Conjugates of folic acids with BSA-coated quantum dots for cancer cell targeting and imaging by single-photon and two-photon excitation.

Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-coated CdTe/ZnS quantum dots (BSA-QDs) were selected to conjugate with folic acid (FA), forming FA-BSA-QDs. This study aims to develop these small FA-BSA-QDs (less than 10 nm) for the diagnosis of cancers in which the FA receptor (FR) is overexpressed. The enhancement of cellular uptake in FR-positive human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells (KB cells) for FA-BSA-QDs was found by means of confocal fluorescence microscopy under single-photon and two-photon excitation. The uptake enhancement for FA-BSA-QDs was further evaluated by flow-cytometric analysis in 10(4) KB cells

Catalytic Combustion of Extremely Low Concentrations of Methane by Pt/CeO2 {111} Nanocrystals Driven by the Synergy of Photons and Phonons.

Anthropogenic methane emissions from landfill sites and coal mines with low local concentrations (<5000 ppm) are a critical factor in climate change, and the conversion of such low concentrations of methane has been widely regarded as a thorny issue in catalysis while being pivotal for a sustainable society. Conventional catalytic methane combustion requires high temperatures (>400 °C) and is particularly inefficient at rather low concentrations (<1000 ppm). Herein, Pt/CeO2 {111} nanocrystals assisted by photon-phonon codriven catalysis overcome these challenges. Ultrafast transient absorption

Exposure to Carbon Ions Triggers Proinflammatory Signals and Changes in Homeostasis and Epidermal Tissue Organization to a Similar Extent as Photons.

The increasing application of charged particles in radiotherapy requires a deeper understanding of early and late side effects occurring in skin, which is exposed in all radiation treatments. We measured cellular and molecular changes related to the early inflammatory response of human skin irradiated with carbon ions, in particular cell death induction and changes in differentiation and proliferation of epidermal cells during the first days after exposure. Model systems for human skin from healthy donors of different complexity, i.e., keratinocytes, coculture of skin cells, 3D skin equivalent

Effective dose of A-bomb radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as assessed by chromosomal effectiveness of spectrum energy photons and neutrons.

The effective dose of combined spectrum energy neutrons and high energy spectrum gamma-rays in A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki has long been a matter of discussion. The reason is largely due to the paucity of biological data for high energy photons, particularly for those with an energy of tens of MeV. To circumvent this problem, a mathematical formalism was developed for the photon energy dependency of chromosomal effectiveness by reviewing a large number of data sets published in the literature on dicentric chromosome formation in human lymphocytes. The chromosomal effectiveness w

Detection of Chemical Warfare Agents with a Miniaturized High-Performance Drift Tube Ion Mobility Spectrometer Using High-Energetic Photons for Ionization.

A growing demand for low-cost gas sensors capable of detecting the smallest amounts of highly toxic substances in air, including chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs), has emerged in recent years. Ion mobility spectrometers (IMS) are particularly suitable for this application due to their high sensitivity and fast response times. In view of the preferred mobile use of such devices, miniaturized ion drift tubes are required as the core of IMS-based lightweight, low-cost, hand-held gas detectors. Thus, we evaluate the suitability of a miniaturized ion mobility spec

Rational Development of Near-Infrared Fluorophores with Large Stokes Shifts, Bright One-Photon, and Two-Photon Emissions for Bioimaging and Biosensing Applications.

Fluorophores with near-infrared emissions play a crucial role in numerous bioimaging and biosensing applications, owing to their deep penetration depths, low auto-fluorescence, and minimal tissue damages. Herein, the rational development of a new class of near-infrared fluorophores with bright one-photon and two-photon emissions at ≈740 nm, large Stokes shifts (≈80 nm), significant two-photon action absorption cross-section (≈185 GM at 820 nm), excellent water solubility, outstanding photostability, and low toxicity is reported. Their biological applications in mitochondrial labelling, deep ti

Fundamental Building Blocks for Scalable Photonic Programmable Processors.

Photonics technology is emerging as a key enabler, complementing electronics in next-generation applications by offering greater bandwidth, lower latency and improved energy efficiency. Silicon photonic programmable processors bring these advantages to a solid-state platform, providing compact form factors and low power consumption, although the scalability of densely integrated circuits is still under active investigation. In this article, we present a comprehensive study of the essential photonic components required for large-scale integration of silicon photonic processors, covering both de

Photon State Evolution in Arbitrary Time-Varying Media.

We introduce the instantaneous eigenstate method to study the evolution of quantum states in nondispersive, homogeneous media with arbitrary time-varying permittivity and permeability. This method leverages the Heisenberg equation to bypass the Schrödinger equation, which leads to a complicated infinite set of coupled differential equations. Instead, the method allows the computation of the state evolution by solving only two coupled differential equations. Using this approach, we draw general conclusions about photon statistics in time-varying media. Our findings reveal that the maximum proba

Optically locked low-noise photonic microwave oscillator.

The next generation of sensing and communication applications rely on high-frequency microwave generation with low noise. Microwave photonic technology is highly promising; however, its practical applications have so far been limited by the complexity of existing system architectures. Here, we demonstrate an optically locked low-noise photonic microwave oscillator, in which all the optical components are packaged within a small module of 166 mL; low noise microwave generation is achieved at 10.4 GHz with single-sideband phase noise of -54 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -141 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -162 dBc/Hz

Photonic Doping of Epsilon-Near-Zero Bragg Microcavities.

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) photonics provides a powerful route to extreme dispersion engineering, strong field confinement, and unconventional wave phenomena. A closely related concept, photonic doping, employs subwavelength nonmagnetic dielectric inclusions in ENZ media to enable exotic responses such as perfect-magnetic-conductor behavior and simultaneous epsilon-and mu-near-zero states. However, photonic doping has remained limited to microwave and far-infrared regimes due to intrinsic losses in optical ENZ materials. Here, photonic doping is demonstrated at optical frequencies by embedding a

Photon-Counting CT for Evaluation of Coiled Intracranial Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial aneurysms treated with endovascular embolization often require surveillance imaging using DSA, an invasive, risky, and expensive procedure. Existing noninvasive imaging modalities (standard or MRA) are often unsatisfactory for evaluating treated aneurysms due to artifacts from embolization devices. The objective of the present study was to determine whether photon-counting CT (PCCT) imaging parameters could be optimized to confer satisfactory imaging resolution in an anthropomorphic phantom of treated intracranial aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phantom

Two-Photon Excited Luminescence in Mechanoluminescent ZnS Microparticles.

Mechanoluminescent particles, including ZnS, are promising intravenous light sources for biomedical imaging. Here, we report a serendipitous finding that during femtosecond two-photon microscopy, a microsecond-scale prolonged luminescence ("comet tail") is observed, whereas it is absent or greatly reduced under confocal continuous-wave excitation. We found that the decay time constant of the comet tail is typically 2-5 μs, remains temperature-independent from 0-37 °C, increases with laser power, and decreases with the decay time constant of the particle's temperature when varying the embedding

Photo-counting detector CT is a relatively new technology that is becoming increasingly prevalent. In recent years, photon-counting CT has been shown to have benefits in numerous neuroradiologic clinical applications, including temporal bone imaging, detection of spinal CSF leaks, and CTA of the head, neck, and spine. New uses for photo-counting detector CT continue to emerge, capitalizing on the high spatial resolution and other advantages of this technology to improve patient care. One potential application in the spine is the detection and localization of the artery of Adamkiewicz, which pr

Photonic Cyclic Orbit Bound to a Single Weyl Point.

Weyl orbits are topologically protected cyclotron trajectories that connect Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities in momentum space, coupling bulk chiral Landau levels and surface Fermi arcs to produce quantum oscillations under static magnetic fields. While well-studied in condensed matter systems, their photonic analogs remain elusive due to the difficulty in generating global pseudomagnetic fields. Here, we overcome these limitations by engineering a pseudomagnetic field domain wall, enabling a novel photonic cyclic orbit (PCO) bound to a single Weyl point, unlike conventional Weyl orbits that

Quantitative 3D Real-Space Analysis of Photonic Supraparticles.

Supraparticles (SPs) are assemblies of smaller particles, and they form an interesting material class. One way through which these structures can be formed is self-assembly (SA) in spherical confinement, and what makes them unique is that they combine the properties of the smaller particles with collective properties arising from the length scale on which these smaller particles are ordered. Additionally, the limited number of particles in an SP enables them to form structures that are not found in bulk systems. An example of this is icosahedral symmetry, which is the equilibrium structure for

Giant nonreciprocal chirality in photonic quasi-BIC systems.

Simultaneously achieving giant chirality, high-efficiency nonlinearity, and robust nonreciprocity remains elusive due to the inherent trade-off between the structural asymmetry required for chiroptics and the high quality (Q) factors essential for nonlinearity. Here, we overcome this fundamental limitation in silicon metasurfaces by exploiting symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). By implementing a two-stage symmetry-breaking mechanism that combines an in-plane structural rotation with out-of-plane height perturbations, we engineer high-Q (104) resonances dominated by magnet

Decoupled-Subspace-Induced Flat Bands in a Photonic Superlattice.

Flat bands in photonic systems enable strong light confinement and enhanced light-matter interactions, yet realizing flat dispersion across an entire Brillouin zone (BZ) remains nontrivial. Here, we propose a practical mechanism for generating BZ-spanning flat bands through the coupling between M propagating modes and N localized resonances. When N>M, the finite-channel model necessarily supports exact flat bands that originate from an effectively decoupled subspace. As a representative example, we implement this mechanism in a plasmonic superlattice, where multiple localized resonances hybrid
