AIM: Rheumatic diseases have repercussions in hand function. The m-SACRAH (modified Score for the Assessment and quantification of Chronic Rheumatoid Affections of the Hands) questionnaire evaluates hand function according to the patient's opinion. Our aim was to look for the clinical and para-clinical variables that correlate with m-SACRAH in rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with diagnoses of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), gout, and systemic sclerosis (SS) with hand involvement and who agreed to participate, answered the m-SACRAH and Health Assessment Questi

PURPOSE: Palliative rehabilitation is defined as the process of helping individuals with a progressive, often advanced or incurable disease reach their physical, psychological, and social potential consistent with physiologic and environmental limitations and life preferences. However, the evidence on this topic is very heterogeneous in the medical scientific literature and studies diverge in their results depending on both the pathologies treated and the outcome measures studied as well as the types of interventions brought to the patients. Additionally, little is known about the role of the

This is a case of a 54-year-old woman managed as a case of osteogenesis imperfecta type 1 who sustained a left subtrochanteric fracture and eventual ankylosis of both hips after surgery and immobilisation. These injuries rendered her bedridden, maximally assisted in transitions and transfers, and unable to be positioned past 30° of backrest elevation. The patient underwent a bilateral Girdlestone procedure and had tailored progressive postoperative rehabilitation in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The patient also continued to receive bisphosphonates during her preoperative and pos

Patients with neuromuscular disease pose many anesthetic challenges and are at greater risk for perioperative complications, including respiratory or cardiovascular dysfunction and pulmonary aspiration. Therefore, these patients require special precautions, including interdisciplinary communication between primary care physicians, neurologists, physiatrists, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. Preoperative evaluation and optimization of comorbid conditions is critical. These patients may have adverse response to neuromuscular blocking drugs and the reversal drugs (e.g., neostigmine). They should

The reported prevalence rates of pain within the pelvis range from 3.8% to 24% in women aged 15 to 73 years. Despite the significant number of women affected, pelvic floor pain and dysfunction are commonly overlooked in women seeking medical care. Physiatrists are uniquely qualified to manage these patients because of their knowledge of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and their awareness of the relationships among pain, physiology, and function. When evaluating women who have pelvic pain, practitioners must ask questions about history of urinary or fecal incontinence, dyspareunia, or p

There is limited literature concerning use of wheelchairs by patients with combined visual impairment and neuromuscular diseases. This case report describes the use of a motorized wheelchair and guide dog by a legally blind patient with severe visual loss due to oculocutaneous albinism. He had concomitant decreased functional mobility from degenerative joint disease of both knees, which limited his ambulation capability. After careful consideration of risks and a successful trial of its use in the corridors of our institution, as well as successfully traveling with it outdoors, he was given a

OBJECTIVE: After a total knee arthroplasty, physical assessments of quadriceps strength and gait speed performance are often undertaken during rehabilitation. Our study aimed to improve their clinical interpretability by examining trajectory curves across levels of self-reported walking and stair climbing function.
DESIGN: A sample of 2624 patients with primary total knee arthroplasty participated in this retrospective longitudinal study. Monthly, for 4 mos after surgery, quadriceps strength and gait speed were quantified. At the month-6 time point, self-reported walking and stair climbing fu

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to evaluate the influence of level of spinal cord injury (SCI) on caloric intake relative to total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and body composition, and to develop a SCI-specific correction factor for the TDEE estimation.
DESIGN: Individuals with paraplegia (PARA, n = 28) and tetraplegia (TETRA, n = 13) were analyzed. Daily caloric intake, basal metabolic rate, and TDEE were obtained using dietary recall, indirect calorimetry, and prediction equations, respectively. Caloric intake and TDEE were adjusted to bodyweight. Body composition was assessed usi

BACKGROUND: Head and neck lymphedema (HNL) is a common sequela of head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. While external HNL has been increasingly studied, research addressing internal laryngopharyngeal HNL remains limited. This review synthesizes literature on non-invasive interventions targeting internal HNL.
METHODS: A scoping review of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus through January 2026 was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
RESULTS: Of 768 records retrieved, nine studies published between 2020 and 2025 met criteria, reflecting 619 patients. This comprised three randomized clin

Neuralgic amyotrophy is a multifocal, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of peripheral nerves and/or portions of the brachial plexus, typically presenting as regional pain followed by weakness. Awareness and recognition of this entity in the cancer population is important and relevant to physiatrists, given the frequency of immune system activation in this population, whether mediated by cancer, its treatments, or infections associated with an immunocompromised status. We present a case of neuralgic amyotrophy presenting primarily as bilateral anterior interosseous mononeuropathies of onset

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer-related lymphedema (CRL) places an already vulnerable patient population at risk for the development and worsening of psychological distress. The purpose of this review is to highlight factors contributing to distress in lymphedema secondary to breast, head and neck, genitourinary cancers, and melanoma and discuss pertinent treatment considerations.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple factors contribute to distress in CRL, including changes in body image, sleep, sexuality, functional capacity, and social interaction. There is limited literature describing psychopharmacological

Opportunities for early medical student exposure to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) are desirable for promoting the field as a career choice and are useful for introducing students to the care of people with disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted medical education and caused the cancellation of many in-person clinical programs, including the Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship in PM&R supported by the Association of Academic Physiatrists. This article describes the process by which an in-person summer clinical externship program was effectively converted

Central neuropathic pain can be difficult to treat and, subsequently, cause a great amount of disability and distress to patients, which limits quality of life. Common etiologies include the following: stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, infection, vasculitis, and malignancy. This case is a description of an 18-yr-old male patient diagnosed with a grade IV diffuse glioma who experienced severe neuropathic pain refractory to first-line treatment options including the following: gabapentinoids, tricyclic antidepressants, and selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptor encephalitis is a serious, complex, and potentially fatal disease in children. Children with this condition frequently present with altered mental status, rapid functional deterioration, and seizures. Despite aggressive treatment with immune therapy such as corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobin, and plasmapheresis, children often need extensive rehabilitative services and can be left with lasting deficits. In this case series, we report on six known consecutive pediatric cases of N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor antibody encephalitis in Northern Calif

Craniomandibular disorders often mimic diseases related to the ear, nose, and throat, so patients often seek the care of an otolaryngologist for these problems. After ruling out otolaryngologic disease, craniomandibular disorders should be considered in the differential diagnosis. If a clinical diagnosis is supported by history, symptoms, and clinical evidence, the patient should be referred in a timely manner to a dentist who is competent to manage the patient. In addition to dentists, other health care practitioners may be called on by the primary treating physician to aid in the diagnosis a
