Changes in photosynthesis and grazing facilitate growth of a mixotrophic protist under ocean acidification and warming.

Mixotrophic protists capable of both photosynthesis and phagotrophy are key members of marine plankton communities. Yet, little is known about their responses to the combination of ocean acidification and warming. A marine mixotrophic chrysophyte, Ochromonas CCMP2951, was subjected to two levels of pCO2 (300 and 800 ppm, resulting in pH of 8.2 and 7.8) and temperature (21°C and 26°C) in a factorial design. Enhanced growth rates were observed in both the high CO2 and high temperature treatments, while cell size significantly decreased with temperature. Strongly decreased cellular phosphorus con

Dual Breaking the Geometric and Electronic Symmetry of Covalent Organic Framework for Enhanced H2O2 Photosynthesis.

The efficient conversion of solar energy into chemicals is fundamentally limited by the rapid, random recombination of photogenerated charges and strong exciton binding in semiconductors. We transcend incremental catalyst optimization by introducing a universal molecular design strategy "simultaneous geometric and electronic symmetry breaking" in covalent organic frameworks that intrinsically programs directional charge flow. Our strategy of replacing symmetric benzene units with asymmetric thiophene rings induces cooperative point-group distortion and asymmetric electron density redistributio

A new-to-nature photosynthesis system enhances utilization of one-carbon substrates in Escherichia coli.

Photosynthesis harvests solar energy to convert CO2 into chemicals, offering a potential solution to reduce atmospheric CO2. However, integrating photosynthesis into non-photosynthetic microbes to utilize one-carbon substrates is challenging. Here, a photosynthesis system is reconstructed in E. coli, by integrating light and dark reaction to synthesize bioproducts from one-carbon substrates. A light reaction is reconstructed using the photosystem of photosynthetic bacteria, increasing ATP and NADH contents by 337.9% and 383.7%, respectively. A dark reaction is constructed by designing CO2 fixa

Identification and characterization of compounds that improve plant photosynthesis and growth under light stress conditions.

To meet the escalating food and fuel demands of a growing global population and industry, food production requires a 50% increase by 2050. However, various environmental stresses, such as excessive light, significantly inhibit plant growth and lead to substantial reductions in crop yields. A major contributing factor to such declines is the reduction in photosynthetic capacity. In this study, a chemical-screening system based on standard 96-well plate and tobacco leaf tissue was developed. With this system, several anthraquinone derivatives that could alleviate high light stress from plants we

Metabolite profiling reveals slow and uncoordinated adjustment of C4 photosynthesis to sudden changes in irradiance.

In the field, plants continually experience changes in irradiance. Research in C3 species has revealed that while the Calvin-Benson cycle (CBC) adjusts rapidly to changing irradiance, there is substantial loss of photosynthetic efficiency due to slow adjustment of energy dissipation and stomatal conductance. Less is known about the impact of changing irradiance on photosynthetic efficiency in C4 species. We subjected maize (Zea mays) to a sudden increase or decrease of irradiance in the nonsaturating range and performed time-resolved measurement of photosynthetic rate and profiling of metaboli

Comprehensive analysis of the effects on photosynthesis and energy balance in tomato leaves under magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium (Mg), as an essential and central mineral element for chlorophyll biosynthesis, plays a crucial role in plant photosynthesis. Magnesium deficiency inevitably affects the photosynthetic ability of leaves, thereby impairing the yield and quality of crops. However, few studies have revealed the intrinsic mechanisms by which Mg deficiency hinders growth and photosynthesis, particularly by analyzing the processes of light capture, dissipation, absorption, and utilization in tomato. The experiment studied the effects of Mg deficiency on internal structure of leaves, light absorption, elect

GhCYS2 governs the tolerance against cadmium stress by regulating cell viability and photosynthesis in cotton.

Cysteine, an early sulfur-containing compound in plants, is of significant importance in sulfur metabolism. CYS encodes cysteine synthetase that further catalyzes cysteine synthesis. In this investigation, CYS genes, identified from genome-wide analysis of Gossypium hirsutum bioinformatically, led to the discovery of GhCYS2 as the pivotal gene responsible for Cd2+ response. The silencing of GhCYS2 through virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) rendered plants highly susceptible to Cd2+ stress. Silencing GhCYS2 in plants resulted in diminished levels of cysteine and glutathione while leading to th

Toxicity and deficiency of copper in Elsholtzia splendens affect photosynthesis biophysics, pigments and metal accumulation.

Elsholtzia splendens is a copper-tolerant plant species growing on copper deposits in China. Spatially and spectrally resolved kinetics of in vivo absorbance and chlorophyll fluorescence in mesophyll of E. splendens were used to investigate the copper-induced stress from deficiency and toxicity as well as the acclimation to excess copper stress. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solutions containing either Fe(III)-EDTA or Fe(III)-EDDHA. Copper toxicity affected light-acclimated electron flow much stronger than nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) or dark-acclimated photochemical efficiency of

Low temperature-enhanced inhibition of photosynthesis by oxides of nitrogen in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.).

The response of photosynthetic gas exchange to oxides of nitrogen (NOx) was studied in leaves of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) at different temperatures. Exposure to > high concentrations (e.g. 13 μmol NOx mol-1 ), similar to those often found in commercial glasshouses, caused a rapid inhibition of the net assimilation of CO2 . This appeared to be by a direct effect on photosynthesis rather than by a change in the stomatal conductance. In ambient CO2 , (345 μmol mol-1 ), the percentage inhibition at 10 and 5°C was approximately 3× and 5×, respectively, that measured at 20°C. This effect of tempe

TaANT11-4A enhances grain yield by orchestrating photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism through direct transcriptional activation.

The AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) transcription factor family plays important roles in floral organogenesis and plant development; however, the mechanisms by which ANT proteins regulate yield remain unclear. Here, we conducted a genome-wide search and identified 64 ANT genes in the wheat genome. Association analysis of yield-related traits in 403 wheat accessions revealed that ANT family genes were significantly associated with grain size and weight. Among these genes, TaANT11-4A showed a strong association with yield-related traits. Three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near TaANT11-4A modulated

Ionic Cocrystal Programming of Spatial Ionic Organization in Carbon Nitrides Enables Highly Efficient H2O2 Photosynthesis.

Controlling the spatial organization of ions in polymeric photocatalysts remains a fundamental challenge for optimizing charge transport and catalytic selectivity in solar-driven hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis. In conventional poly(heptazine imide) (PHI), alkali cations are incorporated through molten-salt-mediated equilibration, producing statistically distributed ionic environments with little spatial correlation. Here, we demonstrate that organic-inorganic ionic cocrystals (ICCs) serve as molecularly preorganized precursors that promote spatially correlated ionic environments during fra

NtPHT2;1 promotes tobacco growth by integrating chloroplast phosphate utilization with photosynthesis and carbon-nitrogen metabolism.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient required for plant growth and productivity, and its uptake and distribution are mediated by members of the phosphate transporter (PHT) family. Among them, the transporter PHT2.1 has been implicated in chloroplast phosphate homeostasis; however, its role in coordinating plant growth and primary metabolism remains insufficiently defined. In this study, we cloned a phosphate transporter gene from Nicotiana tabacum L., designated NtPHT2;1. This gene is predominantly expressed in leaves, and its transcript level slightly decreases under low-phosphate con

Nanocellulose-induced defect engineering in carbon nitride enables two-electron oxygen reduction for H2O2 photosynthesis.

Herein, a nanocellulose-assisted molecular engineering strategy is developed to construct oxygen-doped and nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4 (OCN-x) photocatalysts. Nanocellulose serves as an oxygen-containing biomass-mediated structural regulator, promoting oxygen incorporation and nitrogen vacancy formation during thermal polymerization. The resulting defect-modulated structure promotes electron delocalization, carrier migration, and interfacial charge transfer. As a result, the optimized OCN-0.04 achieves a H2O2 production rate of 3.21 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible-light irradiation, comparing favorab

Multi-Subunit Engineering of Photorespiratory Glycine Decarboxylase Refines Photosynthesis, Growth and Metabolic Robustness of Arabidopsis.

Photorespiration secures oxygenic photosynthesis from metabolic constraints arising from the oxygenation reaction of Rubisco in today's oxygen-rich atmosphere. Beyond this protective function, it is vital for primary metabolism, cellular redox balance, and stomatal regulation. Importantly, photorespiration has emerged as a key target for improving CO2 assimilation and biomass production. Among proposed strategies, enhancing photorespiratory efficiency via upregulation of core enzymes has highlighted glycine decarboxylase (GDC) as a promising target, however, it remains unclear whether simultan

Twist engineering induced spin-orbit coupling for photosynthesis of ethane from carbon dioxide and water.

Harnessing sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce two-carbon products is promising but constrained by sluggish kinetics and high carbon-carbon coupling barriers. Here, we report Ni single-atom anchored twisted SnS2 (Ni-TSnS2) for ethane (C2H6) photosynthesis. In-situ electron paramagnetic resonance was developed to observe spin-orbit coupling in Ni-TSnS2. Spontaneous long-range spin-momentum locking originated from spin-orbit coupling enables magnetic-field-free long-range spin pinning. Topological protection inherent to long-range spin-momentum locking enhances its stability and ensur

Photosynthesis regulation impacts carbon and nitrogen assimilation in the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120.

Diazotrophic cyanobacteria fix both atmospheric carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) into biomass, but the two assimilation pathways are not compatible. Species like Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 physically separate C and N assimilation in different cell types. Even if separated, they are strongly intertwined, as N assimilation relies on the C skeletons and reducing power from photosynthesis, that in turn depends on N-rich molecules as pigments and proteins. Whereas the two pathways have been extensively studied individually, this work investigates their interaction by analysing photosynthetic properties upon

Dual-interface assembled silanized amide nanoclusters: driving light-carbon synergy to enhance photosynthesis in wheat.

The low efficiency of light energy utilization and CO2 fixation restricts C3 crop photosynthesis, presenting a significant challenge for sustainable agricultural development. To alleviate this limitation, we constructed bifunctional silanized amide nanoclusters (SiANs) via a dual-interface assembly strategy. Using wheat as a model crop, we demonstrated that SiANs can regulate the photosynthetic process through a light‑carbon synergy mechanism. Benefiting from the anisotropic assembly and covalent cross-linking, SiANs exhibit an ultra-high fluorescence quantum yield (91.53%) and a substantial C

Strong Interaction between Two-Unit-Cell Heterostructure Layers Realigns Defect Energy Level for Methanol Photosynthesis.

The photocatalytic conversions of CO2 and H2O offer a sustainable approach to provide methanol as a fuel and life-essential O2. However, the reaction efficiency is challenged by charge recombination and sluggish reaction kinetics. This work synthesizes single-unit-cell MoS2-x and organomanganese complex (MnBO) layers. The strong interaction between MoS2-x and MnBO gives rise to an atomic-layered heterostructure (MnBO/MoS2-x) with substantial electron transfer through the Mn-S bindings at the interface. This heterostructure achieves a methanol yield of 1.48 mmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of 99
