Vestibular vocal fold behavior during phonation in unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

Voice quality in patients with vocal fold paralysis can be affected by several factors, such as the position of the paralyzed vocal fold, its degree of atrophy, the configuration of its free edge, and the level differences between both vocal folds. Depending on the related vocal deficiency the patient will attempt to compensate using different maneuvers, such as increment of vocal tract and neck muscle contraction to improve glottal closure. This is probably one of the reasons why ventricular folds are frequently requested. The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of the homolate

Glottal closure and perceived breathiness during phonation in normally speaking subjects.

Glottal closure and perceived breathiness were evaluated in 9 female and 9 male normally speaking subjects ranging in age from 20 to 35 years. Phonations of the vowel /i/ at three loudness and pitch levels were performed. The degree of glottal closure was judged by speech clinicians from video-fiberstroboscopic recordings. Later they rated the degree of perceived breathiness both in the vowels recorded during the fiberscopy and in separately tape-recorded vowels. Intra- and interjudge reliabilities were satisfactory. The degree of incomplete glottal closure and the degree of perceived breathin

EEG oscillations and related brain generators of phonation phases in long utterances.

While the role of brain rhythms in respiratory and speech motor control has been mainly explored during brief utterances, the specific involvement of brain rhythms in the transition of regulating subglottic pressure phases which are concomitant to specific muscle activation during prolonged phonation remains unexplored. This study investigates whether power spectral variations of the electroencephalogram brain rhythms are related specifically to prolonged phonation phases. High-density EEG and surface EMG were recorded in nineteen healthy participants while they repeatedly produced the syllabl

Quantifying the auto-oscillation complexity following water spraying with interest for phonation.

Human voiced sound production or phonation is the result of a fluid-structure instability in the larynx leading to vocal folds auto-oscillation. In this paper, the effect of surface hydration following water spraying (0 up to 5 ml) on an ongoing auto-oscillation is studied experimentally using different mechanical deformable vocal folds replicas. The complexity of the oscillation is quantified on the upstream pressure by a phase space recurrence and complexity analysis. It is shown that: (1) the ratio of the degree of determinism to the recurrence rate of the phase space states γ and (2) estim

Aerodynamically driven phonation of individual vocal folds under general anesthesia in canines.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We previously developed an instrument called the Aerodynamic Vocal Fold Driver (AVFD) for intraoperative magnified assessment of vocal fold (VF) vibration during microlaryngoscopy under general anesthesia. Excised larynx testing showed that the AVFD could provide useful information about the vibratory characteristics of each VF independently. The present investigation expands those findings by testing new iterations of the AVFD during microlaryngoscopy in the canine model. STUDY DESIGN: Animal model. METHODS: The AVFD is a handheld instrument that is positioned to cont

Effects of reclining posture on velopharyngeal closing pressure during swallowing and phonation.

Velopharyngeal closure plays an important role in preventing air pressure leakage during swallowing and phonation from oropharynx to nasopharynx. Levator veli palatini muscle activity is influenced by oral and nasal air pressure, volume of the swallow bolus and postural changes. However, it is unclear how velopharyngeal closing pressure is affected by reclining posture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reclining posture on velopharyngeal closing pressure during swallowing and phonation. Nine healthy male volunteers (age range, 27-34 years) participated in this study.

Immediate acoustic effects of straw phonation exercises in subjects with dysphonic voices.

Abstract This study sought to measure any acoustic changes in the speaking voice immediately after phonation exercises involving plastic straws versus phonation exercises with the open vowel /a/. Forty-one primary school teachers with slightly dysphonic voices were asked to participate in four phonatory tasks. Phonetically balanced text at habitual intensity level and speaking fundamental frequency was recorded. Acoustical analysis with long-term average spectrum was performed. Significant changes after therapy for the experimental group include the alpha ratio, L1-L0 ratio and ratio between 1

Electroglottographic contact quotient in different phonation types using different amplitude threshold levels.

Contact quotient (CQ), measured by electroglottogram (EGG), is a ratio which illustrates the duration of vocal fold contact during one vocal fold period. In the present study CQ(EGG) was calculated from a sustained vowel phonation in three different phonation types (breathy, normal, pressed) at three amplitude threshold levels (25%, 35%, 50%). CQ(EGG) values were compared with experts' perceptual evaluation of the firmness of phonation. The contact time of the vocal folds differed significantly between the different phonation types at all threshold levels (P < 0.01). Perceptual evaluation corr

Using electroglottographic real-time feedback to control posterior glottal adduction during phonation.

The goal of this pilot study was to determine whether the ability to change the degree of posterior glottal adduction (PGA) during phonation can be acquired more easily with the aid of electroglottographic (EGG) real-time feedback. The subject was a 37-year-old untrained female with habitually breathy voice. Before the experiment, she participated in one voice coaching session where exercises for increasing PGA were explained and executed. During the experiment, phonation has been monitored simultaneously with videostroboscopy, electroglottography, and audio recording. While phonating, the sub

An Investigation of Acoustic Back-Coupling in Human Phonation on a Synthetic Larynx Model.

In the human phonation process, acoustic standing waves in the vocal tract can influence the fluid flow through the glottis as well as vocal fold oscillation. To investigate the amount of acoustic back-coupling, the supraglottal flow field has been recorded via high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a synthetic larynx model for several configurations with different vocal tract lengths. Based on the obtained velocity fields, acoustic source terms were computed. Additionally, the sound radiation into the far field was recorded via microphone measurements and the vocal fold oscillation vi

Vocalization by extant nonavian reptiles: A synthetic overview of phonation and the vocal apparatus.

Among amniote vertebrates, nonavian reptiles (chelonians, crocodilians, and lepidosaurs) are regarded as using vocal signals rarely (compared to birds and mammals). In all three reptilian clades, however, certain taxa emit distress calls and advertisement calls using modifications of regions of the upper respiratory tract. There is no central tendency in either acoustic mechanisms or the structure of the vocal apparatus, and many taxa that vocalize emit only relatively simple sounds. Available evidence indicates multiple origins of true vocal abilities within these lineages. Reptiles thus prov

Tracheoesophageal Diversion and Puncture for Preserving Phonation in Intractable Aspiration: A Case Series.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Tracheoesophageal diversion (TED) can prevent damage to the respiratory system in patients with swallowing disorders and/or repetitive aspiration pneumonia; however, TED may cause the loss of phonation. Our previous study demonstrated that TED with tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) prevents aspiration while retaining phonation. In this study, we aimed to further evaluate the feeding status and phonation of patients who underwent TED with TEP to verify the reproducibility of this procedure. STUDY DESIGN: Case series study. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical

An experimental analysis of the pressures and flows within a driven mechanical model of phonation.

The production of voice is related to the flow of air through the glottis, whose time-dependent shape is defined by the motion of the vocal folds and the translaryngeal pressure. A scaled dynamically similar experimental apparatus that mimics the motion of the vocal folds was designed and built, such that both the glottal diameter and glottal angle change during a motion cycle. This motion is more realistic than in other reported dynamic models. The motion of the folds can be driven at different frequencies. The glottal flow takes place at a constant inlet pressure, mimicking the lung pressure

Effects of transglottal pressure on fundamental frequency of phonation: study with a rubber model.

The fundamental frequency of phonation (F0) change per unit change in transglottal pressure (dF/dP) was studied at different extension lengths and masses of the vibrating part of a rubber model. The dF/dP was decreased when the vibrating part was extended, and also when the mass of the vibrating part was increased. In the former, the F0 was increased, and in the latter, the F0 was decreased. In humans, we have noticed that when the F0 was increased, the dF/dP first decreased and then increased, taking a V-shaped curve as a function of the F0. The present study reveals the mechanism underlying
