS) are at risk of developing a transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM). TAM is characterised by increased circulating blast cells but usually self-limiting. DS patients with TAM sometimes show fetal hydrops and effusion in body cavities, but the mechanism remains unclear. We report here a case of infant with DS who had pericardial effusion, TAM, and eosinophilia. In her pericardial effusion, white blood cell count was 6.0 × 103/µL, 41% of which were eosinophils. After administration of prednisolone, pericardial effusion gradually decreased, and TAM and eosinophilia i

The normal pericardial sac contains up to 50 mL of fluid, which consists of a plasma ultrafiltrate. Anything greater constitutes a pathologic effusion. The curvilinear pressure-volume relationship of the pericardial sac dictates hemodynamic consequences of a pericardial effusion and is responsible for rapidly accumulating fluid that causes cardiac tamponade. A variety of diseases and complications cause pericardial effusion. The most common are idiopathic pericarditis, cancer, connective tissue disorders, and hemorrhage. Management of pericardial effusion is dictated by whether tamponade is pr

BACKGROUND: Pericardial effusion occurs frequently in patients with hypothyroidism and is typically mild. Although extremely uncommon, massive pericardial effusion can compromise hemodynamics and cause cardiac tamponade. Reduced plasma volume has been reported to induce cardiac tamponade in massive pericardial effusion, but to our knowledge, hypovolemia-induced cardiac tamponade has not been reported in cases of hypothyroidism with pericardial effusion.
OBJECTIVES: We describe a case of hypothyroidism with cardiac tamponade due to an uncommon cause that, to our knowledge, has never been repor

A 13-year-old Oldenburg mare was evaluated for lethargy and signs of mild colic. Pericardial tamponade caused by fibrinoeffusive pericarditis was diagnosed. Cytologic and biochemical evaluation of pericardial fluid was consistent with a septic effusion. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, the cause of pigeon fever, was identified by bacteriologic culture of pericardial fluid. Drainage and lavage of the pericardial sac, local (intrapericardial) and systemic antimicrobial treatment, and subsequent corticosteroid treatment resulted in a successful outcome in this horse. To the authors' knowledge,

Pericardial effusion complicated by cardiac tamponade is a medical emergency. Large pericardial effusion and tamponade are rare in childhood. Tuberculosis remains a major cause of pericardial effusion in endemic areas. A 16-year-old adolescent with no significant past history was admitted to the medical unit of the Buea Regional hospital in the South West region of Cameroon for heart failure after presenting with abdominal distension, shortness of breath and fever of two weeks duration. Echocardiographic study during admission revealed a large pericardial effusion (27mm in thickness) with echo

Pericardial effusion is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity. It can be associated with various cardiac and non-cardiac disorders. Dense deposit disease (DDD) is a rare kidney disease caused by uncontrolled activation of the alternative complement pathway. We are reporting a seven-year-old male child who was diagnosed to have DDD approved by renal biopsy and presented with shortness of breath, cough, and fever. Chest X-ray displayed cardiomegaly. Thereafter, echocardiography showed massive pericardial effusion and left ventricle compression with a risk for cardiac tampon

The pericardial space is a biologically active inflammatory and cellular microenvironment with growing relevance to cardiac disease and surgical practice. Pericardial fluid contains bioactive mediators that frequently exceed systemic concentrations, and the anatomical proximity of this compartment to the myocardium highlights its potential role in cardiac pathology and post-surgical complications. Despite increasing recognition of its importance, the immune biology of the pericardial space remains incompletely characterized, and significant gaps persist in our understanding of its molecular an

BACKGROUND: This article provides an up-to-date overview of pericardial effusion in oncological practice and a guidance on its management. Furthermore, it addresses the question of when malignancy should be suspected in case of newly diagnosed pericardial effusion.
MAIN BODY: Cancer-related pericardial effusion is commonly the result of localization of lung and breast cancer, melanoma, or lymphoma to the pericardium via direct invasion, lymphatic dissemination, or hematogenous spread. Several cancer therapies may also cause pericardial effusion, most often during or shortly after administrati

AIM: To differentiate malignant from benign pericardial effusion with diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of diffusion-weighted MRI of 41 patients (29 men and 12 women; mean 39 years) with pericardial effusion. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of pericardial fluid, and associated pericardial mass or pleural effusion was calculated. ADC of pericardial fluid was calculated by two observers and correlated with cytological analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curves and Bland-Altman plots were used.
RESULTS: There was signi

This report reviews morphologic aspects of pericardial heart disease. A morphologic classification for this condition is presented. An ideal classification of pericardial heart disease obviously would take into account clinical, etiologic and morphologic features of this condition but a single classification combining these 3 components is lacking. Pericardial heart disease is relatively uncommon clinically and when present at necropsy it usually had not been recognized during life. The term "pericarditis" is inaccurate because most pericardial diseases are noninflammatory in nature. Morpholog

BACKGROUND: Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening condition that occurs when an abnormal amount of fluid accumulates in the pericardial sac and impedes the cardiac filling process. Although extremely rare, haematological diseases have the potential to trigger an extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) process within the pericardium, resulting in a substantial build-up of pericardial effusion.
CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a 29-year-old male previously diagnosed with primary myelofibrosis (PMF), who presented to the emergency unit with cardiac tamponade. An emergent pericardiocentesis pro

A previously healthy young child presented with a large pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. The chest radiography was key to the recognition of the pericardial effusion. Cytologic examination of the pericardial fluid ultimately established the diagnosis of acute monoblastic leukemia in the absence of associated clinical or laboratory findings. The pericardial fluid was vital for leukemic cell classification because the bone marrow has hypocellular and non-diagnostic. This presentation of acute monoblastic leukemia is very rare, and in the three previously reported pediatric cases has b

Chylopericardium is a rare clinical condition in which chyle leaks into the pericardial space owing to lymphatic system derangement. It can be idiopathic or occur secondarily to another clinical condition. Optimal management is accomplished through surgical intervention to impede leaks and drain fluid. In this report, we discuss an initially asymptomatic patient with a pre-employment chest radiograph that revealed cardiomegaly. An echocardiogram revealed pericardial effusion. Medical workup was unable to determine secondary causes for effusion. Pericardiocentesis revealed milky-colored fluid w

Pancreatico-pericardial fistula is an extremely rare complication of chronic pancreatitis. We present a case of a 58-year-old man who presented with syncope. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed a pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology. Pericardiocentesis and pericardial fluid analysis demonstrated a lipase level of 2321 U/L. Subsequently, an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed, confirming the presence of a pancreatico-pericardial fistula (PPF) from the distal body of the pancreas. A pancreatic duct stent was placed across the duct disruption on two sep

A 7-year, 6-month-old, female neutered, Pug dog presented with lethargy, hyporexia, polydipsia, abdominal distension, and dyspnea. Point-of-care ultrasonography identified tricavitary effusions and cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis yielded 83 mL of sanguineous scintillating fluid. Clinical examination, bloodwork, echocardiography, electrocardiography, thoracic and abdominal computed tomography scans, and pericardial fluid analysis including culture and sensitivity did not identify any cardiovascular, endocrine, neoplastic, or infectious causes of the pericardial effusion. Pericardial fluid
