CY0-to-CY1 Conversion in Gastric Cancer Peritoneal Lavage Cytology: Clinical Significance and Improved Cell Retention by Et + PA Fixation.

Peritoneal lavage cytology (PLC) is important for staging gastric cancer, but intraoperative assessment may miss malignant cells because only a limited portion of the specimen can be examined. We retrospectively analyzed 287 patients who underwent gastrectomy with intraoperative PLC between 2014 and 2022. Cytologic status was classified as CY-, CY0-to-CY1 conversion, or CY+ based on intraoperative and permanent cytologic findings. Of 287 patients, 251 were CY-, 10 showed CY0-to-CY1 conversion, and 26 were CY+ on intraoperative assessment, resulting in 36 final CY1 cases. Patients with CY0-to-C

Impact of Tumor-Derived DNA Testing in Peritoneal Lavage of Pancreatic Cancer Patients with and Without Occult Intra-Abdominal Metastases.

BACKGROUND: The fractional abundance of tumor-derived DNA in body fluids depends on the metastatic sites and the degree of expansion. We aimed to assess the clinical significance of tumor-derived DNA testing in the peritoneal lavage of patients with pancreatic cancer. METHODS: The prevalence and abundance of tumor-derived DNA was assessed in 204 subjects with ascites by peritoneal lavage (AS) and the evaluable paired plasma (PL) from 149 pancreatic cancer patients undergoing abdominal exploration. Genetic profiles were evaluated by next-generation sequencing, and prognostic impact was assesse

Intraperitoneal Lavage with Crocus sativus Prevents Postoperative-Induced Peritoneal Adhesion in a Rat Model: Evidence from Animal and Cellular Studies.

Postoperative peritoneal adhesions are considered the major complication following abdominal surgeries. The primary clinical complications of peritoneal adhesion are intestinal obstruction, infertility, pelvic pain, and postoperative mortality. In this study, regarding the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Crocus sativus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of Crocus sativus on the prevention of postsurgical-induced peritoneal adhesion. Male Wistar-Albino rats were used to investigate the preventive effects of C. sativus extract (0.5%, 0.25% and 0.125% w/v) against postsurgical-indu

Study of murine experimental Jorge Lobo's disease by analysis of peritoneal lavage cells and footpad histopathology: early versus chronic lesions.

The murine model of Jorge Lobo's disease is characterized by histological alterations similar to those seen in human disease, including a large number of viable fungi. This study evaluated the immune response of mice with early and late macroscopic lesions (5 and 13 months post-inoculation [p.i.], respectively) by the analysis of peritoneal lavage cells and footpad (FP) histology. The FP of mice were inoculated with 1 × 10(6) fungi (viability index of 41%). At 5 and 13 months p.i., the granuloma mainly consisted of macrophages and multinucleated giant cells, but a larger number of neutrophils

Evaluating for acute mesenteric ischemia in critically ill patients: diagnostic peritoneal lavage is associated with reduced operative intervention and mortality.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia among intensive care unit (ICU) patients continues to be difficult and carries high mortality, and yet, it is essential that it be made expeditiously such that lifesaving operative intervention can be offered. A recent study suggested that computed tomography (CT) scan delays operative intervention. Thus, we hypothesized that diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL), a rapidly performed bedside procedure of established high sensitivity, is associated with reduced operative intervention, time to operative intervention, and mortality. METHODS: We

Effect of peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin on the expression of NF-κB and TNF-α in multiple organs of rats with severe acute pancreatitis.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin on the expression levels of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in multiple organs of rats with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following groups: Sham-operated (C), SAP model (SAP), saline lavage (SL), intravenous ulinastatin (IU) and peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin (UL). The SAP model was induced by the retrograde infusion of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliopancreatic ducts of the rats. Intraperitoneal lavage or injec

Efficacy and safety of strong acid electrolyzed water for peritoneal lavage to prevent surgical site infection in patients with perforated appendicitis.

PURPOSE: Our previous experimental study of perforated peritonitis in rats proved that peritoneal lavage with strong acid electrolyzed water (SAEW) has no adverse effects, reduces the bacteria count in the ascitic fluid more effectively than saline, and increases the survival rate significantly. Thus, we conducted a randomized controlled study, applying SAEW in the treatment of perforated appendicitis in children. METHODS: Forty-four patients, aged 3-14 years, were randomly divided into two groups: Group S (n = 20), in which the peritoneal cavity was lavaged with 100 ml/kg saline and the woun

Long-Term Results After Laparoscopic Lavage for Perforated Diverticulitis Purulent Peritonitis in Sweden: A Population-Based Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare long-term outcomes after laparoscopic lavage with resection surgery for perforated diverticulitis, Hinchey grade III as practiced in Sweden for 3 years. BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic lavage has been studied in 3 randomized controlled trials. Long-term results indicate that additional surgery and a remaining stoma are less common after lavage compared with resection, but data from routine care and larger cohorts are needed to get a more complete picture. METHODS: LapLav is a national cohort study with nearly complete coverage of all patients operated in Sweden between 2016 an

Prognostic Impact of Potentially Curative Resection for Synchronous Peritoneal Carcinomatosis with Lavage Cytology Positivity in Colorectal Cancer: A Retrospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Although curative resection for synchronous peritoneal carcinomatosis has been reported to improve prognosis, cases with positive intraoperative lavage cytology have not been reported. In this study, we investigated the prognostic value of potentially curative resection based on colorectal cancer and lavage cytology positivity in patients with synchronous peritoneal carcinomatosis. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 72 patients who underwent intraoperative lavage cytology and one-stage potentially curative resection of primary and metastatic lesions (lavage cytology-positive, n

Diagnosis of significant abdominal trauma after road traffic accidents: preliminary results of a multicentre clinical trial comparing minilaparoscopy with peritoneal lavage.

A prospective multicentre study comparing the value of the recently introduced minilaparoscopy with peritoneal lavage in patients with abdominal trauma is in progress. To date 55 patients with blunt abdominal trauma have been entered into the study. Following initial resuscitation, 26 were randomised to peritoneal lavage and 29 to minilaparoscopy performed under intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia. The two groups were comparable with respect to age, sex, incidence of multiple injuries and mortality (2 patients in the lavage group and 1 in the minilaparoscopy group). A negative test was

Exosomal hsa-let-7g-3p and hsa-miR-10395-3p derived from peritoneal lavage predict peritoneal metastasis and the efficacy of neoadjuvant intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of advanced gastric cancer (GC) invading the gastric serosa remains poor, mainly owing to high incidence of peritoneal recurrence. Patients with peritoneal metastases are often treated with neoadjuvant intraperitoneal and systemic chemotherapies (NIPS). Good responders to NIPS often undergo conversion gastrectomy. This study aims to explore biomarkers predicting the occurrence of peritoneal metastasis (PM) and evaluating the efficacy of NIPS in GC patients. METHODS: We collected six peritoneal lavage (PL) samples from two patients with PM, two without PM, and two wit
