Crosstalk between peripheral immunity and central nervous system in Alzheimer's disease.

The significance of peripheral immunity in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's diseases (AD) has been recognized. Brain-infiltrated peripheral immune components transporting across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) may reshape the central immune environment. However, mechanisms of how these components open the BBB for AD occurrence and development and correlations between peripheral and central immunity have not been fully explored. Herein, we formulate a hypothesis whereby peripheral immunity as a critical factor allows AD to progress. Peripheral central immune cell crosstalk is assoc

Peripheral nervous system electrodiagnostic abnormalities in predominantly Hispanic Multiple Sclerosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nervous system (PNS) abnormalities in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have been reported in case reports and small case series over the past several decades. Little is known, however, about the prevalence of electrodiagnostic abnormalities in patients with MS, including not only demyelinating neuropathies such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) but also axonal peripheral neuropathy and sympathetic dysfunction. METHODS: This is an observational, cross-sectional study with the objective of identifying the prevalence of the electrodiagnostic abnorm

New era of optogenetics: from the central to peripheral nervous system.

Optogenetics has recently gained recognition as a biological technique to control the activity of cells using light stimulation. Many studies have applied optogenetics to cell lines in the central nervous system because it has the potential to elucidate neural circuits, treat neurological diseases and promote nerve regeneration. There have been fewer studies on the application of optogenetics in the peripheral nervous system. This review introduces the basic principles and approaches of optogenetics and summarizes the physiology and mechanism of opsins and how the technology enables bidirectio

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma
with Peripheral Nerve Involvement:
Case Report.

A 50-year-old man presented with dizziness and hearing disturbance in the right ear. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-enhanced mass lesion in the right cerebellopontine (CP) angle that appeared to originate in the cerebellum. A surgical specimen obtained at the subtotal resection with craniotomy revealed a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). During the three courses of chemotherapy with high-dose methotrexate (MTX) with leucovorin rescue, he developed a right abducens palsy, left oculomotor palsy, left facial palsy, right trigeminal sensory disturbance, and paraparesis. KCC3 axonopathy: neuropathological features in the central and peripheral nervous system.

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum (HMSN/ACC) is an autosomal recessive disease of the central and peripheral nervous system that presents as early-onset polyneuropathy. Patients are hypotonic and areflexic from birth, with abnormal facial features and atrophic muscles. Progressive peripheral neuropathy eventually confines them to a wheelchair in the second decade of life, and death occurs by the fourth decade. We here define the neuropathologic features of the disease in autopsy tissues from eight cases. Both developmental and neurodegenera

Autonomic and peripheral nervous system function in acute tick-borne encephalitis.

OBJECTIVES: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an emerging flaviviral zoonosis in Central and Eastern Europe. TBE can present as meningitis, meningoencephalitis, or meningoencephalomyelitis. Dysfunction of the autonomic (ANS) and peripheral motoric and sensory nervous system (PNS) might contribute to acute and long-term complications. We aimed to examine, whether the ANS and PNS are affected in acute TBE. METHODS: Fourteen patients with acute TBE, 17 with diabetic polyneuropathy (d-PNP), and 30 healthy controls (HC) were examined in our single-center, prospective study. ANS and PNS function was

Lower urinary tract dysfunction in patients with peripheral nervous system lesions.

The prevalence of lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction in peripheral nervous system (PNS) disorders is larger than in comparable control populations. This is particularly true for polyneuropathies with autonomic nervous system involvement, and for localized lesions with LUT innervation. LUT symptoms may be the guide to the diagnosis of processes localized in the lumbosacral spinal canal (as in cauda equina syndrome), and in the pelvis. Typical LUT dysfunctions (LUTD) caused by PNS involvement include bladder and sphincter hypoactivity with poor emptying, and incontinence. Paradoxically, bladd

POEMS syndrome with peripheral and central nervous system demyelination: case report.

INTRODUCTION: POEMS syndrome is a rare, atypical plasma cell proliferative disorder. Predominantly motor chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy and monoclonal plasma cell disease are the major clinical features of POEMS syndrome. Demyelinating lesions of the central nervous system have been reported only in 2 patients with POEMS syndrome up to now. CASE REPORT: A 71-year-old man was investigated for numbness, burning sensation, and weakness of the lower extremities. He was found to have hypertrichosis, white nails, and multiple hemangiomas in the lower extremities. Neurological examination reve

[Peripheral nervous system involvement in the course of herpes virus infections].

The herpes viruses are associated with both central and pe-ripheral nervous system complications. Patients with symptoms suggestive of herpes viruses infections coexisting with peri-phe-ral nervous system manifestations, especially Guillain-Barré syndrome, mononeuropathy, plexopathy and radiculopathy, should be screened for the herpes viruses infections in the differential diagnosis. The purpose of this review is to discuss the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of the neuropathies in the course of herpes viruses infections.

Central and peripheral nervous system complications following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

Although graft vs. host disease (GvHD) is a frequent complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT), involvement of the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS, respectively) has not been demonstrated conclusively. Here, we report of a patient who, following allogeneic BMT for lymphoblastic T-cell lymphoma, suffered a syndrome characterized by self-remitting cerebellar and pyramidal signs associated with a progressive involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Clinical course and laboratory findings correlated with relapses of systemic GvDH, thus suggesting t

[Multifocal motor neuropathy: an individualized disease of the peripheral nervous system].

Multifocal motor neuropathy is a peripheral nervous system disease described among chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies. It is characterized according to both clinical criteria, including chronic asymmetric and multifocal deficit which starts and remains prominent in the upper limbs, and electrophysiological criteria, including persistent multifocal motor conduction blocks in motor nerves. High titers of serum antiganglioside GM1 antibodies are discovered in nearly 40% of cases. Steroids and plasma exchange are not efficient. High doses of intravenous immunoglobulins (i.v.Ig) im

Peripheral nervous system involvement in human and experimental chronic American trypanosomiasis.

An electrophysiological and histological study of the muscle and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) was carried out in chronic human American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) and in an experimental Chagas' disease (Chd) mouse model. Altogether 995 patients with chronic Chd and 261 mice, experimentally infected with RA and CA-I parasite strains, were investigated. Results were compared with matched controls. Techniques employed in humans were: clinical assessment, conventional electromyography (EMG), estimated number of motor units, motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities, repetitive ne

Malignant, predominantly lymphocytic thymoma with central and peripheral nervous system metastases.

Histologic features of an invasive mediastinal tumor found in a 25-year-old woman fulfilled the accepted criteria for diagnosis of predominantly lymphocytic thymoma. Histochemical and cell marker studies indicated that the neoplasm contained a preponderance of T lymphocytes. After surgical debulking of the mass, aggressive radiotherapy and chemotherapy eradicated all evidence of thoracic disease. However, six months after the initial diagnosis, rapid development of cranial nerve and brainstem metastases--without detectable recurrent disease elsewhere--resulted in the patient's death. Autopsy e

Dynorphin immunocytochemical localization in brain and peripheral nervous system: preliminary studies.

Using antisera specific for the opioid peptide dynorphin, we have carried out immunocytochemical studies of the distribution in rat brain and periphery. In the central nervous system, cells that stain positively for dynorphin are found in the supraoptic nucleus, with less-well-stained cells in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. Few positive fibers were detected in brain, suggesting problems with fixation and preservation of antigenicity. In pituitary no staining was seen in the anterior and intermediate lobes but heavy staining was detected in the posterior lobe. In the guinea pi

Selective response of rat peripheral sympathetic nervous system to various stimuli.

1. We utilized the induction of tyrosine hydroxylase, a catecholamine-synthesizing enzyme, in sympathetic ganglia and adrenal medullae to explore the central and peripheral mechanisms through which choline, various environmental stresses, and drugs that alter blood pressure or central neurotransmission affect various portions of the sympathetic nervous system. Animals received each treatment chronically, and enzyme activity was measured in the superior cervical, stellate, and coeliac ganglia and in the adrenal medullae.2. Choline administration increased tyrosine hydroxylase activity in all fo

Peripheral nervous system involvement in Parkinson's disease: Peripheral neuropathy, neuromuscular junction dysfunction, and clinical implications.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has long been recognized as a central nervous system disorder, yet growing evidence indicates that the peripheral nervous system (PNS) plays a clinically relevant role in disease initiation, progression and heterogeneity. Peripheral sensory, autonomic, and motor pathways, including the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and enteric circuits, show PD-associated structural and functional abnormalities that contribute to pain and symptoms, orthostatic and visceral dysfunction, gait instability, weakness, and reduced neuromuscular restoration. This review provides a conceptually
