Photoperiodic regulation of prolactin secretion: changes in intra-pituitary signalling and lactotroph heterogeneity.

Many mammalian species utilise day-length (photoperiod) to adapt their physiology to seasonal changes in environmental conditions, via secretion of pineal melatonin. Photoperiodic regulation of prolactin secretion is believed to occur via melatonin-mediated changes in the secretion of a putative prolactin secretagogue, tuberalin, from the pituitary pars tuberalis. Despite the in vivo and in vitro evidence in support of this intra-pituitary signalling mechanism, the identity of tuberalin has yet to be elucidated. This paper reviews recent advances in the characterisation of tuberalin and the re

Photoperiodic regulation of leptin resistance in the seasonally breeding Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Seasonal Siberian hamsters lose fat reserves, decrease body weight and leptin concentrations, and suppress reproduction on short-day photoperiod (SD). Chronic leptin infusion at physiological doses caused body weight and fat loss in SD animals but was ineffective in long-day (LD) hamsters. Using ovariectomized estrogen-treated females, we tested the hypothesis that responsiveness to leptin is regulated by photoperiod. On SD, hypothalamic neuropeptide Y, agouti-related peptide, and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript gene expression in the arcuate nucleus did not exhibit significant c

Effects of photoperiod and androgen on proopiomelanocortin gene expression in the arcuate nucleus of golden hamsters.

In golden hamsters, seasonal changes in day length act via a pineal-dependent mechanism to regulate feedback and behavioral effects of androgen. Endogenous opiates participate in photoperiodically regulated neuroendocrine functions, but the effects of androgen on expression of the gene encoding POMC, the precursor of beta-endorphin, have been controversial. We used quantitative in situ hybridization to examine regulation of POMC messenger RNA (mRNA) by testosterone and to test the hypothesis that short day lengths act through the pineal gland to amplify POMC mRNA expression. We studied intact

Effect of photoperiod on the diurnal melatonin and 5-methoxytryptophol rhythms in the human pineal gland.

The mammalian pineal organ is a major endocrine component of the circadian timing system, primarily concerned with the regulation of photoperiodic responses. The effect of different photoperiods on the diurnal variation in the concentration of melatonin and 5-methoxytryptophol (5-ML) was studied in the pineal glands, obtained at autopsy, of 38 human subjects, and measured by radioimmunoassay. A diurnal rhythm in pineal melatonin was evident only in the long photoperiod (April-September) with melatonin concentrations being 4.2 times higher at night (22.00-10.00 h) than during the day (10.00-22.

Indoleamines and the UV-light-sensitive photoperiodic responses of the melanocyte network: a biological calendar?

The pineal, serotoninergic and pigmented neurons are associated with light-dependent sleep/arousal, serving as a biological clock with a circadian rhythm. This rhythm is maintained by melatonin which serves to recognise the 'dark' phase. The neural network that responds to seasonal variations in day/night length has not been identified. The present study demonstrates that melanocytes in human skin respond to changes in the duration of UV exposure, and can serve as a biological calendar. These responses are mediated by two indoleamines, serotonin and melatonin. Higher melatonin levels correspon

The thyroid and photoperiodic control of seasonal reproduction in American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea).

To explore the role of the thyroid gland in the control of seasonal reproduction in obligately photoperiodic American tree sparrows (Spizella arborea), the effects of (1) thyroxine administered in drinking water to thyroid-intact photosensitive or photorefractory birds, and (2) radiothyroidectomy before and after photostimulation and during photorefractoriness were examined. Chronic administration of pharmacological doses of thyroxine induced testicular growth and usually regression in initially photosensitive birds held on short or intermediate daylengths. Some thyroxine-treated birds with re

Reception of photoperiodic information by fetal Siberian hamsters: role of the mother's pineal gland.

The rate of reproductive development in juvenile male Siberian hamsters is strongly influenced by daylength (photoperiod). Recent studies indicate that reception of photoperiodic cues begins during fetal life. The present experiments yielded a further demonstration that developing male Siberian hamsters receive information about the photoperiod to which their mother is exposed during pregnancy. The possibility that photoperiodic information is transmitted from mother to young after birth was investigated by cross-fostering young gestated on 12L and 16L to mothers from the other photoperiod. Time of the sidereal year affects responsiveness to the phase-resetting effects of photoperiod in the ewe.

Two groups of ovary-intact ewes were placed in separate photochambers on the day of the vernal equinox (VE). One group was exposed to a 16 h light:8 h dark (16L:8D) photoperiod and the other to 8L:16D. On the day of the summer solstice (SS) and at 90-91-day intervals thereafter [autumnal equinox (AE), winter solstice (WS), VE and SS], each group was changed to the opposite photoperiod. The latent period between each change and either onset or cessation of cycles, as determined by measuring blood progesterone concentrations, was recorded. The latent period between change to 8L:16D and onset of

Pineal melatonin content in photoperiodically responsive and non-responsive phenotypes of deer mice.

1. The pineal melatonin content of photoperiod responsive and photoperiod non-responsive male deer mice was assessed. 2. Pineal melatonin content did not differ between short-day mice with regressed testes or those that maintained their reproductive systems. 3. These data suggest that differential phasing of melatonin release or post-pineal mechanisms are responsible for the differential responsiveness to day length among deer mice.

Transcriptomic insights into photoperiodic regulation of goose reproduction: galanin emerges as a potential player.

[OBJECTIVE]: To characterize hypothalamic mRNA profiles under different photoperiods and identify key reproductive regulators based on the "ultralong-short-long" artificial photoperiodic reproduction model of practical production. [METHODS]: The triphasic photoperiodic regimens consisted of ultralong (L:D = 20 h:4 h), short (L:D = 6.5 h:17.5 h), and long (L:D = 12 h:12 h) photoperiods. At each phase of photoperiod (UP, SP and LP) treatment, three geese per group (n = 3) were selected for collection of blood, ovarian, and hypothalamic tissues. Hypothalamic samples subsequently processed for RNA

Effect of Changes in Photoperiods on Melatonin Expression and Gut Health Parameters in Laying Ducks.

We investigated the effect of photoperiod on ileal morphology, barrier function, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents, microbial flora, melatonin expression, and synthesis in laying ducks. After adaption, a total of 180 Jinding laying ducks (252 days old) were randomly divided into three treatments, receiving 12L (hours of light):12D (hours of darkness), 16L:8D, or 20L:4D. Each treatment had six replicates with 10 birds each. The formal experiment lasted 58 days. Compared with 12L:12D, the significantly higher values of villus height and goblet cell percentage (GCP) were observed in 16L:8D t

GnRH and the photoperiodic control of seasonal reproduction: Delegating the task to kisspeptin and RFRP-3.

Synchronization of mammalian breeding activity to the annual change of photoperiod and environmental conditions is of the utmost importance for individual survival and species perpetuation. Subsequent to the early 1960s, when the central role of melatonin in this adaptive process was demonstrated, our comprehension of the mechanisms through which light regulates gonadal activity has increased considerably. The current model for the photoperiodic neuroendocrine system points to pivotal roles for the melatonin-sensitive pars tuberalis (PT) and its seasonally-regulated production of thyroid-stimu

Photoperiodic regulation of plasma gonadotropin levels in previtellogenic greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili).

In Seriola species, exposure to a long photoperiod regime is known to induce ovarian development. This study examined photoperiodic effects on pituitary gene expression and plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh) in previtellogenic greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili). The fish were exposed to short (8L:16D) or long (18L:6D) photoperiod. The water temperature was maintained at 22 °C. Compared with the short-photoperiod group, plasma Fsh levels were higher on days 10 and 30 in the long-photoperiod group, but plasma Lh levels did not significantly differ.

An intact dorsomedial posterior arcuate nucleus is not necessary for photoperiodic responses in Siberian hamsters.

Seasonal responses of many animal species are triggered by changes in daylength and its transduction into a neuroendocrine signal by the pineal gland through the nocturnal duration of melatonin (MEL) release. The precise central sites necessary to receive, transduce, and relay the short day (SD) fall-winter MEL signals into seasonal responses and changes in physiology and behavior are unclear. In Siberian hamsters, SDs trigger decreases in body and lipid mass, testicular regression and pelage color changes. Several candidate genes and their central sites of expression have been proposed as com

Selectivity of canary HVC neurons for the bird's own song: modulation by photoperiodic conditions.

To what extent seasonal factors modify the neuronal functional properties within the nuclei of the avian song system remains an open question. In adult songbirds, neurons of the song premotor nucleus HVC (used as a proper name) exhibit selective responses for the bird's own song (BOS). Here we examine whether, outside the breeding season, when songs are less stereotyped, HVC neurons of male canaries still respond selectively to the BOS produced during this period. In an initial experiment, single-unit recordings (n = 114) revealed that the neuronal selectivity for the current BOS was attenuate

The onset of increased melatonin secretion after the onset of darkness in sheep depends on the photoperiod.

In sheep, melatonin secretion occurs rapidly after the onset of darkness, but the interval fluctuates according to different authors. The aim of this study was to determine this interval in sheep subjected to a long or a short photoperiod. Blood samples were taken at the right jugular vein every 100 s for 1 hr after the onset of darkness. The experiment was repeated on three consecutive days either in long (LD 16:8) or in short photoperiod (LD 8:16) on the same animals. Melatonin secretion was found to begin within 11 min under long photoperiod and 20 min under short period. It can be conclude

The impact of photoperiods and melatonin on gonadal development in juvenile Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti).

The reproductive response of both intact adult and juvenile Turkish hamsters has been thoroughly studied and shown to be similar, unlike the golden hamster where juveniles remain aphotoperiodic until approximately 8 weeks of age. Unstudied to date, however, is the role of the pineal and its hormone melatonin in generating the testicular response to photoperiod in juvenile Turkish hamsters. Therefore, in this study we examined the reproductive response of prepubertal male Turkish hamsters, subjected to four different photoperiods (8L:16D, 16L:8D, 20L:4D, and 24L:0D) with altered pineal gland fu

Endogenous melatonin signal does not mediate the effect of photoperiod on the rat suprachiasmatic nucleus.

The duration of the nocturnal interval during which light can induce high Fos-like immunoreactivity in the suprachiasmatic nucleus is a function of the photoperiod to which rats are exposed. The effect of photoperiod is not altered by pinealectomy indicating that day length affects the functional state of the suprachiasmatic nucleus circadian pacemaking system in the rat directly, not via the pineal melatonin signal.

Suprachiasmatic nucleus and photoperiodic regulation of gonadal development in the Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus.

Photoregressed Siberian hamsters exposed at 19 days of age to constant light for 24 h manifested increased testicular development 16 days later. Hamsters that sustained lesions of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) 3 days after the light pulse had significantly heavier gonads than did sham-operated animals or hamsters pinealectomized at 19 days of age. Enhanced reproductive development after SCN ablation is not due solely to lesion-induced elimination of melatonin secretion. SCN neural activity beginning 3 days after the light pulse is not necessary for light-induced gonadal growth.

Influence of photoperiod and temperature on serum melatonin in the diamondback water snake, Nerodia rhombifera.

Serum melatonin concentrations in the diamondback water snake, Nerodia rhombifera, were measured with a radioimmunoassay to determine the influence of photoperiod and temperature on melatonin levels. A diel cycle of serum melatonin, with elevated concentrations during scotophase, occurred in snakes acclimatized for 2 weeks to a 12L:12D photoperiod and 25 degrees. This cycle persisted in snakes acclimatized to a reverse photoperiod, with a longer duration of elevated scotophase levels. In snakes acclimatized to a normal 12L:12D photoperiod and 10 degrees, photophase serum melatonin concentratio
