Access to assistive technology for people with intellectual disabilities: a systematic review to identify barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organisation has launched a programme to promote Global Cooperation on Assistive Technology. Its aim is to increase access to high-quality affordable assistive products (AP) for everybody in need. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) are a specific group that could benefit from AP, but use less AP compared to their non-intellectual disabled peers. METHOD: A systematic literature search was carried out to identify barriers and potential facilitators for access to AP for people with ID globally. The search strategy terms were 'Intellectual Disability' and 'Ass

Behavioral interventions to reduce the pica of persons with developmental disabilities.

The consumption of nonfood items (i.e., pica) frequently occurs in persons with developmental disabilities. Pica may result in the puncture or blockage of the digestive tract, infestation by gastrointestinal parasites, and can interfere with an individual's daily learning, occupational performance, and quality of life. Twenty-six published studies have examined the efficacy of behavioral-intervention packages (e.g., differential reinforcement of other behavior, noncontingent attention, or overcorrection) on the pica of persons with developmental disabilities. This article reviews those studies

A comprehensive sexual health care program for educable intellectually disabled adolescent girls: protocol for a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Protection and promotion of sexual health is of great importance for educable intellectually disabled adolescent girls; since they are prone to high risk sexual vulnerabilities and consequences, such as unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Although the rights of intellectually disabled adolescents have been emphasized through the recent years, their sexual health care is still a challenge for parents, teachers, caregivers, and service providers. This study aims to present a comprehensive sexual health care program for educabl

Assessing the loneliness of workers with mental retardation.

This study was designed to determine whether a reliable instrument could be developed to measure the loneliness experienced by workers with mental retardation. In addition, supervisors were asked to rate subjects on loneliness and four other behavioral subtypes in order to determine whether there was a relation between these ratings and the loneliness questionnaire. Three groups of subjects were assessed: persons with mild, moderate, and severe mental retardation. Results indicated that the Worker Loneliness Questionnaire was a reliable instrument for use with persons with mild and moderate me

Personality disorder diagnoses in UK Autistic people: Evidence from a matched cohort study.

Clinical accounts and cohort studies suggest that Autistic people are disproportionately likely to be diagnosed with personality disorder. We conducted a cohort study of adults diagnosed Autistic drawn from the IQVIA Medical Research Database, with follow-up from 1 January 2000 to 16 January 2019. We included a comparison group without diagnosed autism, matched (1:10) by age, sex and primary care practice. We included 22,112 Autistic adults, of whom 6437 (29.1%) had a diagnosis of intellectual disability. Median age was 20.36 (interquartile range: 18.0-28.5), and 16,881 (76.3%) were men. The r

Changes in the self-rated well-being of people who move from congregated settings to personalized arrangements and group home placements.

A natural experiment contrasted the self-rated well-being of people with intellectual disabilities ( n = 75) and those with enduring mental health problems ( n = 44) after they moved to new accommodation and support options, while others remained in congregated settings or living in the family home. Most support staff also provided well-being ratings. In personalized arrangements, personal well-being was significantly higher than in congregated settings; particularly for people with intellectual disability who had higher support needs compared to people with mental health problems. Moving to a

Exploring Media Portrayals of Individuals With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Considering past evidence highlighting the role of media portrayal in shaping community attitudes towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), we analyzed depictions of IDD in seven television shows and three movies. Characters with IDD were coded based on categories representing (a) their attributes (demographic, disability-related, and personality), (b) the salience of IDD and character with IDD, (c) treatment by other characters, and (d) quality of life. The majority of the characters were White and male, and persons with IDD played characters with visible disabili

Adenocarcinoma of the lung in Down syndrome: first clinical report.

Lung cancer is rare in persons with Down syndrome, and the clinical presentation of the disease has not been described in adults with intellectual disability. We report the first detailed clinical observation of a 33-year-old man with Down syndrome who developed an adenocarcinoma of the lung 30 years after an acute lymphoblastic leukemia in infancy. Despite advanced disease at initial presentation and extensive tumor spreading during the course of the disease, he presented with unusually mild symptoms. The scarcity of lung cancer in people with intellectual disability, and particularly those w

The CRPD and mental health law reform in Scotland.

Scotland's mental health and capacity legislation and its implementation is underpinned by European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) informed principles, and such legislation and its implementation has remained largely ECHR compliant. It is designed to protect individuals' autonomy from inappropriate and disproportionate nonconsensual intrusions but its scope is largely limited to this. However, since the legislation was enacted at the start of the twenty first century the UK subsequently ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) which requires the law and r

Supporting the Goal of Shared Citizenship.

The shared citizenship paradigm envisions, requires, and supports the engagement and full participation of people with disabilities as equal, respected, valued, participating, and contributing members of all aspects of society. The goals of shared citizenship are to enhance human dignity and autonomy, facilitate human endeavor, and maximize human engagement. This article describes how the goals of shared citizenship can be supported through a greater focus on systemic changes in research, policy, and practice that seeks to advance change across ecological systems and align the goals and princi

Attainments of severely mentally retarded adolescents by aetiology.

Piagetian cognitive level, language abilities, adaptive behaviour and graphic skills were assessed in three groups of adolescents with severe learning difficulties: Down's syndrome (DS), congenital cerebral palsy (CP) and unknown origin (NSP). Results were compared with assessments made seven years earlier. A wide range of scores was observed in each group. Medians of the DS and NSP groups were similar and generally were significantly higher than those of the CP group. When the number and severity of other impairments and disabilities (HDCP) was taken into account, group averages of attainment

[Neurotic and neurosis-like disorders in the school maladaptation of children with retardation of mental development].

Sixty-six schoolchildren aged 6 to 11 attending community schools suffered from various types of psychophysical infantilism and encephalopathic forms (in the cerebrasthenia and psycho-organic syndrome background) of mental retardation. The decompensation of the residual organic cerebral insufficiency with enhancement of neurosis-like and cerebrasthenic disorders resulting from increased mental load was the first stage of these children disadaptation to the school demands. At the 2nd stage, as the self-esteem lowered and negative attitude of other schoolchildren arose, the neurotic disorders em

The stigma of intellectual disability in Spain: a nationally representative survey.

BACKGROUND: Stigma towards people with intellectual disability affects various aspects of their lives, including access to employment, housing, health and social care services. Furthermore, this stigma reduces their social opportunities and is even reflected in laws that diminish their autonomy. Due to the practical significance of this issue, the aim of this research is to explore for the first time the social stigma associated with intellectual disability in a representative sample of the Spanish population. METHOD: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive study was conducted, involving a
