Importance of preserved periosteum around jugular foramen neurinomas for functional outcome of lower cranial nerves: anatomic and clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of jugular foramen (JF) neurinomas remains controversial because of their radicality in relation to periosteal sheath structures. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the particular meningeal structures of the JF with the aim of helping to eliminate surgical complications of the lower cranial nerves (LCNs). METHODS: We sectioned 6 JFs and examined histological sections using Masson trichrome stain. A consecutive series of 25 patients with JF neurinomas was also analyzed, and the MIB-1 index of each excised tumor was determined. RESULTS: In the JF, meningeal dura disappeared at

Elevated calcitonin gene-related peptide expression through prostaglandin E2-EP4 receptor pathway in promoting proliferative periosteum formation in primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.

BACKGROUND: Periosteosis is an imaging hallmark of primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (PHO). Increased level of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is the pathogenesis of PHO. PGE2 has been shown to bind its EP4 receptor in sensory nerves to stimulate bone formation. Sensory neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), richer in the periosteum, has been revealed to promote osteogenic differentiation of periosteum-derived stem cells (PDSCs) and contributed to periosteum proliferation at peripheral cortical sites. The study hypothesized that CGRP might have a role in regulating proliferative peri

Enhancement of bone volume in guided bone augmentation by cell transplants derived from periosteum: an experimental study in rabbit calvarium bone.

Bone morphology is genetically encoded and it is usually difficult to change its structure without invasive surgery. We have tried to stimulate bone augmentation by a combination of guided bone regeneration techniques and cell transplants with collagen scaffolds for the suitable skeletal framework. In vitro-expanded tibia periosteum cells were used to promote osteogenesis with collagen scaffolds and titanium (Ti) or poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) caps as barriers to create a space facing connective tissue under calvarium skin. This approach was assessed in the defective skull bone of a rabbit model

Tibial periosteum distraction for the treatment of lower extremity varicose vein ulcers combined with deep vein thrombosis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Lower extremity venous ulcers are highly prevalent in elderly populations. These chronic wounds often persist for extended periods, heal poorly, and frequently recur, severely compromising patients' quality of life while creating considerable socioeconomic burdens. When complicated by deep vein thrombosis, they further restrict viable treatment options. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old man had experienced left lower extremity varicose veins for 3 months, accompanied by a recurrent 3 × 4 cm fascial-penetrating ulcer, chronic pain, superficial venous dilation, and cutaneous hyperpigme

An enhanced tri-layer bionic periosteum with gradient structure loaded by mineralized collagen for guided bone regeneration and in-situ repair.

Severe fracture non-union often accompanied by damaged or even absent periosteum remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel tri-layer bionic periosteum with gradient structure and mineralized collagen (MC) mimics natural periosteum for in-situ repair and bone regeneration. The construct with ultrasonic polylactic acid as the loose outer fibrous layer (UPLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) as the intermediate barrier layer (PCL-M), and poly(ε-caprolactone)/MC as the inner osteoblastic layer (PM) was prepared. The physicochemical properties of layers were investigated. UPLA/PCL-M/PM exhi

Case series of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia unfulfilling neurofibromatosis type 1 diagnosis: 21% with somatic NF1 haploinsufficiency in the periosteum.

Up to 84% of patients with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) present with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) (NF1-CPT). However, the etiology of CPT not fulfilling the NIH diagnostic criteria for NF1 (non-NF1-CPT) is not well understood. Here, we collected the periosteum tissue from the pseudarthrosis (PA) site of 43 non-NF1-CPT patients and six patients with NF1-CPT, together with the blood or oral specimen of trios (probands and unaffected parents). [Promotion of bone healing through clinical application of autologous periosteum derived stem cells in a case of atrophic non-union].

This case report describes the application of periosteum-derived mesenchymal stem cells in a patient with atrophic non-union of the distal femur after correction osteotomy. While biomechanical treatment devices for various bone defects are available in abundance, biological promoters for clinical application in situations of critical bone healing are still scarce. We showed radiographically that cultivated autologous periosteal bone precursor cells on a three-dimensional matrix can promote bone healing in a defect where numerous established methods had failed to lead to consolidation. Bone morphogenetic protein-mediated interaction of periosteum and diaphysis. Citric acid and other factors influencing the generation of parosteal bone.

In rabbits, after long-bone growth is complete and the cambium layer regresses, mesenchymal-type cells with embryonic potential (competence) for bone development persist in the adventitial layer of periosteum. These cells are not determined osteoprogenitor cells (stem cells) because bone tissue differentiation does not occur when adult periosteum is transplanted into a heterotopic site. In this respect, adventitial cells differ from bone marrow stroma cells. In a parosteal orthotopic site in the space between the adult periosteum and diaphysis, implants of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and

Clinical outcomes of Nice knot-assisted locking plate for preserving periosteum internal fixation in comminuted clavicle fractures: A retrospective study.

IntroductionClavicular fractures, particularly comminuted fractures, are common injuries that can affect shoulder function and upper limb mobility. The management of these fractures, especially using surgical approaches and fixation methods, remains a key area of clinical focus. Preserving the periosteum during surgery may improve fracture healing and reduce complications. This study explored the clinical efficacy of a periosteum-preserving surgical technique combined with a Nice knot-assisted locking plate for treating comminuted clavicular fractures.MethodsA total of 85 patients with comminu

In vivo bone formation in silk fibroin and chitosan blend scaffolds via ectopically grafted periosteum as a cell source: a pilot study.

Reconstruction of a critical size bone defect in the head and neck after trauma or tumor resection remains challenging. While certain defects, such as isolated orbital floor fractures, may be reconstructed with alloplastic biomaterials, larger defects or those involving load bearing bones usually require autologous tissue reconstruction. Vascularized bone free flaps remain the gold standard for large bone defects of the head and neck. These are generally lengthy, complicated, multi-step procedures that require subspecialty expertise to assure optimal outcomes.1 Invariably any procedure where a

Cervical Spine Reconstruction With Vascularized Osteoadipofascial Fibular Flap and Periosteum Extension After Chordoma Resection and Adjuvant Proton Therapy: A Case Report.

Cervical spine reconstruction is essential following en bloc tumor resections, particularly in defects exceeding four centimeters. Traditional mechanical solutions or non-vascularized grafts are often suboptimal, with complications such as non-union, infections, and instability. The vascularized osteoadipofascial fibular flap offers a durable alternative with structural and biological benefits. We present the case of a 55-year-old woman with an 8-month history of cervicobrachialgia and left upper limb paresis. Imaging revealed a 7-cm lesion spanning C4-T1 with foraminal infiltration, and histo

Biomimetic vascularized adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells bone-periosteum graft enhances angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a male rabbit spine fusion model.

AIMS: Several artificial bone grafts have been developed but fail to achieve anticipated osteogenesis due to their insufficient neovascularization capacity and periosteum support. This study aimed to develop a vascularized bone-periosteum construct (VBPC) to provide better angiogenesis and osteogenesis for bone regeneration. METHODS: A total of 24 male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups according to the experimental materials. Allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) were cultured and seeded evenly in the collagen/chitosan sheet to form cell sheet as perio

Development of bone regeneration strategies using human periosteum-derived osteoblasts and oxygen-releasing microparticles in mandibular osteomyelitis model of miniature pig.

Hypoxia and limited vascularization inhibit bone growth and recovery after surgical debridement to treat osteomyelitis. Similarly, despite significant efforts to create functional tissue-engineered organs, clinical success is often hindered by insufficient oxygen diffusion and poor vascularization. To overcome these shortcomings, we previously used the oxygen carrier perfluorooctane (PFO) to develop PFO emulsion-loaded hollow microparticles (PFO-HPs). PFO-HPs act as a local oxygen source that increase cell viability and maintains the osteogenic differentiation potency of human periosteum-deriv
