Preventing transmission among operating room staff during COVID-19 pandemic: the role of the Aerosol Box and other personal protective equipment.

The COVID-19 pandemic is highly challenging for the operating room staff and healthcare workers in emergency departments. SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA beta-coronavirus that primarily targets the human respiratory system, with fever, cough, myalgia, and pneumonia as the most common manifestations. However, since SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in stool specimens much more attention has been paid to gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea. Furthermore, the expression of ACE-2 receptors in absorptive enterocytes from ileum and colon suggests that

Comparing consequences of using two different definitions for body regions for the improvement of personal protective equipment for powered two-wheelers.

Objective: Various definitions and uses of the term body region can be found in the literature. A definition of body regions using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) codes not strictly aligned with AIS chapters was developed for use in the European Commission-funded PIONEERS project (Protective Innovations of New Equipment for Enhanced Rider Safety). This work aims to examine the consequences of differently defined body regions on injury priority ranking using the percentage of patients showing at least moderate injury severity (AIS 2+) per regarded body region. Methods: Three different crash i

The association between self-perceived proficiency of personal protective equipment and objective performance: An observational study during a bioterrorism simulation drill.

BACKGROUND: The recent Ebola virus disease outbreak emphasized the potential misuse of personal protective equipment (PPE) by health care workers (HCWs) during such an event. We aimed to compare self-perceived proficiency of PPE use and objective performance, and identify predictors of low compliance and PPE misuse. METHODS: An observational study combined with subjective questionnaires were carried out during a bioterror simulation drill. Forty-two observers evaluated performance under PPE. Mistakes were recorded and graded using a structured observational format and were correlated with the

Job-Specific Lead Exposure Gradients and Personal Protective Equipment Paradox in Informal Occupational Settings: A Case-Control Study from The Gambia.

Occupational lead exposure remains a significant public health concern in low- and middle-income countries, yet within-industry exposure gradients are poorly characterized. This case-control study assessed job-specific blood lead level (BLL) gradients and personal protective equipment (PPE) use patterns among 145 auto repair workers and 68 healthcare controls in The Gambia. BLLs were measured using LeadCare II analyzers. Exposed workers had significantly higher BLLs than controls (median: 7.40 vs. 5.80 μg/dL; p < 0.001). A striking 5.3-fold gradient was observed across specialties: battery rep

Personal Protective Equipment Use by Dairy Farmworkers Exposed to Cows Infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Viruses - Colorado, 2024.

The risk for transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus from dairy cows to humans is currently low; however, personal protective equipment (PPE) use during work activities on dairy farms has not been well described. PPE use can protect farmworkers when they are working with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1)-infected cows. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) offered PPE to all Colorado farms before or during an A(H5N1) outbreak in cows in 2024. CDPHE surveyed 83 dairy workers from three fa
