Heterogeneous shifts in cancer research topics during the COVID-19 era: evidence from topic modeling of oncology journals.

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted healthcare systems and may have influenced the direction of cancer research, particularly epidemiology and prevention research. However, empirical evidence regarding changes in research topics during the COVID-19 era remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed 8,694 articles published from 2016 to 2025 in 3 journals using PubMed bibliographic data. Latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling identified 10 thematic clusters. Differences in topic distributions between the pre-pandemic (2016-2019) and post-pandemic-onset (2020-2025)

Adrenal Insufficiency Secondary to Abrupt Dose Reduction of Topical Corticosteroid Therapy after Starting Brodalumab for Psoriasis: A Case Report.

The risk of treating psoriasis with biologic drugs in patients treated with topical corticosteroids over prolonged periods requires careful attention to their underlying adrenal insufficiency because the development of adrenal insufficiency symptoms frequently occurs after cessation of the topical corticosteroids: the dose and duration of topical corticosteroid therapy and etretinate use correlate with risk. In this case report, we present a 65-year-old man with psoriatic erythroderma who developed arthralgia, joint pain, muscle pain, fatigue, and headache after starting brodalumab and a reduc

Topical minoxidil fortified with finasteride: An account of maintenance of hair density after replacing oral finasteride.

BACKGROUND: Finasteride acts by reducing dihydrotestosterone levels, thereby inhibiting miniaturization of hair follicles in patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Oral finasteride is associated with side effects such as decreased libido, sexual dysfunction, and gynecomastia. AIM: The aim of the following study is to assess the efficacy of maintaining hair growth with 5% topical minoxidil fortified with 0.1% finasteride in patients with AGA after initial treatment with 5% topical minoxidil and oral finasteride for two years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective assessment was done in 5

Endophthalmitis following cataract surgery: the role of prophylactic postoperative chloramphenicol eye drops.

PURPOSE: The main aim of the study was to assess whether omitting prophylactic postoperative topical antibiotics (chloramphenicol) influenced the risk of developing endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all patients who had cataract surgery at our outpatient cataract unit between 2004 and 2011. Postoperative topical antibiotics (chloramphenicol) were omitted from 2007 onwards, as was the first postoperative day review. Patients with a diagnosis of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery were extracted, and the rate of postoperative endoph

Intravenous MELAtonin for prevention of Postoperative Agitation and Emergence Delirium in children (MELA-PAED): A protocol and statistical analysis plan for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Emergence agitation and delirium in children remain a common clinical challenge in the post-anesthetic care unit. Preoperative oral melatonin has been suggested as an effective preventive drug with a favorable safety profile. The oral bioavailability of melatonin, however, is low. Therefore, the MELA-PAED trial aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of intraoperative intravenous melatonin for the prevention of emergence agitation in pediatric surgical patients. METHODS: MELA-PAED is a randomized, double-blind, parallel two-arm, multi-center, superiority trial comparing intrav

Professor Röntgen and "Jack the Ripper": Were X-rays Discovered on November 8?

BACKGROUND: November 8, 1895, is widely considered the date when Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923) supposedly first noticed the glimmer that led to the discovery of X-rays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Henry Jackson Wells Dam (1856-1906), an American playwright and journalist with a checkered biography, forced his way in - through blatant dishonesty - to obtain an interview with Röntgen at the end of January 1896. His report based on this interview was published in the April issue of two illustrated monthly periodicals in New York City and London. Dam indicated that Röntgen discovered the X-rays o

Ocular surface squamous neoplasia in an immunosuppressed patient with atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

We describe a patient with severe atopic dermatitis and keratoconjunctivitis, who was prescribed both systemic and topical ciclosporin and who developed ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). To provide additional information on the incidence of the association between topical ciclosporin use and OSSN, we counted the total prescriptions for topical ciclosporin issued in our hospital between 2003 and 2006 (804 patients) and, for the same period, we reviewed the records of patients with OSSN for a history of treatment with ciclosporin or a history of atopy. No other case of OSSN in a patient

Adolf von Strümpell: a key yet neglected protagonist of neurology.

German internist and neurologist Adolf von Strümpell (1853-1925) was a leading figure in German neurosciences around 1900 and helped to establish neurology as a discipline in its own right. He made contributions that were crucial to the development of the subject and in many cases his were the first descriptions of complex diseases such as Bechterew disease (ankylosing spondylitis), primary lateral sclerosis, hereditary spastic paraplegia, and syphilis. His Textbook of Special Pathology and Therapy of Internal Diseases, published in English as Text-book of Medicine for Students and Practitione

Safety of topical corticosteroids in pregnancy: a population-based cohort study.

Topical corticosteroids may be indicated in pregnant women with skin conditions, but their safety in pregnancy is unclear. We used the UK General Practice Research Database to conduct a population-based cohort study to investigate whether maternal exposure to topical corticosteroids results in adverse pregnancy outcomes. We identified 35,503 pregnant women prescribed topical corticosteroids during the period from 85 days before last menstrual period (LMP) to delivery or fetal death and 48,630 unexposed women. We found no associations of maternal exposure to topical corticosteroids with orofaci
