Advanced theory of mind in children with mild intellectual disability and deaf or hard of hearing children: A two-year longitudinal study in middle childhood.

The present study investigates the development of advanced theory of mind (AToM) among typically developing (TD) children, children with mild intellectual disability (MID), and deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children. The 2-year longitudinal study comprised three waves and included a large sample of children from Poland in middle childhood aged around 7.5-9.5 years (N = 779; M = 7.7, SD = 0.92 at wave 1). The analysis of children's understanding of second-order false belief and the Faux-Pas Recognition Test showed that TD children outperformed children with MID and DHH children on both measures

Positive experiences associated with acquired hearing loss, Ménière's disease, and tinnitus: a review.

OBJECTIVE: It is common to study and understand how various illness and disorders result in negative consequences. However, positive experiences have been reported in a range of disabling conditions including multiple sclerosis, heart disease, physical and sensory disabilities. This paper presents a literature review of studies that have explored positive experiences associated with acquired hearing loss, Ménière's disease, and tinnitus. DESIGN: A review of the peer reviewed scientific literature. STUDY SAMPLE: A comprehensive search strategy identified 15 articles after applying inclusion c

"It's beyond enough": teachers' experiences and perspectives of rehabilitation inclusion for working with deaf and hard of hearing children in rural areas of China.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) are a heterogeneous population and may present with their unique needs that set them apart from general disability group. Current studies have focused on the parents' experiences of DHH, lacking evidence on teachers' experiences and perspectives of rehabilitation inclusion in Chinese rural context. Thus, this study aimed to identify key themes from teachers' experiences regarding the challenges ("bad" things) and successes ("good" things) in educating students with DHH, while also exploring their perspectives

Deaf on the Prairie: Combining Traditional and Contemporary Learning Theories.

This single case study concerns an 11-year-old girl, Agata, who recently moved to a rural community in the United States from the Philippines. Agata is profoundly deaf, has had no access to amplification, and has had very limited access to language and formal school. The journey through the next year, including the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Agata's language and literacy skills blossom at an unexpected rate. The study examines the how and why of Agata's progress by using multiple sources of both quantitative and qualitative data. A conceptual framework of both direct instruction theory (Engelmann

Hearing loss and the risk of disability pension in Norway: the Hunt Study.

AIM: The purpose was to explore the possible associations between measured hearing thresholds and work related disability pension granted for other medical reasons in a Norwegian population. METHOD: This study included 25,537 persons from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) aged 20-54 years at baseline in HUNT1 (1984-1986) who also participated in the follow-up study 11 years later, HUNT2 (1995-1997) that included a hearing examination. Logistic regression analyses of disability pension granted up to 1996 or earlier in life were conducted for men and women separately and in two age strata.

The Role of Social Capital in the Transition to Postsecondary Education of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Social capital can positively influence students' postsecondary aspirations and their postschool transitions to higher education and employment. Educators, families, and young people themselves can play an active role in generating and developing adolescents' social capital. A targeted focus on developing robust social capital could play an important role in the transition planning and support provided to secondary students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and contribute to their success in postsecondary education and employment. A qualitative study gaining the perspectives of DHH young a

Framing Sign Language as a Health Need in Canadian and International Policy.

Although in Canada, hearing screening and early intervention are presented as a health need, we question whether young deaf and hard of hearing children's access to language is adequately supported by public health and children's services. The Ontario Infant Hearing Program has the stated mandate of supporting the language development of deaf and hard of hearing infants and young children. However, this program presents parents with early intervention service options involving either spoken or signed language, but not both together. This policy effectively restricts access to sign language lea

[Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA)].

Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) achieve optimal acoustic coupling by means of direct bone conduction via an osseointegrated percutaneous titanium implant. Currently this system has a record of over 30 years of clinical application and reliability. Patients with bilateral hearing loss with air-bone gaps will benefit from bilateral BAHA fitting. Likewise, unilateral conductive hearing loss with normal hearing on the other side can be treated with a BAHA. New developments in this field include the BAHA Intenso and also novel implant systems, such as the Epiplating system by Medicon, the alpha s

Centering Lived Experience: Inclusive Pediatric Care for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Their Families.

The diversity of experiences of children and individuals who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) is broad. Nearly 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 children in the United States, and globally up to 20 out of every 1,000 children, are born DHH, with increasing prevalence as children grow. With proper support that centers early language access, positive identity development, and learning from individuals with lived experience-either as caregivers or as adults who are DHH-all children who are DHH can thrive. Due to the varied needs and backgrounds of children who are DHH, individualized, family-centered,

Deaf role-models for Deaf children in hearing families: a scoping review.

The use of Deaf role-models (DRMs) with Deaf children born into hearing families is a practice aimed at improving outcomes for Deaf children, yet there is little peer-reviewed research available to influence future direction of such. This scoping review directs attention to available research on DRMs as a socio-linguistic and cultural viewpoint for balancing a predominantly audiological approach for early intervention for Deaf children. Systematic database searches initially yielded 132 records, of which seven articles were included in this scoping review. Findings are presented as five themes

Hallucinations in Hearing Impairment: How Informed Are Clinicians?

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Patients with hearing impairment (HI) may experience hearing sounds without external sources, ranging from random meaningless noises (tinnitus) to music and other auditory hallucinations (AHs) with meaningful qualities. To ensure appropriate assessment and management, clinicians need to be aware of these phenomena. However, sensory impairment studies have shown that such clinical awareness is low. STUDY DESIGN: An online survey was conducted investigating awareness of AHs among clinicians and their opinions about these hallucinations. STUDY RESULTS: In total, 125 c

Establishing childhood disability clinics may help reduce the prevalence of disability among children in Africa: A viewpoint.

Globally, there are about a billion people comprising of about 95 million children who experience disability. The number of people in Africa living with disability is about 80 million people; out of which 10%-15% are children of school age. The causes of disability among these children include epilepsy, vision loss, or hearing loss, cerebral palsy, poliomyelitis, tetanus, cerebrospinal meningitis and malaria. However, these causes of disability are preventable and can be managed with proper care. The aim of this article is to propose the establishment of childhood disability clinics in Africa

[Hearing loss among handicapped persons].

Deafness appears to have a various impact on daily life, depending on the severity of the hearing loss. More often, mild and medium hearing loss are quickly rehabilited with hearing aids. Severe and profound hearing losses require a multidisciplinary evaluation, to determine the best treatment (speech therapy, cochlear implantation). Audiologic evaluation can be completed by handicap inventory specific for hearing loss, in order to appreciate the individual impact. Recently in France (2005) a law has demonstrated the determination of State's institutions to improve the daily life with handicap

What deaf readers can teach us about science of reading: "all means all" isn't an equity framework for literacy.

The Science of Reading (SoR), recently popularized across media, academic, legislative, community, and educational platforms, continues to evolve in its meanings and applications. Perceptions of SoR range from being a multifaceted construct that incorporates various perspectives and some evidence, as articulated by Goodwin (in Heller, 2022. Taking stock of the science of reading: A conversation with Amanda Goodwin. Phi Delta Kappan, 103(8), 32-36), to a confined set of principles, as proposed in the IMSE Journal, and to a precise body of research, as highlighted by The Reading League in their

Measuring speech intelligibility with deaf and hard-of-hearing children: A systematic review.

There is great variability in the ways in which the speech intelligibility of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children who use spoken language as part, or all, of their communication system is measured. This systematic review examined the measures and methods that have been used when examining the speech intelligibility of children who are DHH and the characteristics of these measures and methods. A systematic database search was conducted of CENTRAL; CINAHL; Cochrane; ERIC; Joanna Briggs; Linguistics, Language and Behavior Abstracts; Medline; Scopus; and Web of Science databases, as well as

Longitudinal Models of Reading and Mathematics Achievement in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students often experience systemic barriers to academic success, especially low expectations of what they know and can do. Longitudinal data analysis is critical to understanding how academic achievement for DHH students progresses over time and where they may need additional support on their academic journey to achieve at the level of their hearing peers. This study provides an analysis of NWEA MAP® Growth™ data from grades 2 to 8 across seven reading and mathematics domains over a period of 5 years. Results indicate that both DHH and hearing students continue t

Impact of communication modality on caregiver ratings for deaf and hard of hearing children.

PURPOSE: Literature on children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) suggests overall increased rates of difficulties in emotional/behavioral and adaptive functioning. However, limitations of this literature include the failure to integrate issues unique to the experience of children who are DHH, such as home and school communication modalities and the consistency of modalities across settings. METHOD: This study examined de-identified data from a clinical database. Data included caregiver ratings of emotional/behavioral and adaptive functioning in a diverse sample of clinically referred chi

Lived Experience: Deaf Professionals' Stories of Resilience and Risks.

Navigating a phonocentric and audistic society can be challenging for Deaf people, yet some of them adapt and exhibit resilience. Although there is a plethora of resilience studies, Deaf people's narratives are largely unexplored. This phenomenological study explored from a Deaf cultural-linguistic lens 10 Deaf professionals who use American Sign Language in the United States and their observation of other Deaf people's lived experience. The study focused particularly on their experiences in overcoming significant barriers in their lives and the factors that strengthen Deaf people's resilience
