Olfactory responses of banana weevil predators to volatiles from banana pseudostem tissue and synthetic pheromone.

As a response to attack by herbivores, plants can emit a variety of volatile substances that attract natural enemies of these insect pests. Predators of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) such as Dactylosternum abdominale (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) and Pheidole megacephala (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), are normally found in association with weevil-infested rotten pseudostems and harvested stumps. We investigated whether these predators are attracted to such environments in response to volatiles produced by the host plant, by the weevil, or by the weevil

Identification of glandular (preputial and clitoral) proteins in house rat (Rattus rattus) involved in pheromonal communication.

Proteins (18-20 kDa) belonging to lipocalin family have been reported to act as carriers for ligands binding to pheromones in mouse urine, pig saliva, hamster vaginal fluid and human sweat, that are involved in pheromonal communication. As the preputial gland is a major pheromonal source, the present study was aimed to detect the specific protein bands (around 18-20 kDa) in the preputial and clitoral glands of the house rat, R. rattus. The amount of protein was higher in preputial gland of the male than that of female (clitoral) gland. A 20 kDa protein was noted in male and female glands; howe

Quinone inhibition of sex pheromone activity in the ticks Dermacentor andersoni Stiles and Dermacentor variabilis (Say).

Disruption of sex pheromone activity in female Rocky Mountain wood ticks, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, and American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), was achieved by treatment with the quinones para-benzoquinone and menadione. The most effective treatments were those administered by inoculation to unfed, mature, adult females prior to feeding. Inoculation of p-benzoquinone was also effective when administered to feeding ticks, from 2 to 5 days after they had attached, though not to the same extent as when it was given to unfed ticks. Decreases in sex pheromone activity were also observ

In Situ Measurement of Airborne Pheromone Concentrations and Their Relationship With Dispenser Release Rates for Improving Mating Disruption.

For the control of pests by mating disruption (MD), passive pheromone dispensers are now widely used and have proved their efficacy. Although the release rate of dispensers and its change over time are usually well assessed, the airborne pheromone concentrations generated in a treated area are generally unknown. This hinders the development and optimisation of the treatment by MD. The present work reports the results of a field campaign of measurements carried out with the aim of quantifying airborne concentrations of dodecyl acetate released by passive dispensers distributed over a covered cr

A male-derived volatile sex pheromone in Caenorhabditis nematodes identified through its mimicry by a predator.

Recent studies demonstrated that the predacious fungi Arthrobotrys oligospora emits a mixture of volatile chemical cues that function to attract nematode prey. The strong attraction elicited by one of the mixture components, methyl 3-methyl-2-butenoate (MMB), was highly female- and hermaphrodite-specific within several Caenorhabditis species, including C. remanei and C. elegans, suggesting that MMB might function as a mimic of an endogenous, male-produced, volatile sex pheromone (VSP) within these species. Here, we report evidence that MMB is produced by C. remanei males at levels that are att

ODR-1 acts in AWB neurons to determine the sexual identity of C. elegans pheromone blends.

Valence of animal pheromone blends can vary due to differences in relative abundance of individual components. For example, in C. elegans, whether a pheromone blend is perceived as "male" or "hermaphrodite" is determined by the ratio of concentrations of ascr#10 and ascr#3. The neuronal mechanisms that evaluate this ratio are not currently understood. We present data that suggest that the function of guanylyl cyclase ODR-1 in AWB neurons is required for the effect of ascr#3 that counteracts the activity of ascr#10. This finding defines a new module in the neuronal mechanism that determines the

Identification and Functional Characterization of Two Putative Pheromone Receptors in the Potato Tuber Moth, Phthorimaea operculella.

Pheromones are a kind of signal produced by an animal that evoke innate responses in conspecifics. In moth, pheromone components can be detected by specialized olfactory receptor neurons (OSNs) housed in long sensilla trichoids on the male antennae. The pheromone receptors (PRs) located in the dendrite membrane of OSNs are responsible for pheromone sensing in most Lepidopteran insects. The potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella is a destructive pest of Solanaceae crops. Although sex attractant is widely used in fields to monitor the population of P. operculella, no study has been reported o

Probiotic Bacillus Affects Enterococcus faecalis Antibiotic Resistance Transfer by Interfering with Pheromone Signaling Cascades.

Enterococcus faecalis, a member of the commensal flora in the human gastrointestinal tract, has become a threatening nosocomial pathogen because it has developed resistance to many known antibiotics. More concerningly, resistance gene-carrying E. faecalis cells may transfer antibiotic resistance to resistance-free E. faecalis cells through their unique quorum sensing-mediated plasmid transfer system. Therefore, we investigated the role of probiotic bacteria in the transfer frequency of the antibiotic resistance plasmid pCF10 in E. faecalis populations to mitigate the spread of antibiotic resis

2-Nonanone is a Critical Pheromone Component for Cerambycid Beetle Species Native to North and South America.

An increasing body of evidence indicates that cerambycid beetles native to different continents may share pheromone components, suggesting that these compounds arose as pheromone components early in the evolution of the family. Here, we describe the identification and field testing of the pheromone blends of two species in the subfamily Cerambycinae that share 2-nonanone as an important component of their male-produced aggregation-sex pheromones, the South American Stizocera consobrina Gounelle (tribe Elaphidiini) and the North American Heterachthes quadrimaculatus Haldeman (tribe Neoibidionin

Responsiveness of vomeronasal cells to a newt peptide pheromone, sodefrin as monitored by changes of intracellular calcium concentrations.

A peptide pheromone of the red-bellied male newt, sodefrin was tested for its ability to increase intracellular concentrations of Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)]i) in the dissociated vomeronasal (VN) cells of females by means of calcium imaging system. The pheromone elicited a marked elevation of [Ca(2+)]i in a small population of VN cells from sexually developed females. The population of cells exhibiting sodefrin-induced elevation of [Ca(2+)]i increased concentration-dependently. A pheromone of a different species was ineffective in this respect. The VN cells from non-reproductive females or from reproduct

Synthetic sex pheromone attracts the leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) to traps in the field.

Improving vector control remains a key goal in reducing the world's burden of infectious diseases. More cost-effective approaches to vector control are urgently needed, particularly because vaccines are unavailable and treatment is prohibitively expensive. The causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), Leishmania chagasi, Cunha and Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), is transmitted between animal and human hosts by blood-feeding female sand flies attracted to mating aggregations formed on or above host animals by male-produced sex pheromones. Our results show the potentia

Spatial displacement of release point can enhance activity of an attractant pheromone synergist of a bark beetle.

Flight responses of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, to widely-spaced (>130 m) traps baited with pine volatiles (in turpentine) and the female-produced pheromone component frontalin were enhanced when a bait containing the male pheromone component (+)-endo-brevicomin was attached directly to the trap. However, displacing this bait 4-16 m horizontally from the trap significantly increased its synergistic effect. (+)-endo-Brevicomin enhanced catch to the same degree when the bait was positioned either on the trap or 32 m away. In another experiment, pairs of frontalin

(R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one is a major pheromone component of Anelaphus inflaticollis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

We report the identification and field bioassays of a major component of the male-produced aggregation pheromone of Anelaphus inflaticollis Chemsak, an uncommon desert cerambycine beetle. Male A. inflaticollis produced a sex-specific blend of components that included (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, (S)-2-hydroxyhexan-3-one, 2,3-hexanedione, and (2R,3R)- and (2R,3S)-2,3-hexanediols. Field trials with baited bucket traps determined that the reconstructed synthetic pheromone blend and (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one alone attracted adult A. inflaticollis of both sexes, with significantly more beetles being at

Interactions between acetoin, a plant volatile, and pheromone in Rhynchophorus palmarum: behavioral and olfactory neuron responses.

Aggregation of Rhynchophorus palmarum weevils on host plants is mediated by a male pheromone (rhynchophorol: R) and host-plant volatiles (PVs) acting in synergy. Synthetic PV blends synergizing pheromone contain acetoin (A) and ethyl acetate (EtAc). R, A, and EtAc are detected by specialized olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). In addition, particular types of ORNs are tuned to both A and R. To specify the role played by acetoin in pheromone perception, we recorded the responses of ORNs to 100 ng of A or R presented either separately or mixed. Behavioral responses to R, A, and EtAc were studied

Consequences of interspecies antennal imaginal disc transplantation on organization of olfactory glomeruli and pheromone blend discrimination.

The antennal imaginal disc was transplanted between male larvae of two different heliothine moth species, Heliothis virescens (HV) and Helicoverpa zea (HZ). Males of these species respond to distinct pheromone blends, have different peripheral and central olfactory neuron specificities, as well as distinct arrangements of antennal lobe olfactory glomeruli, in the specialized male macroglomerular complex (MGC). After pupal development and adult eclosion, unilateral (with one antennal disc left intact) and bilateral antennal transplant males were assayed in a wind tunnel to both species' pheromo

The sex-inducing pheromone and wounding trigger the same set of genes in the multicellular green alga Volvox.

The sex-inducing pheromone of the multicellular green alga Volvox carteri is a glycoprotein that triggers development of males and females at a concentration <10(-16) M. By differential screening of a cDNA library, two novel genes were identified that are transcribed under the control of this pheromone. Unexpectedly, one gene product was characterized as a lysozyme/chitinase, and the other gene product was shown to encode a polypeptide with a striking modular composition. This polypeptide has a cysteine protease domain separated by an extensin-like module from three repeats of a chitin binding

Patterns of biosynthesis and accumulation of hydrocarbons and contact sex pheromone in the female German cockroach, Blattella germanica.

De novo synthesis of contact female sex pheromone and hydrocarbons in Blattella germanica was examined using short in vivo incubations. Accumulation of pheromone on the epicuticular surface and the internal pheromone titer were related to age-specific changes in hydrocarbon synthesis and accumulation in normal and allatectomized females. The incorporation of radiolabel from [1-14C]propionate into the cuticular methyl ketone pheromone fraction was positively related to corpora allata activity during two gonotrophic cycles. During peak pheromone production the total internal lipid fraction conta

Pheromaxein, the pheromonal steroid-binding protein, is a major protein synthesized in porcine submaxillary salivary glands.

Submaxillary salivary gland tissue from large White, Göttingen miniature and Meishan (Chinese) breeds of pig, and European wild boars, was incubated with [35S]methionine. The radiolabelled amino acid was incorporated into protein in all incubations as demonstrated by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Specifically [35S]methionine was predominantly incorporated into the alpha- and beta-charge isomers of pheromaxein, a 16-androstene steroid-binding protein, as shown by SDS-PAGE in combination with vertical isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide slab gels. The evolution of male courtship discrimination is driven by sympatry and age-dependent pheromones between Drosophila athabasca species complex and its congeners.

Our understanding of how males evolve courtship discrimination and the traits they use for species identification is restricted to a few model systems. Theory predicts that males between more sympatric species should evolve stronger courtship discrimination and target female traits for reliable species identification. Thus, traits that increase divergence specifically during sexual maturity should be prime targets of species recognition. We tested this by measuring male courtship discrimination indexes (CDIs) and cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) across ten species pairs of Drosophila affinis subg

DREADD-induced silencing of the medial amygdala reduces the preference for male pheromones and the expression of lordosis in estrous female mice.

Sexually naïve estrous female mice seek out male urinary pheromones; however, they initially display little receptive (lordosis) behavior in response to male mounts. Vomeronasal-accessory olfactory bulb inputs to the medial amygdala (Me) regulate courtship in female rodents. We used a reversible inhibitory chemogenetic technique (Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs; DREADDs) to assess the contribution of Me signaling to females' preference for male pheromones and improvement in receptivity normally seen with repeated testing. Sexually naïve females received bilateral Me
