[Photography, medicine and corporeality: the device of the image in the forms of discursive apprehension of the disease].

To study about and reflect on the disease is to highlight the ways of seeing and saying what can a body and its power to be affected before fingerprints or traces that degrade it. This article exposes epistemological research on social representations brackets (where register know doctor) disease from the registry of Clinical Dermatology in the second half of the 19th century. This is resorted to an analysis of medical photographs preserved in archives of Colombia and Spain taking as discursive forms of seeing and saying the disease who have disfiguring effects in the body.

Hunters and Gatherers of Pictures: Why Photography Has Become a Human Universal.

Photography is ubiquitous worldwide. We analyzed why people take, share, and use personal photographs, independent of their specific cultural background. These behaviors are still poorly understood. Experimental research on them is scarce. Smartphone technology and social media have pushed the success of photography, but cannot explain it, as not all smartphone features are widely used just because they are available. We analyzed properties of human nature that have made taking and using photographs functional behaviors. We did this based on the four levels, which Nikolaas Tinbergen suggested

Smartphone-based fundus photography for screening of plus-disease retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate screening of treatment-warranted retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can lead to devastating visual outcomes. Especially in resource-poor communities, the use of an affordable, portable, and easy to use smartphone-based non-contact fundus photography device may prove useful for screening for high-risk ROP. This study evaluates the feasibility of screening for high-risk ROP using a novel smartphone-based fundus photography device, RetinaScope. METHODS: Retinal images were obtained using RetinaScope on a cohort of prematurely born infants during routine examinations for ROP.

The Dercum-Muybridge Collaboration and the Study of Pathologic Gaits Using Sequential Photography.

In the late 1870s and 1880s, prior to the development of movie cameras or projectors, English-American photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) photographed sequential images of people and animals in motion, using arrays of sequentially triggered single-image cameras. In 1885, Philadelphia neurologist Francis Dercum (1856-1931) collaborated with Muybridge at the University of Pennsylvania to photograph sequential images of patients with various neurological disorders involving abnormal movements, and particularly various gait disorders, including both the sensory ataxic gait of tabes dorsal

Diagnostic Accuracy of Nonmydriatic Fundus Photography for the Detection of Glaucoma in Diabetic Patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy for glaucoma of a set of criteria with nonmydriatic monoscopic fundus photography (NMFP) in diabetics. METHODS: Diabetics recruited from a screening program for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic glaucoma patients recruited from our glaucoma unit were included. Any patient with evidence of diabetic retinopathy was excluded. Diabetic patients had to have no visual field defects to be included as controls. Glaucoma patients had to have a glaucomatous field defect in at least one eye to be included. One NMFP was taken per eye for all subjects. These p

Quantitative measurement of mucosal wave by high-speed photography in excised larynges.

The movement characteristics of mucosal waves of the vocal fold are important components in normal phonation. Quantitative studies of the mucosal wave have used stroboscopic techniques from a supraglottic view. The current study measured displacement of mucosal epithelium during experimental phonation by using high-speed photography from an infraglottic view. Effects of thyroarytenoid contraction, increased mean airflow rate, and variation of vocal fold length were examined in canine larynges. Top and bottom vocal fold "lip" amplitude, fundamental frequency, and phase difference were the depen

Anterior chamber angle biometry: a comparison of Scheimpflug photography and ultrasound biomicroscopy.

Scheimpflug photography and ultrasound biomicroscopy allow measurement of anterior chamber angle width. To analyze the value of both diagnostic tools, measurements of the same subjects were correlated. Anterior chamber angle width in both eyes of 20 volunteers without any ophthalmological case history was measured in eight meridians. Scheimpflug photographs were recorded on Kodak T-max 400 black-and-white film using a Topcon SL-45 camera. Measurement of chamber angle was done with the aid of a self-programmed PC software. Ultrasound biomicroscopic measurements were obtained using a Humphrey UB

The follow-up of patients screened for glaucoma with non-mydriatic fundus photography.

In order to evaluate the value of photographic screening in predicting progressive glaucomatous damage, we re-examined 26 subjects 5 years after the initial screening. Of the 26 patients 16 had typical glaucomatous optic disc and visual field abnormalities (n = 7), retinal nerve layer damage (n = 6), or other risk factors of glaucoma (n = 3). In 10 of 26 patients suspected of having glaucoma, no abnormalities were initially confirmed. Of the 16 eyes with initially abnormal findings, 10 (63%) showed progressive changes during the 5-year follow-up period. The 10 initially suspected cases have re

Deep Learning-Based Glaucoma Screening Using Regional RNFL Thickness in Fundus Photography.

Since glaucoma is a progressive and irreversible optic neuropathy, accurate screening and/or early diagnosis is critical in preventing permanent vision loss. Recently, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an accurate diagnostic tool to observe and extract the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), which closely reflects the nerve damage caused by glaucoma. However, OCT is less accessible than fundus photography due to higher cost and expertise required for operation. Though widely used, fundus photography is effective for early glaucoma detection only when used by experts

Radiation-free quantification of head malformations in craniosynostosis patients from 3D photography.

The evaluation of cranial malformations plays an essential role both in the early diagnosis and in the decision to perform surgical treatment for craniosynostosis. In clinical practice, both cranial shape and suture fusion are evaluated using CT images, which involve the use of harmful radiation on children. Three-dimensional (3D) photography offers non-invasive, radiation-free, and anesthetic-free evaluation of craniofacial morphology. The aim of this study is to develop an automated framework to objectively quantify cranial malformations in patients with craniosynostosis from 3D photography.

Optic disc drusen--a photographic study. II. Retinal nerve fibre layer photography.

As part of an examination of 180 patients with optic disc drusen fundus photographs of 159 cases were evaluated. Twenty-one patients had no fundus photographs, and 12 cases had only autofluorescence pictures, positive colour transparencies or fluorescein angiograms. Peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) was examined in 147 patients from black-and-white stereo-photographs of the optic disc (116) or from special RNFL pictures (4) or from both (27). Fifty-three of 147 patients had been photographed two or more times during the years from 1967 to 1981. The regional grading of the RNFL was

Through the nurse's lens: Bereavement photography and creative interventions in nursing care.

Art has long supported healing, and, in nursing, creative practices such as music, writing, and photography enhance holistic care by fostering connection, emotional well-being, and comfort during end-of-life moments. Bereavement photography, particularly in neonatal and pediatric settings, provides families with a tangible way to honor and remember their child, while also helping nurses and caregivers process their grief. Research shows that images are deeply valued as keepsakes of life and love, and when offered with ethical, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed approaches, photography b
