Biological monitoring for pesticide absorption.

This paper reviews the development of biological monitoring as a method of assessing absorption of pesticides during occupational exposure. An approach to human volunteer studies to estimate the relationship between exposure to pesticides and excretion of metabolites is described and practical aspects of applying biological monitoring to field studies are considered. Case studies are used to illustrate some of the pitfalls of extrapolating from animals to man and to demonstrate the importance of human volunteer studies in establishing a sound basis for biological monitoring for pesticides.

Decontaminating pesticide protective clothing.

The review of recent work on the mechanisms of soil removal from textiles assists in understanding decontamination of pesticide protective clothing. The current work provides explanatory conclusions about residue retention as a basis of making recommendations for the most effective decontamination procedures. A caution about generalizations: Some pesticides produce very idiosyncratic responses to decontamination. An example is the paraquat/salt response. Other pesticides exhibit noticeable and unique responses to a highly alkaline medium (carbaryl), or to bleach (chlorpyrifos), or are quickly

[Pesticide-induced pulmonary fibrosis].

Pesticide-induced lung fibrosis are very rare. Only the acute paraquat-fibrosis achieved clinical significance. Clinic, pathogenesis and therapy of this disease will be described in the main features. The so-called "Vineyard sprayer's lung" was observed up to now only in Portugal. This illness will be caused by longterm exposure in viniculture against "Bordeaux mixture" a solution of copper sulphate and slaked lime. Causuistries in the literature indicate that further pesticides especially organophosphates are possibly potent to induce lung-fibrosis.

Pesticide residues in black tea.

An investigation of residues of organochlorine and organophosphorous pesticides, as well as of a number of fungicides and of inorganic bromide in 99 samples of black tea taken on the Danish market is reported. The type of pesticide residues involved appear to be very uniform within each country of origin, whereas there are distinct differences between individual countries. Tea from Sri Lanka seems to contain less and fewer residues than tea from the other big tea producing countries. A great many of the samples contained alpha-HCH, lindane and DDT. The use of alpha-HCH and DDT is prohibited in

Pesticide-drug interaction in rats.

The possible interactions between a fungicide, thiram, and some drugs acting on the central nervous system were investigated in rats by means of behavioral methods. Potentiation was found after combined treatment with thiram and promethazine, and after thiram and meprobamate. In the case of trihexyphenidyl, an additive interaction was observed. It is presumed that these observations will be of practical toxicological significance.

Pesticide photoproducts: generation and significance.

As with the parent pesticide, the significance of a pesticide photoproduct depends on its concentration in a given environmental compartment, its toxicity, and exposure of the organism or ecosystem of interest. This requires an understanding of the production and environmental chemistry of each photoproduct as well as its toxicity. While these data are generally available for the parent pesticide, they are rarely determined in detail for the photoproducts. Although the environmental photochemistry of each pesticide is different, some generalizations can be made. Photochemical oxidations, reduc

Pesticide containers: their contribution to poisoning.

Pesticide containers play an important role in the epidemiology of pesticide poisonings. Investigations of short-term exposures have shown that difficulty in disposal of used containers, inappropriate pesticide paskaging, and lack of safety containers for household products contribute to morbidity. Remedies for some of the container-associated hazards could be achieved under existing laws.

Pesticides driven pollution in Kuwait: The first evidence of environmental exposure to pesticides in soils and human health risk assessment.

Soil pollution from pesticide residues is a key concern due to the high soil accumulation of pesticides and their human toxicity. Pesticide concentration of surface soil samples from the Sulaibiya agricultural field located in Kuwait was assessed in the present study. The study also investigated health risk assessment for both children and adults based on the residual concentrations. The average concentration of ƩOCPs (sum of organochlorine pesticides) along the present study was 3062 pg/g. The residual concentration of ƩOCPs was comparatively lower as compared to other locations around the wo

Effects of Soil Amendment Calcium Carbonate and Chiral Pesticide Tetraconazole on the Residues of Pesticide and Cadmium in Rice.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a common soil amendment to alleviate cadmium (Cd) transformation and accumulation in brown rice, and tetraconazole is a widely used chiral pesticide to control rice sheath blight. This study investigated the effects of soil amendment CaCO3 and chiral pesticide tetraconazole on pesticide residues, Cd accumulation, and soil microorganisms in two rice cultivars (ZG 96 with low Cd accumulation and ZY 18 with high Cd accumulation) in Cd-contaminated paddy fields. Results showed that CaCO3 significantly reduced Cd concentrations in brown rice by 60.0-82.9%. It altered te

Quantification of pesticide dosage and determinants of excessive pesticide use in smallholder vegetable production systems in Tanzania.

The use of pesticides for diseases and insect pest control has become a key component in smallholder vegetable production. This study therefore quantified the concentration of pesticide active ingredient per unit production land (kg a.i/ha), and drivers of increased pesticide use in smallholder vegetable production systems in Tanzania. Through field surveys and observations, data were collected from 385 farmers from Iringa, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro regions. A binary probit model was used to derive factors fostering increased pesticide use. High dose rates with increased frequency of application

Inclusion of Pesticide Transformation Products Is Key to Estimating Pesticide Exposures and Effects in Small U.S. Streams.

Improved analytical methods can quantify hundreds of pesticide transformation products (TPs), but understanding of TP occurrence and potential toxicity in aquatic ecosystems remains limited. We quantified 108 parent pesticides and 116 TPs in more than 3 700 samples from 442 small streams in mostly urban basins across five major regions of the United States. TPs were detected nearly as frequently as parents (90 and 95% of streams, respectively); 102 TPs were detected at least once and 28 were detected in >20% samples in at least one region-TPs of 9 herbicides, 2 fungicides (chlorothalonil and t

Pesticide exposure and incident thyroid cancer among male pesticide applicators in agricultural health study.

BACKGROUND: Many pesticides are known to have thyroid-disrupting properties. However, few studies have evaluated the association between specific pesticide ingredients and risk of thyroid cancer. We investigated self-reported pesticide use and incident thyroid cancer in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS), a large cohort of occupationally-exposed male pesticide applicators. METHODS: The AHS is a prospective cohort of licensed pesticide applicators in Iowa and North Carolina. At enrollment (1993-1997) and follow-up (1999-2005), participants reported use of 50 pesticides. We characterized expos

Wastewater-based epidemiology approach to assess population exposure to pesticides: a review of a pesticide pharmacokinetic dataset.

Wastewater-based epidemiology is an innovative approach to estimate a population's intentional and unintentional consumption of chemicals based on biomarker assays found in wastewater. This method can provide real-time objective information on the xenobiotics to which a population is directly or indirectly exposed. This approach has already been used to assess the population exposure to four classes of pesticides: organochlorines (chlordecone), triazines, organophosphates, and pyrethroids. This review aims to obtain the data (excretion rates) and characteristics (pesticide and metabolites stab

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and specific pesticide exposures in men: cross-Canada study of pesticides and health.

Our objective in the study was to investigate the putative associations of specific pesticides with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma [NHL; International Classification of Diseases, version 9 (ICD-9) 200, 202]. We conducted a Canadian multicenter population-based incident, case (n = 517)-control (n = 1506) study among men in a diversity of occupations using an initial postal questionnaire followed by a telephone interview for those reporting pesticide exposure of 10 h/year or more, and a 15% random sample of the remainder. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were computed using conditional logistic regression str

Effects of fruit bagging on pesticide fate and fruit quality in peach under mixed-pesticide applications.

Fruit bagging is widely adopted in peach production. However, its integrated effects on pesticide fate and fruit quality under mixed-pesticide applications remain insufficiently understood. This study systematically investigated the effects of peach fruit bagging on the deposition, dissipation kinetics, metabolism, dietary risk, and fruit quality of four commonly used pesticides (difenoconazole, azoxystrobin, thiacloprid, and spirotetramat) under greenhouse and open-field conditions. Our findings indicate that fruit bagging significantly reduced the initial deposits of all pesticides, but it a

Effects of pesticides on exposure and susceptibility to parasites can be generalised to pesticide class and type in aquatic communities.

Pesticide pollution can alter parasite transmission, but scientists are unaware if effects of pesticides on parasite exposure and host susceptibility (i.e. infection risk given exposure) can be generalised within a community context. Using replicated temperate pond communities, we evaluate effects of 12 pesticides, nested in four pesticide classes (chloroacetanilides, triazines, carbamates organophosphates) and two pesticide types (herbicides, insecticides) applied at standardised environmental concentrations on larval amphibian exposure and susceptibility to trematode parasites.
