Mustard gas is known to have mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on animal and human cells. In this report, 1,632 male Japanese who worked in poison gas factories at some time between the years 1927 and 1945 were studied to determine comparative risk for development of cancer, the reference population being data on Japanese males overall. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) for lung cancer in workers directly and indirectly involved in the production of mustard gas was significantly elevated. OBJECTIVES: Phenytoin is an antiepileptic drug that is used worldwide. The whole-body pharmacokinetics of this drug have been extensively studied using 11C-phenytoin in small animals. However, because of the limited production amounts that are presently available, clinical 11C-phenytoin PET studies to examine the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin in humans have not yet been performed. We aimed to establish a new synthesis method to produce large amounts of 11C-phenytoin to conduct human studies.

BACKGROUND: Immortalized neuronal cell lines can be induced to differentiate into more mature neurons by adding specific compounds or growth factors to the culture medium. Thirty-three workers, ages 24 to 63, developed clinical toxic encephalopathy after exposure to neurotoxins and were studied by SPECT brain scans. Five were exposed to pesticides, 13 were acutely exposed to mixtures of solvents, 8 were chronically exposed to mixtures of hazardous wastes that contained organic solvents, 2 were acutely exposed to phosgene and other toxins, and 5 had exposures to hydrogen sulfide.
