Photochemotherapy (PDT) is based on the interaction of a phototoxic drug (HPD) retained by cancer tissues and excited with a specific laser light. We present here a phase I clinical trial including 54 patients selected on the grounds of non-operability and T1 NO MO staging (UICC) and divided into 3 groups: I) 24 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), II) 14 adenocarcinomas (ADN) of the upper GI tract, III) 16 ADN of the rectosigmoid colon. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Indocyanine green (ICG) is a clinically approved dye for diagnostic purposes, which has an absorption peak in the near infrared and remains intravascular due to a high plasma protein binding. Its therapeutic potential in combination with a diode laser was studied for well vascularized cutaneous tumors.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Six male patients (mean age 49.2 years) with AIDS-related Kaposi sarcomas (n = 30) received ICG (2 x 2 mg/kg i.v.) followed directly by irradiation with a diode laser (lambda = 805 nm, 100 J/cm2, 3 W/cm2).

Few studies have assessed the long-term outcome of patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) treated with extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP). Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare disease and is considered the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Given the infrequent incidence of MF in patients under the age of 20, there are no established guidelines for the treatment of these patients; the overwhelming majority have an early-stage disease and progression to more advanced stages is very rare. This study presents the safety and effectiveness of photo-photochemotherapy as a first-line approach in the treatment of an early-stage MF even in young patients.
