Personalized Lumbar Vertebrae Modeling for Dynamic Assessment of Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Clinical assessment of idiopathic scoliosis (IS) patients primarily relies on static imaging techniques. Dynamic digital human (DDH) can provide comprehensive spatio-temporal information for dynamic assessment of the scoliotic spine in IS patients comparing with static imaging techniques, such as X-ray for general assessment and computed tomography (CT) for surgical planning. The lumbar vertebrae exhibit greater morphological variability than the thoracic region when subjected to different postures and mechanical loads, making them particularly important for dynamic assessment. Therefore, a pe

OncoFlow: A multiplexed microfluidic platform for personalized drug sensitivity assessment.

While biomarker-guided treatments and NGS-based approaches are refining precision medicine, they are not universally applicable. The gap between the genomic characterization of tumors and their functional behavior is becoming increasingly evident. There is an escalating demand for functional assays that can customize cancer treatments for individual patients and bridge this gap. We have developed OncoFlow, an integrated microfluidic platform that automates viability assays. This platform customizes treatment options by assessing the functional responses of a patient's tumor cells to a specific

Assessing Health-Related Values: Imperative for Person-Centered Care.

Person-centered care, a gold standard in serious illness care and palliative care, emphasizes the importance of understanding a patient's personhood and values. Nurses are uniquely suited to provide high-quality, person-centered care and to support patients as they communicate their worries, goals, hopes for the future, and sources of support. By assessing and understanding an individual's health-related values, nurses are better able to complete their nursing responsibilities, advocate for their patients, and confidently encourage shared decision-making. Nurses have strong communication skill

Impact of the biopsychosocial model of disability on the medicolegal assessment of personal injury.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this paper was to determine whether the medicolegal assessment of injured and disabled persons is based on the biopsychosocial model of disability proposed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. METHODS: We searched for the word disability and other keywords, occurring alone or in combination as well as the meaning given to the word "disability" in two Belgian legal databases (JURA and STRADALEX) for the period from 1960 to 2020. RESULTS: The use of the term disability has increased over time, more so from 2001 to 2010, in are

Surfactant status assessment and personalized therapy for surfactant deficiency or dysfunction.

Surfactant is a pivotal neonatal drug used both for respiratory distress syndrome due to surfactant deficiency and for more complex surfactant dysfunctions (such as in case of neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome). Despite its importance, indications for surfactant therapy are often based on oversimplified criteria. Lung biology and modern monitoring provide several diagnostic tools to assess the patient surfactant status and they can be used for a personalized surfactant therapy. This is desirable to improve the efficacy of surfactant treatment and reduce associated costs and side eff

Self-Assessed Personality Traits and Adherence to the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has forced all countries affected by it to introduce quarantine and isolation to prevent the spread of the virus, as well as masking and distancing. Not everyone is equally willing to follow the rules related to limit the extent of the coronavirus epidemic. This might be connected with personality traits, especially openness, positive attitude, and optimism. Materials and Methods: An online survey was created and completed by participants in April-May 2020. Self-assessment of personality traits and adherence to lockdown

Atherogenic Risk Assessment among Persons Living in Rural Uganda.

Background. Hypertension and dyslipidemia are independent risk factors for coronary heart disease and commonly coexist. Cardiovascular risk can be reliably predicted using lipid ratios such as the atherogenic index, a useful prognostic parameter for guiding timely interventions. Objective. We assessed the cardiovascular risk profile based on the atherogenic index of residents within a rural Ugandan cohort. Methods. In 2011, a population based survey was conducted among 7507 participants. Sociodemographic characteristics, physical measurements (blood pressure, weight, height, and waist and hip

Toward a dynamic model of psychological assessment: Implications for personalized care.

OBJECTIVE: The present article proposes a general framework and a set of specific methodological steps for conducting person-specific dynamic assessments, which yield information about syndrome structures and states that can be used to provide actionable information for the formulation of personalized interventions. It is proposed that researchers should (a) determine the relevant constituent inputs for a diagnostic system; (b) measure these inputs with as much detail as possible; (c) assess the correlational structure of system inputs via factor-analytic methods within individuals; and (d) su

Assessment of mobility status and risk of mobility disability in older persons.

The ability to remain mobile is an essential aspect of quality of life and is critical for the preservation of independence in old age. One of the cornerstones of comprehensive geriatric assessment is the evaluation of functional and mobility status, because it provides clinicians pivotal information on overall health status, quality of life, needs for formal and informal care, and short and long term prognosis. As a consequence, many assessment tools have been developed and proposed for clinical use, including simple self-report measures assessing basic abilities and more complex and challeng

Memory loss in persons with HIV/AIDS: assessment and strategies for coping.

Although the incidence of HIV-related dementia has decreased significantly in the era of contemporary HAART, the prevalence of memory and cognitive symptoms remains steady in persons with HIV/AIDS. Recognition of which memory symptoms may be specifically related to HIV infection is becoming more and more challenging because of the increased survival and aging of those living with HIV disease. Therefore, numerous age-related causes of memory impairment may need to be ruled out. Depression can often result in subjective memory symptoms but rarely causes objective cognitive impairment. Because of

Assessment of feeding and mealtime behavior problems in persons with mental retardation.

Feeding and mealtime behavior problems are commonly observed among individuals with developmental disabilities. These problems include, but are not limited to, food refusal, food selectivity, mealtime aggression, rumination, pica, and insufficient feeding skills. Difficulties of this type can be associated with life-threatening consequences of other serious health-related problems. Because of the nature of these problems and the lack or accurate client self-reporting, an interdisciplinary assessment in addition to a thorough behavioral assessment is recommended to ensure the best quality of ca

Medical evaluation of persons with mental retardation referred for psychiatric assessment.

Many people with developmental disabilities and "challenging behaviors" present to primary care physicians, internists, or general psychiatrists for assessment and treatment. These clinicians seek to provide the comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment necessary for successful treatment, but may encounter interference from funding agencies. Epidemiologic data on medical comorbidity in persons with developmental disabilities with a primarily "behavioral" presentation may assist in facilitating these assessments. A total of 1135 people with mental retardation referred for mental health assessmen

Factor structure of the Motivation Assessment Scale for persons with mental retardation.

The rating scale used to assess the motivators of maladaptive behaviors in persons with mental retardation was the Motivation Assessment Scale. In the current study, we validated the factor structure of the scale on a sample of 118 subjects with predominately severe or profound mental retardation. They exhibited deviant behaviors such as self-injurious and tantrum behavior, aggression, and passivity. The results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation validated the assumptions of the developers of the scale that the motivators could be grouped into sensory, escape, attention, and tangible
